UNC 69 St. Louis 48

If the current string of games are meant to be build blocks for the meat of the season then this one was a perfect one for the Heels to play and win.  UNC struggled shooting the ball in the first half shooting 29% only leading by one at the break before coming back in the second stanza and imposing their will on a tiring Billiken team.  Tyler Hansbrough had the kind of game he wanted to have in his homecoming with 15 points and 13 rebounds.  Brandan Wright has yet to play a game as a Tar Heel and not score in double figures.  However the most impressive line of the night has to belong to Ty Lawson who went for 12 points, eight assists and eight rebounds despite being 5-11.  Fourteen points from Danny Green further highlights the Tar Heel depth where players which may not garner the focus on the defense can step up and scorch the opposition.

The impressive part of this win is this kind of game is very much like what UNC will see when they visit Clemson or Virginia Tech to take on teams which they obviously out class on paper but play tough on their home court.  Games of this nature can take a nasty turn if UNC gets rattled by the first half of play and does not make the necessary adjustments to exploit the obvious talent advantages.  The Heels did that tonight turning a one point first half struggle into a 21 point win.  UNC faced a lot of different pressures in this game from Hansbrough wanting to make a good showing to the general lack of focus that comes from playing a game right before the holidays.  Also add in that this was the first college game for guys like Lawson, Wright, and Wayne Ellington.  UNC remained focused on the task at hand and the environment did not seem to be an issue.

So, at 10-1 UNC goes on a little break until next Thursday when they welcome Rutgers and show the Scarlet Knights that it’s not football season anymore.

Road trip to Tyler’s house!

This is the second half of a home and home with the Billikens.  It has been a UNC tradition to play a game near the home of every player on the team at some point in their tenure.  This also is the first true road game for the Heels since the four games in the NIT were all neutral court affairs.  In one respect it will be a test for the freshmen who have not played in a hostile environment although accordin the Jones Angell this morning on 620 AM about 1/3 of Poplar Bluff have tickets.  This is also a game of contrasting styles and Tyler Hansbrough who is intently focused on impressing the hometown folks will be facing the type of center who has given him trouble in the past.  Ian Vouyoukas is 6-10 and averaging 1.9 blocks per game.  The real test here will be how well Hansbrough handles this type of defense.  The Billikens will also look to play a more deliberate pace, probably because they do not go much beyond six people with the seventh abd eighth guys on the depth chart logging about 10 minutes a game.  UNC will look to take advantage of their depth and push a tempo to wear the home team down.  I expect somewhat of a struggle early with UNC asserting itself and it’s superior talent as the game wears on.

ACC Basketball Update(12/21)

The ACC was 0 for Wednesday.

  • NC State lost to #10 Alabama 82-75 despite being down as many as 23 points with eight minutes to go in the second half. Brandon Costner had 25 and the Pack had the services of transfer Trevor Ferguson who made a nice debut with five assists in 23 minutes.
  • What the heck is wrong with Virginia? Last night they fell off the top bunk against Applachian State and tonight they got throttled by Utah 94-70. Sean Singletary has been MIA shooting 6 for 23 from the floor which includes an abysmal 1 for 8 from three point range. It also does not help that Utah actually improved upon App. State’s 54% shooting from last night to blister the Cavs at a 62% clip.
  • And Miami concluded the ACC shutout this evening with a 79-74 loss to Binghamton in Coral Cables. What is more disturbing is Miami could very well lose the next three games beat Wake Forest and head to Maryland 8-8 overall and 2-0 in the ACC.

What Butch Davis Really Said

The News and Observer had a Q&A with Tom O’Brien and Butch Davis. Here is THF’s rough translation of what Davis really said in answering the N&O’s questions.

ACC Basketball Update(12/19)

So much basketbal played, so little time. Here is a quick glance at what the ACC schools have been doing over the past four days:

North Carolina: 12/16-W vs. UNC-A 93-62, 12/19-W vs. FAU 105-52

More nice sweet cupcakes for the Heels as they basically work out the kinks ahead of the ACC schedule. The three freshman Brandan Wright, Wayne Ellington, and Ty Lawson have officially arrived which is a huge help to Tyler Hansbrough who is the focus of opposing defenses.

Boston College: 12/17-W vs. Sacred Heart, 101-68

Whatever bug BC had when they lost to Vermont and Providence seems to have gone and they are playing extremely well right now.

Virginia: 12/16-W vs Hampton 91-69, L vs. Applachian St. 80-69

Here’s the thing. I would think that App State would beat UVa in football. Basketball should be a different story…but it wasn’t….in a bad way. App St. shot lights out and UVa did not.

Virginia Tech: 12/17-W vs. Wake Forest 63-60

The Hokies opened up the ACC season with a win over hapless Wake Forest winning by three which proves once more how important it was for VT to hold serve at home. Even the worst teams in the ACC can give you fits.

Miami: 12/16-W vs. Stetson 89-64

Miami got an easy one amid exams by beating Stetson by 25. There are some tougher matchups looming in the next few weeks.

Clemson: 12/19-W vs. Georgia Southern 72-60

Clemson remains undefeated at 11-0 and hold onto to that #22 ranking which will undoubtedly be going away once they play a handful of ACC opponents.

Duke: 12/19-W vs. Kent State, 79-72

I am not sure what defense ESPN could offer against the accusation that they are pro-Duke. If Duke were playing good teams it would be understandable for them to be shown as much as they are but this is the third game in a row in which Duke played a lower tier opponent and had the game shown on ESPN. Of course Duke somehow scored 79 points against Kent State and if you need any further evidence that Duke is overrated look no further than ESPN’s Jay Bilas who along with Andy Katz excludes them from their Power 16 rankings.

Florida State: 12/18-W vs High Point, 81-64

FSU, like UNC, is in a stretch of games against easier opponents which serve as building blocks. FSU struggled in the first half against a High Point team which UNC dominated.

NC State: 12/16-W vs Mt. St Mary’s 80-65

NC State played another game with only six players but shot the ball well and had MSM commit twice the number of fouls. The top ten ranked Crimson Tide of Alabama come to Raleigh on Wednesday give the Pack an incredible test.

Georgia Tech: 12/18-W vs. Centenary 92-52

The Yellow Jackets finally got the ship right ahead of a rivalry game with Georgia. There is an obvious need for GT to gel a young team together and handle those games they should win.

Wake Forest: 12/17-L vs Virginia Tech 63-60, W vs. Gardner Webb 92-60

Wake Forest acquitted themselves quite well at Blacksburg and then trashed everyone’s favorite whipping boy Gardner Webb. The odds are they are still the worst team in the ACC but they may also be a thorn for someone on occasion.

Maryland: Did Not Play

The Terps took a 10 day break for exams.

UNC 105 Florida Atlantic 52

Now you know why Matt Doherty thought SMU would be a better job.

UNC was up an astounding 65-18 at halftime and with 11 minutes to go in the second half UNC was leading 90-28.  At that point I can assume Roy decided not to run the score up on his former player, FAU coach Rex Walters.  Now, bear in mind this is an FAU team which is quite frankly a horrible team so take the Tar Heel performance for what it is worth.  That being said, if you were wondering what happened if these talented Tar Heels were firing on all cylinders, tonight was an example.  Tyler Hansbrough had 20 points, Brandan Wright had 15 points and 8 rebounds, and Ty Lawson had 11 points, 8 assists, and four steals.  UNC also played an extremely balanced rotation which included only three Heels playing more than 20 minutes.  UNC shot 66% from the field and may have broken a school record with a 47 point halftime lead.  It was utter and complete domination which does not mean as much as it would had they actually played a good team.  I think this game is a great indicator this team is working themselves up to that level we all expected them to be at when the season began.

Florida Atlantic at UNC

Where: Dean Smith Center, Chapel Hill, NC
When: December 19th, 7:00 PM
TV: ESPN Hates U
Records: UNC-CH 8-1, FAU 4-5

If you are looking for a storyline to this game, ACC Now has it:

UNC added Florida Atlantic to the basketball schedule after Matt Doherty left FAU for SMU.

Doherty’s replacement, Rex Walters, offers Roy Williams a chance to coach against one of his favorite former players.

Yeah, that is about all we will find interesting about this one. FAU is 4-5 overall but lost to UKMC by 15. UKMC went to College Park and got thrashed by Maryland by 51 points. So, in short this is going to be nothing more than one of those “building block” games as Eric Montross has called them on the Tar Heel Radio Network. Of course the radio is the only place you will likely have any contact with the game because this one and the next one against St. Louis are on ESPNU. They must have figured since no one would really be watching anyway why not stick it on a channel no one really gets. I am sure it makes perfect sense in Bristol.

Impressions from Inside the Smith Center

As I mentioned, I was in attendance at the UNC-Asheville game which marked the first time in 15 years I had seen the Heels live. Here are some observations:

  1. Brandan Wright is absolutely the real deal.  Yes it was UNC-A but everything about the way he plays is intuitive.  He has an incredible touch from about eight feet in and his moves are exceptionally smooth.
  2. Tyler Hansbrough had a quiet 15 points but the two things that struck me were (A) his ability to take contact and still hit shots.  In fact I am convinced because he gets shots off the refs do not call fouls on opposing players as much as they would if he simply lost the ball and (B) he can handle the ball and dribble the ball extremely well to the point he is not limited to stop and find a ball handler on a break, he can bring it up himself and then pass when needed.
  3. Ty Lawson is scary fast which I already knew but watching it live is highly recommended. Lawson also has great court vision making passes I would not think were there.  He is also learning when to push the issue and not which also leads to silly turnovers.
  4. UNC is young and while I am sure this has happened before this season for some reason it struck me more starkly when I looked down to see four freshman and a sophomore on the floor at the same time.
  5. Speaking of which, UNC has three freshman in the starting lineup and are they ever good.
  6. Roy Williams nearly got a standing ovation when he came out during pre-game warmups. It must be nice to have that kind of love coming from the fan base.
  7. Speaking of Williams, it was fun to be able to watch him.  He is animated and intense as well as in a constant teaching mode with the players who come out of the game.
  8. Those four national title banners(five if you count the Helms Foundation title which is somewhat debatable) look really nice in the rafters.  In fact the Smith Center is one of only four arenas in the nation that has at least four NCAA Championship banners hanging up.  Only UCLA, Kentucky, and Indiana have more.
  9. On the other end are the retired and honored jersies which was interesting because in the long, illustrious history of UNC basketball only seven are retired.  That says something about those seven given the players UNC has had in it’s history.
  10. The Smith Center is 20 years old this year and that does show.  When it was built it was quite the arena but now lacking amenities like luxury boxes or a nice large scoreboard over the court it shows it’s age.  The four screens in the corners is a nice addition.

UNC-CH 92 UNC-A 63

I will have more later on some of my impressions of the Heels after seeing them live.  This game was everything we expected with UNC going on a 22-1 early in the first half after being down 7-5.  The freshman trio of Wright, Lawson, and Ellington continues to chip in major offensive production and also sounds like a law firm.  Tyler Hansbrough had a quiet 15 points as UNC-A was content to keep the ball away from him by fronting him on defense.  Of course the defense got high marks in this game and rightfully so, they played well forcing consecutive shot clock violations in the first half and generally playing with a lot of intensity.  Eric Montross said on the Tar Heel Radio Network after the game that this was a building block game looking forward to the rest of the season.  I would agree and I think there were a lot of postives.

The one interesting not from the Bulldogs’ side of the game was the play of 7-6 Kenny George.  I don’t know the whole story about him but it was obvious he struggles with his size.  He was extremely slow to the point Hansbrough drove the baseline, sidestepped him, and dunked the ball while George did not even move.  He was unable to run up and down the court more than about 2-3 times before he had to sit down.  In some ways I felt sorry for him and it goes to prove that sheer height and size do not necessarily translate to basketball and I wonder how much he is being pressured into playing basketball since it is obviously physically trying to do so.  It also a huge red flag when you are playing an opposing player at the Smith Center and the crowd cheers when you get the ball wanting you to shooting.  That sort of thing means you are more of a novelty than an opposing player people respect.

UNC-Asheville at UNC-Chapel Hill

Where: Dean Smith Center, Chapel Hill, NC
When: December 16th, 2:00 PM
TV: Fox Sports Net
Records: UNC-CH 7-1, UNC-A 4-5

Here is a dirty little secret from Tar Heel Fan. It has been 15 years since I have been to an actual regular season game UNC was playing in and 13 years since attending any kind of game at the Dean Smith Center. Yeah, you’d think a guy who blog this much about UNC basketball would actually be going to more games. That however will change today when I will be at the game against UNC Asheville. Of course this is going to be a pure slaughter but it will be fun to see the Heels in action live, especially to get a better feel for how guys like Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, and Brandan Wright play up close. So I will blog my observations upon my return from the Smith Center.
