ACC Basketball Schedule Breakdown

ACC Now has a breakdown of the ACC schedule for the upcoming basketball season.  The order of things will be released in August but this will give you a glimpse of UNC faces in the ACC next season.

UNC

Twice: N.C. State, Duke, Miami, UVa, Md
Home only: BC, Clemson, GT
Road only: Wake, FSU, VT

Analysis: The visit to Winston-Salem might be the Heels only ACC loss next season.

The game at Duke probably carries as much risk as the Winston-Salem visit does in fact more so. I am fairly certain the Duke players will be well aware that Hansbrough, Green, Ginyard and Frasor will be there to collect the deed for Cameron should the Heels win a fourth straight game on Coach K court.  Of course the Duke crowd will be all about giving Ty Lawson grief about his traffic violations.  Miami is being hyped as possibly the 3rd best team in the ACC so playing them twice is no gift by any stretch.

On the other hand getting UVa and MD twice is absolutely a gift.  Regardless of what NCSU may have lost I always cast a wary look in the general direction of southwest Raleigh(granted I do that anyway but even more so between September and April)  Among the small favors on the schedule: No trips to Boston, Littlejohn or Atlanta since the latter two always seem like a death trap for UNC.

VT sports a young team and a good coach so Blacksburg will not be a picnic but at the same time should be completely winnable.  Playing at FSU promises to simply be annoying given the style of play you get from the Noles.  That leaves Wake Forest who will matchup favorably with the Heels but thankfully it is only once.  The question for that one will be “When?”  Who and when you play prior to that game could dictate how it unfolds and also if they stick it on at 3:30 on Saturday afternoon which is historically a poor timeslot for UNC to play.

Yeah, it is only July…sucks doesn’t it?

Especially if that game is televised by ABC… only barely escaping our last such scheduled game against BC on March 1 – the Tyrese Rice break out game

  • I was thinking of the Maryland game which was an ABC game at 3:30 on a Sat.

I wouldn’t overlook Duke in Chapel Hill, either. Those guys are going to think last year was no fluke, and they’ll want to ruin Tyler and Co.’s Senior Night just like Tyler did to J.J. Although only one of Duke’s current players played that night, I’m sure the rest watched with the Crazies, having committed to Duke on the promise of taking over for that 2006 senior laden team and top recruiting class ahead of them. Who knew?

Analysis: Giglio needs to trim that soul patch. It may be affecting his reasoning ability. Wake may be markedly better than Duke next season, but UNC-Duke is still UNC-Duke.

The BC game was more like the Tyrese Rice break out first half.

And thanks for okaying my avatar, THF. ;-)

  • That Maryland game. You had to bring that up. That was the first sporting event I had the “pleasure” of watching on my then brand new 47″ HDTV… Regarding Duke this year, how many times have the Heels won four straight at Cameron? Has to be a short list.

I’d like to go on record now with a prediction of a VPI win over UNC next year. Not that it gives me much pleasure, but I think they’re certainly on the upswing.

  • They are. Va Tech will be in the upper tier of the ACC. Probably fourth or fifth battling it out with Miami behind UNC, Duke and WF. That game in Blacksburg, depending on when it falls, could have all the makings of a “trap game”

As much as I hate to admit it, watching games during seasons like this are gut wrenching. You think we should win every game because we’re loaded, but that isn’t the case in the ACC. Going undefeated is hard as heck (hey, I sounded like Roy). Watching games during seasons like the 05-06 season is more fun since my expectations were lower and we overachieved. However, crushing the Pack and beating Dook at Cameron this year will certainly settle my gut!

I’ve moved out of the mother land recently, does any one know how easy or hard it is to get tickets to other Home games for say Maryland Virginia or VT (When the Heels come to town)?

  • Could be dicey because UNC always brings the crowds out. VT seats so few and the students will come out in force to support the Hokies with the Heels in town. I expect the same for UVa and MD though they are probably your best bet because they play in larger arenas.

Well, I truly believe that the Heels can run the table in the ACC. Look, this particular group of kids do not buckle down to the pressures of playing in Cameron. Over the past three seasons, the Heels have done more than any other team to strip Duke of their mythical status is some infallible program that defines sheer perfection at the collegiate level. What a load of crap that was, for what, 14-15 years? The 2005 team helped to turn the tide, and Tyler and Co. slammed it home on Senior Night ‘06 at Cameron.

So, I think that win number four (at Cameron, for the seniors) is a reality that the Duke faithful must prepare for. The only thing that concerns me is that we will play Duke at Cameron in the middle of the ACC schedule as opposed to the end. As we all know, Coach K has his team trained to peak in February (not March or April…anymore), so this win will be about as difficult as any. However, when UNC does win, they should name a section of Coach K’s court after Tyler Hansbrough.

The two games that jump out at me are the Miami and Wake road games. The latter game is of great concern because those Wake kids will be playing loose and fancy-free.

And yes HeelYeah, the games will be gut-wrenching,

    KeithUNC,

You can effectively write off the UNC game Maryland. The only game that brings the Terps out more than UNC is Puke since. All the more so since they ended our undefeated season last year and upset us big time in College Park the year before.

Oh well thanks. I will have to try though. Had to move to delaware. SO will try somewhere.
