Basically it went like this. Wake Forest hung in there relatively close for most of the game until the relentless storm which is the Tar Heel depth and talent turned the game into a laugher. UNC still has turnover problems which seem to derive themselves from the penchant of this young crew to make the ill advised pass. Wake Forest also did a great job of controlling the offensive glass which is one of the main reasons they were able to stay close for so long. Other than those two negatives, the offense was balanced which the perimeter game working alongside the usual suspects on the interior. Defensively, Wake turned the ball over 18 times and shot 32% from the floor. So for all intents and purposes it was a good warm up for the road trip to Tuscon.

The biggest story that anyone can possibly muster for this game is that Reyshawn Terry will be playing in his hometown for the last time. Terry, who came out of Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, got his big chance to shine last season when he was one of the few scholarship players left after the top seven players left for graduation or the NBA. Terry made the most of it averaging 14 points per game and being a key component in the team that went a surprising 23-8. This season has been less stellar mainly because of the influx of the freshmen and the further development of players like Danny Green and Marcis Ginyard. At times, such as Saturday night against Georgia Tech, Terry has been very good, but for the most part he has been invisible contributing rebounds and good defense while averaging eight points per game. It has been said he is under pressure, mainly from himself, to perform well on the offensive end since he would very much like to support his family by snagging an NBA contract. Unfortunately for that ambition, the circumstances on the present team tend to limit his offensive production. That being said, if Terry is able to step up his game it only makes UNC more dangerous. Adding a slashing small forward who can also hit perimeter shots as a consistent part of the offense would make UNC a difficult team to handle. As though worrying about the two headed monster in the paint wasn’t enough, having a player like Terry out there providing significant offensive production would be a huge headache for opposing teams.
As for Wake Forest there is not much to say. This game can be likened to the seven game stretch prior to the conference opener. It should serve as a learning experience and a great place to continue to work out the kinks. It is also a fairly easy game prior to what is sure to be a tough matchup at Arizona on Saturday before returning to Chapel Hill to run Miami through the gaunlet. For UNC this should be a great opportunity to put together a complete game which includes good defense, efficient offense, and few turnovers. If that happens, this is not going to be pretty for the Demon Deacons.

850 the Buzz brings us a new Coke commercial from none other than Roy Williams who decided it was time to go out and snag some of that sweet, sweet endorsement money Coach K has been raking in for years now.
Obviously this will draw comparisions to Coach K’s commerical ventures as well as the debate over whether this gives him a recruiting advantage. I am convinced that these kids make the decision to attend a Duke or UNC based on the history and a little thing called winning not because they saw Coach K driving a Chevy or Roy Williams drinking a Coke. Of course Joe Ovies had the best take on it:
However, could this be a recruiting disadvantage? What if that five-star senior is a strict Pepsi kid. Or worse, mom doesn’t let the kid drink soda!
I am sure Coach K has similar problems when trying to recruit a kid whose parents are die hard Ford driving MasterCard users.

Analysis
- During the past three conference games UNC has had one game where they played poor defense, shot poorly, and turned the ball over frequently. That was against Virginia Tech and they lost fairly handily. In the two games since, they played killer defense, shot the ball well, but still turned the ball over way too many times and those games they won by 22 and 16 points. So, the real question is how bad will they beat someone if they do A and B correctly and figure C out?
- Could someone please figure Maryland out for me? They are 1-4 in the ACC which means they need to be 8-3 the rest of the way to be 9-7 in the conference. It may be doable with the road games at Duke and Clemson plus the home game with UNC being the three losses. Beyond that they get Georgia Tech, Virginia, FSU, and NC State at home, all games they have to win. On the road they visit Wake Forest, NC State, and Florida State. That FSU series will be the key one to watch as well as the home games against UVa and Georgia Tech. That Miami loss is looming very large right now.
- NC State was flat out horrid against Duke on Saturday which had less to do with the Duke defense and more to do with the Wolfpack basically losing all control of their bodies and the basketball.
- Clemson blew BC out rebounding nicely from their two game losing streak. I am not sure BC would have won this game anyway but I imagine it would have been closer had Sean Williams not been sent home for failing to follow the J.J. Redick example of being in the room without actually smoking the pot.
- Speaking of rebounding, Virginia Tech did so by knocking off the aforementioned Terps at home. VT is doing what it needs to do and defend their home floor having already stolen one on the road.
- So the standings at this point shed some light on the world: BC is still on top at 5-1 but we all now that is not going to last. UNC and VT are a half game back with Clemson, Duke, and Virginia jammed up in the middle with two losses followed by the enimatic FSU and GT at three losses. Miami is 2-4 and likely to drop fast. And at the bottom we have NC State and Wake Forest(no surprise) along with highly disappointing Maryland.
- This week: Boston College will try to keep above water hosting FSU who needs a win. VT will try to notch a second road win at Miami. UNC is set to thrash Wake Forest
with the possibility of Michael Jordan in the house[that would actually be the game on Feb 10th not this one], Maryland tries to right the ship against Georgia Tech who needs some ship righting of their own. Virginia head to NC State for key road game and the big game of the week is Clemson at Duke where someone is going to get exposed.
I had a commenter register his opinion on one of my posts concerning the all time wins record which Bob Knight passed earlier this month. Usually I respond with the comments section, if at all, unless they offer up something exceptionally insightful or relatively asinine. Unfortunately for this guy, his was the latter and I felt it neccesitated a public response. Here is the comment:
I understand you like Dean better than Bobby, but as for pure coaching, Dean under-achieved as a coach in comparison. Dean had far better talent than Bobby. Bobby won championships with only one true star (Thomas in 81). Dean’s 2 championships were both won on flukes. G’town with freddy brown throwing the ball to wrong player and Webb calling timeout with none left. two of the biggest blunders in NCAA history. Dean was GIVEN 2 championships, he could have none with all those HOF players. Give Dean Bobby’s talent and he has 0 championships. Give Bobby Dean’s talent and he may have 10 championships. There is no comparison in who is the better coach. Bobby over Dean all day.
Now, I think the talent argument is debatable. To say Knight only had one true star is selling the talent at IU short during the Knight years when you consider he also had guys like Quinn Buckner and Scott May who played on the undefeated 1976 team plus others who were considered great college basketball players. According to the IU media guide, there were 16 different players named All American during the 27 years Knight was the head coach there. During the 36 years of Dean Smith he had 24 All Americans who were named on any AP All American team. So, while Dean Smith did have more talent in house, it was not by much and certainly not enough to give Smith a discernible advanatage of Knight. I think stating that Knight would have won 10 titles with Smith’s teams and Smith would have zero with Knight’s is quite frankly overly simplistic. And the reason I now that is that Coach K is perhaps an example of Knight’s coaching with Smith’s talent and his titles record is only one better than Smith with one less Final Four on his resume.
However, the part of the argument which really raised my ire was the assertion that Dean Smith’s national titles were both flukes and therefore not actually earned on the court. Obviously the commenter does not know that UNC fans have been hearing this stuff for years and it usually comes from Wolfpack fans. And since he is operating on such a level of ignorance let’s review what transpired in those two games.
1982 NCAA Champioship
UNC trailed by one at halftime but shot 11 for 18 from the floor in the second stanza and after Michael Jordan hit the go ahead jumper with 17 seconds left it was 63-62. Georgetown’s Freddy Brown brought the ball frontcourt with John Thompson opting not to call a timeout with the clock waning. Brown picks up his dribble above the key and it is obvious he is panicked as to what he should do next. Jordan actually steps up in the lane and cuts off an passing lane to the paint at which point James Worthy reacts to a fake pass from Brown and flashes out running almost to midcourt. Brown sees this out of the corner of his eye and then passes the ball right to Worthy who attempts run the clock out but is fouled with two seconds left.
It is important to remember one thing: UNC was leading when all of this transpired. Jordan hit the clutch shot and all UNC had to do was play about 10 more seconds of lockdown defense and they walk out of there national champions. I would argue that they did exactly that which is what caused Brown to make such an egregious mistake. Aside from all of that what difference does it make how Brown screwed up there? Whether he throws the ball to Worthy, out of bounds, or someone misses a shot, by no means does that lead to the conclusion that UNC somehow had the game “given” to them. The pressure and obligation was still on the Hoyas to actually make a shot and win the game. They failed to do that just as Syracuse failed to come back and win the game after the Keith Smart shot in 1987.
1993 NCAA Championship
This is actually much simpler. UNC is leading 73-71 when UNC forward Pat Sullivan misses the back end of a one and one with 19 seconds left. Michigan’s Chris Webber rebounds the ball and then in a confused moment drag his pivot foot before starting to dribble which is not called by the referee. He the dribbles himself down into the right corner where he is immediately trapped by the two best defenders UNC has in the persons of George Lynch and Derrick Phelps. Since Webber realized there was no way he would be able to get the ball out of the corner he called a timeout Michigan did not have which resulted in a technical foul. Donald Williams sinks four straight free throws to bring his point total to 25 for the second straight game(which was probably also a fluke in the mind of the commenter.) It also should be noted that UNC had three fouls to give there and could have easily burned most of the remaining 11 seconds by playing aggressive defense or just fouling three times. So, just like 1982, UNC was ahead in the game needing only to play good defense to walk out of the Superdome the national champion. They did just that by forcing Webber down in the corner where he could not get a pass out. Webber actually traveled before we even reached that point but the ref missed the call so what ended up happening actually bailed the refs out for botching that call.
The point is in both situations UNC earned the win in every way that counted. They had the lead late in the game with only a good defensive stand between them and the national championship. If anything I think it is more of a case of the two respective players choking the game away or botching their team’s chance to attempt to tie or win the game rather than it being “given” to UNC/Dean Smith.
So I have no problem with someone arguing Knight over Smith on various levels. That is the great thing about sports is that there are such debates. However, I would think if Knight is truly better than Smith then you should be able to argue the point without resorting to arguments as ignorant and devoid of common sense as those labeling the titles under Smith as flukes.
For a second consecutive game UNC played great defense and despite further turnover problems a balance offense help the Heels dominate the game. For the first half it was the long absent perimeter game and the play of Reyshawn Terry who had 10 points and two threes. The interior game was largely absent but UNC took advantage of the GT miscues to score several baskets off turnovers. In the second half, it was the same tried and true strategy we have seen in earlier games and that was a focused effort to get the ball to Hansbrough which resulted in him netting 24 points with 14 of them coming from the FT line. Brandan Wright failed to reach double figures for the first time in his collegiate career with nine. Outside those three, UNC got the rest of the scoring largely by committee….a huge committee which really illustrates the danger of playing UNC. Not only do you have to worry about stopping Hansbrough or Wright, possibly even Terry but anyone else who might decide to get hot and hit a three pointer at an inopportune time in the game.
The question moving forward as UNC moves a half game behind Boston College who lost badly at Clemson is whether the two game defensive effort is a permanant pattern or a short lived reaction to a loss which will eventually settle into complacency revealing the same issues with effort and intensity on the defensive end. I would hope the lessons of the Virginia Tech game are lasting ones and the UNC team we see now is very close where they need to be defensively speaking.
Now if we could just hold onto the ball a little better, as thought that has really mattered in the final margin.
So, this game rated a visit from the College Game Day folks and (shudder) Dick Vitale. Good to see Huber Davis back in the Dean Dome. He was one of my favorite players in the late 80s/early 90s. I think it will be a fairly entertaining game. Georgia Tech is second in the conference in points per game behind UNC which means it should be a track meet and GT has more depth than any team UNC has played all season. Live blogging after the jump.

Basically this game will come down whether GT can do anything with the Tar Heel duo on the interior. Last year Hansbrough went for a UNC freshman record of 40 points rallying UNC from some ridiculous margin in the first half for the win. The question is whether or not UNC can dominate the middle that way again. The other intriguing matchup is among the freshmen. In the old days Ty Lawson vs Javaris Critteton and Thaddeus Young vs Brandan Wright would be something to watch for four years. This could be the only year you see all of these guys playing at the same time. Add Wayne Ellington to the mix and it should be a fun game especially since both of these teams love to run the floor. I think UNC is simply the better team and the Jackets will not have an answer for the Heels’ interior game.
UNC 102 Georgia Tech 80
As is always the case in January and February, the ACC has a full slate today starting with BC at Clemson and ending tonight with GT at UNC. In between we have Miami at FSU at 2 PM and Duke traveling to Raleigh to face the Wolfpack in what is sure to be a very tightly contested game at 3:30 PM on ABC.
Chris Clark on the 850 the Buzz blog has a nice rundown of today’s action including a link to an Andy Katz article featuring Tyler Hansbrough.
