The Stackhouse Dunk

Jerry Stackhouse was on 850 this morning talking with Adam Gold about the Greater NC ProAm. The GNCPA is a summer league that includes NBA players and local college talent with a sprinkling of other players.  Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace, Raymon Felton, Sean May, Marvin Williams, Antawn Jamison, Shammond Williams, Byron Sanders, David Noel and Melvin Scott are among the notable UNC alumini participating.  Current players Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, Danny Green, Ed Davis, Justin Watts and Larry Drew are also involved.  The games are being played at NCCU’s McLendon-McDougald Gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays through August 5th.  There will then be a weekend tournament August 9-11.  Admission is free if you are so inclined to check out some of the action.

Following the Stackhouse interview, Gold talked to former UNC color man Mick Mixon who talked briefly about the Stackhouse dunk in Cameron during the 1995 season.  Mixon called it one of the best dunks he had ever seen and most of us would find it difficult to choose between that one and the Danny Green posterization of Greg Paulus.  I have posted two videos of the Stackhouse dunk after jump.  One has the UNC radio feed and the other from ESPN.  Enjoy!

Thanks, THF, that started the day right. Another feel good clip–Rasheed vs. Dook…

I bet Byron Sanders is dominating that league.

  • HeelYeah

I mean really, could guys named Eric Meek and Cherokee Parks ever really hope to stop a guy named Jerry Stackhouse? That was just a plain old nasty dunk in two classic Dookies’ mouths.

In honors of Tar Heels in the Olympics, here is my favorite
    dunk.

  • I hear a new class is being added to the Coach K basketball camp:

Becoming Immortal: The Art of Being Dunked taught by Eric Meek and Cherokee Parks with special lecture by Greg Paulus.

  • That performance and the one (97 or 98)where Vince Carter went off on Duke was some of the best performances since Michael Jordan IMO. Stackhouse and Carter knew how to be assassins in some of those games. They had a pregame mentality of (stick it to ‘em) and they went out and executed. In those two games, no one, I mean no one was going to stop Stackhouse and Carter (later in 98).

Green’s dunk get my vote just because it was Paulus. Meek and Cherokee weren’t on my hate list. Awesome dunk by Stack though, Dickie V went nuts!

  • HeelYeah

I think Green’s dunk takes the cake since he served some ‘nut salad’ to Paulus. You can’t beat that!

Does anybody remember the Stackhouse dunk against Virginia Tech? The game was played in Greensboro and I was lucky enough to be ballboy for the game–sitting underneath the basket where the dunk occurred. I remember thinking–”wow this is really amazing up close!” It was only later that I realized that even to this day, it was one of the nastier dunks in college basketball history. Of course, the one against Dook will always take the cake.

Here’s the VaTech dunk (about6 2:48 in). If you look carefully you can see Cherry wet himself.

I still think Carter’s dunk over Duncan may be the best dunk I’ve seen a UNC player make. Look at where he takes off from and how he adjusts in the air.

The Stackhouse dunk gets the nod in my book. It was more athletic and he did it against 2 defenders (I like Mixon’s “14 feet” comment) who didn’t flop.

A friend of mine–who went to State while I was at UNC and who couldn’t care less about college athletics–mistakenly called #44 “Iroquois” Parks one day way back when. I’ve never referred to him as Cherokee since. ;-)

UNC33, I’d forgotten the duck over Duncan, truly awesome.

BTW, this year’s dunk by Tyler over George is the “most in your face big guy” I’ve seen.

  • Vince Carter is the best dunking machine I have ever seen. Yes Stackhouse was great. Yes, MJ was great. Yes, Doc J was great. Yes, Shawn Kemp-Clyde Drexler-Dominique Wilkins. Vince has them all beat in my opinion. While the Duncan dunk was great, he still has other numerous ones that are even better. BTW, thanks for giving that link to us. I love watching VCarter put it on Duncan.

  • Wilf, I really felt bad for KGeorge after that Dunk. He looks so much like a gentle Giant, and I knew that the much undersized Tyler was capable of doing that to him, and he did. Looking forward to seeing Tyler do it again this year against Olek/Plumlee/Singler.

I wonder if Paulus will provide the incoming Dook dorks with invaluable insight as to what type of salt they should bring to either UNC game, lest they get a healthy serving of nuts.

Back to the dunkage, the best Vince-UNC dunk was one that never happened. In the 97-73 demolition of #1 Dook in the first meeting in ‘98, Vince took an alley high off of the backboard, but threw it down to far to the back of the rim. The result? The ball bounced out to AO and he pitched it over to Shammond who nailed a three. I always thought that Vince deserved a .5 assist for that three.

All of these posts and yet no mention of the Marvin Williams dunk vs. VT in ‘05. He levitated with the defender literally draped all over his frame. He took to guys up, one came down Marvin Williams and the other came down as a poster child.

  • Johnny,

That was not Cherry it was McNairy who was a high school teammate of Stackhouse if memory serves.

UNC just a tradition of ridiculous dunkers. Just look at this future Tar Heel.

  • Nice Link. It also showed Leslie McDonald in action as well.

I stand guilty of calling all fair-haired bench guys Cherry. :(
