Heels Survive

No thanks to the refs who nearly screwed UNC out of the win by overturning Brooks Foster’s first down catch.  They managed to get the call right in the end to secure the Tar Heel win.

Big win for UNC.

More to come.

What are you talking about the refs?

Notre Dame was supposed to get both calls down the stretch and apparently the CFA is going to undertake an investigation to find out why the Irish did not get the ball at the 5 with 1 second to play. Notre Dame would never have agreed to play UNC otherwise.

We owe those refs big time for bucking the establishment and refusing to give the Irish the second call. That took a lot of guts.

I’m really liking Shaun Draughn. Although he bears little resemblance – other than the number 20 – to Famous Amos or The Natrone Bomb, I love seeing #20 run the ball!

  • You have to love his tenacity & aggresive style. The Tyler Hansbrough of Carolina Football?

  • Glad to see we will be retaining our #22 position in the ranks. How hurt is Tate & Carter?

Was the overruling on the pass completion by the Tar Heels the worst overruling anyone has ever seen? I believe the college standard is too high and that a better standard is clear and convincing evidence as opposed to indisputable evidence, but given the rule as it is, the overruling was inexplicable.

My favorite two comments from Notre Dame fans in my section. First, while ND was up 17-9 at halftime, one of them yelled, “UNC, stick to basketball.” Next, after a first down on a short run, another one said,” Thank the ACC refs for your nice spot of the ball.” Umm, they were Big 10 officials.

I’m not smart enough to tell the difference between “clear and convincing” and “indisputable”.

PRGuy, they weren’t Big Ten officials, they were from the Big East.

Indisputable, to me, means no one but a blind man could disagree. Clear and convincing means that the instant reply probably means the officials on the field were wrong, but we are willing to allow a greater degree of oversight due to the speed on the field which leads to mistakes.

  • The reason it is indisputable evidence as opposed to anything else is that keeps the officiating on the field. The call made by the refs on the field is assumed correct until there is evidence no one can dispute overturns it. If you back that standard down then you run the risk of more plays being reviewed picking apart minor rules interpretation. In terms of the Foster play I still have yet to see “indisputable evidence” that overturns the call on the field.

On my drive home, everyone on the Tar Heel Radio Network kept referring to them as Big 10 officials. If they’re from the Big East, that almost makes that ND fan’s comments even more absurd.
