Introducing Butch Davis

North Carolina has scheduled a 3 PM press conference today to formally introduce Butch Davis as head football coach for the Tar Heels. Of course this all comes with the backdrop of NC State starting the same process UNC undertook in late October. The Davis hire, if anything, raises the ante for NC State in their search for a new coach. Settling for alums or even assistants at more prominent programs may not cut it anymore. As for Davis, the debate that most often comes to the surface is how long he intends to stay at UNC and whether or not UNC can hold onto him with offers for other jobs floating around. At present that debate has been put aside because the coming of Butch Davis stirs up excitement in and around the program. UNC football has a credible winner and recognizable name as it’s head coach. The program now moves forward with renewed expectations as well as the idea that they can be a player in ACC or even the national scene. No one knows what will happen down the road but right now UNC football has the coach it needs to be a difference maker again.

And despite my own objections to the hire, it is difficult not to get excited about seeing this:

The Upside of Firing Bunting Early

When UNC fired John Bunting after the Virginia game it was debated as to whether that was wise or not. There was some conjecture that it led to an embarassing period with a coaching search being conducted while the fired coach was still on the sideline. Then the search wrapped up within three weeks and UNC got their man in the form of Butch Davis which validated the decision. Even beyond that if you look at this list of BCS schools who have all fired coaches this season, most of them in the past few days, then decision to fire Bunting in October looks like sheer genius.

Arizona State
Iowa State
North Carolina

Miami
NC State
Alabama
Michigan State

When you look at UNC on the same list with these other schools, you can easily see that UNC would have a great deal of trouble attracting a top name like Butch Davis with these other programs conducting searches at the same time. At present UNC would be, at best, third on this list behind Miami and Alabama which are considered to be “destination” jobs. If you also consider they would be competeting directly with NC State for candidates it would have undoubtedly been a huge mess before it was done. Since UNC went ahead a pulled the trigger early they were virtually alone looking for a coach which gave them a distinct advantage when it came to negotiating with anyone they wanted. And while Michigan State entered the fray a week later, they had a different track they were following with the search so it do not directly compete with UNC. Two ACC schools along with an SEC program would have been thorns in UNC’s side as they moved forward with their search. As it turns out the early move by UNC left them free of any such hinderances in conducting their search.

So in the end, UNC comes out smelling like roses spending this first Monday after the regular season announcing a new coaching hire while many other schools are announcing dismissals.

ACC Basketball Update(11/27)

Basketball ready to take center stage in the ACC…

Saturday

  • Miami won again beating Lafeyette 98-66.  Frank Haith obviously got the “message” Paul Dee was sending when he fired Larry Coker
  • Boston College got back to winning by finding someone in New England they could beat taking out Rhode Island 86-68.
  • Wake Forest keeps winning over the cupcakes.  The problem is they are not winning by much.  Wake beats App State 88-78.
  • Duke smacked Davidson around 75-47.

Sunday

  • So what’s the deal with Virginia Tech?  Everyone was so high on them in the preseason but twice in four days they have been the victim of a mid-major team losing to Southern Illinois 69-64.  It will be interesting to see how they do in actual ACC play.
  • Maryland-Eastern Shore is one of those teams that screams: “Hey, Big Time U, schedule us so you can beat us half to death!”  Virginia obliged by a score of 104-63.
  • Tonight: The ACC/Big Ten Challenge kicks off with NC State hosting Michigan.

Sources: NC State Fires Chuck Amato [UPDATED:10:00 PM]

They always say famous deaths happen in threes. Apparently that is true of firing coaches in the ACC. According to Andrew Jones at the Wilmington Star and 850 the Buzz, NC State is set to announce via press release that Chuck Amato will not be retained as head coach of the Wolfpack following the 21-16 loss to ECU on Saturday which was the seventh straight for the Pack this season.

ACC Football Week #13: Review

Miami 17 Boston College 14

Miami plays some tough defense for a change and beats BC to get to 6-6. It was not enough to save Larry Coker who did nothing but go 59-15 in six years.

Florida 21 Florida State 14

Pretty much a lackluster peformance from the Gators who needed style points to make a case for #2 in the BCS. Mercifully for FSU fans Jeff Bowden is done save the bowl game.

UNC 45 Duke 44

John Bunting goes out with wins over the rival schools but not without doing what he has really done best for six years: Make bad play calls.

South Carolina 31 Clemson 28

Remember when Clemson beat Georgia Tech 30-7? Yeah that Clemson does not exist anymore. Tigers lose to the Gamecocks for the first time in four years. I personally think Tommy Bowden will see some heat if things go south next season.

Virginia Tech 17 Virginia 0

Dear Kirk Herbstreit,

Yeah, we agree with the guys down at FSU, James Sewell is not that good.

Signed,

Virginia Tech Defense

Georgia 15 Georgia Tech 12

You know that “Reggie Ball Moment” everyone has been talking about all season? Well it happened today, in fact it happened three times. Hopefully for GT’s sake he got it all out of his system before heading to Jacksonville

East Carolina 21 NC State 16

Chuck Amato is done. End of discussion. Longest football losing streak for the Wolfpack since 1959.

Wake Forest 38 Maryland 24

The interesting thing about the blocked PAT UNC had against Duke was that it reminded us all of the blocked FG Wake Forest had to beat the Blue Devils 14-13 in the second week of the season. At that point we all assumed that this was classic Wake Forest since squeaking out a win over a team that lost to I-AA Richmond the week before is not an indicative of a team that ends up being the first one in the history of the ACC to finish 6-0 on the road. Wake Forest wins the Atlantic Division and will play Georgia Tech next week in Jacksonville for the ACC Championship.

Wake Freakin’ Forest.

Duke 0-12, UNC and NC State 3-9, Wake Forest 10-2 and divisional champion.

One more note. The ACC was 0-4 in out-of-conference games on Saturday including an 0-3 mark against the SEC. Woo-hoo…way to represent guys.

This Week: 5-3
Season: 70-25

UNC 45 Duke 44

Let me set the scene for you.

You are ahead by a touchdown with less than three minutes left in the game and facing a 3rd and eight on your own 25 yard line. The opposing team just spent their last timeout so you have two options.

1. Run the ball hoping you can break off a nice gain for the first down or at the very least run a good 35-40 seconds off before you have to punt the ball

or

2. Pass the ball which carries the risk of an incomplete pass stopping the clock or worse yet an interception which will give your opponent the ball in the red zone and if things really are not going your way maybe they will run it in for a touchdown.

I am here to tell you that smart coaches and ones that win games go for the first option and if they do not get the first down they punt and play defense. Especially if your quarterback is prone to throw interceptions. Unfortunately, John Bunting does not fall into this group of coaches and he decided to have Joe Dailey pass the ball only he did so to a Duke player who returned it for a touchdown. In fact I saw a replay during halftime of the GT-GA game and it was one of the worst INTs I have ever seen thrown given the context of the game in that moment. It was awful and for all of the good will Bunting had built up in the last few games, in the end he reaffirmed why most of us wanted him fired, and that is because he is incapable of handling game management. And when it happened I was ready to fire Bunting again, it that were possible.

But fortunately for UNC, the one thing Duke is utterly incapable of doing when the game is on the line without having it blocked is kicking the ball through the uprights. So with a chance to tie the game Duke had it blocked the same way the game winning FG was blocked against Wake Forest in the second week of the season. A very tiny part of me almost feels bad for Duke but since I am a Tar Heel Fan I am incapable of feeling anything along the lines of empathy, pity, or generally warm vibes for Duke unless of course someone dies.

So that is it. The season ends with two wins over our chief rivals and UNC finishes this disaster of a season 3-9. Tar Heel Fan wishes John Bunting all the best as he moves on from Chapel Hill. Bunting did a lot of good while heading the program in areas that are often dismissed such as team discipline as well as his general passion for all things Carolina blue. We all wish that could have been coupled with success on the field and some wins on the record. As that 3rd down play proved today it was not meant to be and that is really too bad.

And finally, in honor of Duke’s “defeated” season I present this visual representation of their win total this year:

ACC Basketball Update(11/25)

Turkey anyone…

  • I am sure there is some kind of irony to Virginia Tech, whose mascot is the Hokie which I think is some sort of turkey, losing on Thanksgiving night to Western Michigan 71-68. Good thing the gobblers bounced back to beat Montana 77-56. Nothing like early season losses to really confuse everyone.
  • Maryland continues to roll beating High Point 81-63 on the eve of the Atlantic Divisional Championship game in College Park.
  • UNC beat Tennessee 101-87 by beating them senseless in the first half and playing so-so in the second, much to Roy Williams’ chagrin.
  • Florida State was absolutely throttled by #4 Pitt 88-66. I am not real sure what to make of that one except FSU might need a win or two like that to make sure they do not get skipped for the Big Dance.
  • Clemson is now 6-0 after beating Charleston Southern 74-50. Clemson still has not played anyone.
  • NC State trailed Gardner Webb by three at halftime but pulled ahead and away in the second half to win 88-76 which means if you extrapolate UNC’s 53 point win over the same team, UNC will beat the Wolfpack by 39 points.(Edit: My math sucks, should be 41)
  • On Saturday: Miami and Boston College will both try to break two game losing skids, Wake Forest hosts Appalachian State and Duke returns to the friendly confines to face Davidson.

UNC at Duke

Where: Wallace Wade Stadium, Durham, NC
When: November 25th, 12:00 PM
TV: None
Records: UNC 2-9, 1-6 ACC Duke 0-11, 0-7 ACC

Two dangers for UNC in this game.

1. Duke does not want to end up 0-12 so they will be playing some inspired football.

2. UNC is coming off a big win with a lot of emotion surrounding John Bunting so this is the classic definition of a trap game.

Still UNC has played so much better since Bunting was fired and the players are adamant about sending Bunting out on a high note.  As I said before, a season this bad should at least include wins over NC State and Duke.  One was taken care of last week and this one will send Duke out with a defeated season.  It would be a nice ending for Bunting, right before Butch Davis addresses the media on Monday.

UNC 24 Duke 10

UNC 101 Tennessee 87

THF’s Take

So at least we can talk some of the Tar Heel fans down off the ledge now.

UNC dominated the first half to get a 21 point lead and in the second half did not play at the same level to end up with the 13 point win. Tyler Hansbrough had the big game everyone assumed he would have to erase memories of that horrible night against Gonzaga. Hansbrough dropped 27 points and nine rebounds. Brandan Wright had a strong game with 19 points and eight rebounds on 9 of 10 shooting. Reyshawn Terry showed up with 10 points and eight boards but also committed five turnovers. Ty Lawson probably had his finest game to this point with 14 points and six assists. Lawson still is struggling with turnovers committing four but he also logged 24 minutes at the point which may be his highest total to date.

Despite the win, the two huge bugaboos UNC has dealt with in almost every game is perimeter defense and 40 minutes of focus/intensity. It was obvious Roy Williams was not happy with the effort in the second half. This team has a tendency to get totally off track in terms of their focus and allowed a Tennessee team which they had knocked down for what amounts to a TKO to get up off the mat. Now, the Vols never really threatened UNC but it all had the feel of a boxing match where the guy keeps hanging around and punching away even though he is bloodied. I can imagine Roy pointing out to them that Tennessee was down by 15-20 points but kept going after it despite the score. UNC seemed satisfied after getting up by 20 and as the season goes on it is imperative that this team applies the full balance of their talent to the last minute of the game. This is obviously not happening and it leads to some really sloppy play to the tune of 24 turnovers. Tennessee only committed 11. The other part of the equation is the perimeter defense which was once again non-existent. The Vols shot almost 50% from the arc hitting 15 of 31 for the game and 11 for 21 in the second half alone. Obviously this ties into the lack of effort and intensity that UNC held Tennessee to a respectable 4 for 10 in the first half then allowed them to go hog wild from three point range in the second half.

So in short it was good to get the win but at the same time there are nagging issues and the fact UNC has yet to put together a full game against someone worth their weight in basketball talent is disturbing. Wednesday night against the presumptive #2 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes would be a good place to find out if such an effort is possible.

Misc Notes

  • The flagrant foul on JuJuan Smith against Tyler Hansbrough did not warrant an ejection in my opinion. Smith clearly took a swipe at the ball but after he missed it he grabbed Hansbrough’s jersey and pull him down rather violently. The refs made an immediate flagrant foul call and even stepped in front of Hansbrough to keep him from retaliating. Of course Roy Williams was also on the floor to keep Hansbrough out of trouble as well.
  • ESPN’s Doug Gottlieb asked the rather stupid question as to when Roy Williams would par his rotation down to nine players to which I would say: “Doug, Roy is one of the best coaches in the country, so I imagine he will do it when he feels like it.” Seriously I think the answer to that question is January. I expect we will see musical player changes for the next month or so since after the next two opponents UNC does not meet anyone to worry about until January. The start of ACC play should also bring a consistent rotation from the coaching staff.
  • Ty Lawson showed some of the moves which make him one potentially one of the best PGs in the conference. His turnovers are still a huge concern but he is able to make some incredible plays.
  • Lawson and Deon Thompson obviously ditched the headbands. Seems to have worked for Lawson.

Larry Coker is a Leftover Too Now

In a surprise to no one Miami fired Larry Coker this morning even though the Canes beat Boston College last night and got to 6-6 for the season.  For Coker the season steadily went from bad(suspending Ryan Moore prior to the FSU game) to worse(the loss at Louisville after his team stomped on the Cardinals logo) to something out of a Stephen King novel(the brawl with FIU) to something you would never wish upon your worst rival(shooting death of a player) Of course some may be surprised with how quick Miami AD Paul Dee struck by dissmissing Coker today less than 12 hours after one of the finest defensive efforts of the season against BC.
