Things I Am Thankful For…

…after watching the BCS Championship.

I am thankful that should UNC win the NCAA Championship game on April 6th that there will no debate as to who is the #1 team in the nation.

I am thankul that following the ACC Tournament I do not have to wait 50-plus days without basketball to watch while talking head discuss the potential matchups incessantly.

I am thankful that when the college basketball postseason starts it is packaged up neatly for my viewing pleasure into various conference tournaments and then an easily viewed national tournament.

I am thankful every game in the NCAA Tournament means something.

I am thankful the loss to Boston College did not effectively eliminate UNC from the national title chase.

I am thankful that college basketball has brackets and we can endlessly debate then be shocked when some lowly directional school hands a major conference team their lunch.

I am thankful that college basketball decides the champion entirely on the court.  Play well enough you get a bid.  Win six games you get the title.

Life should be simple and so should winning national titles.

I guess after all has been said and done, Florida, Utah, Texas, and Southern Cal can make a claim that they are truly number 1. If I were a gambler and they had a 4 team final mini tournament, my money would be on Southern Cal. That early Thursday night game in which they lost to Oregon State cost them the whole thing.

Can you explain to me why Ron Cherry was refereeing the so-called national championship game?

    THF,
Two questions for you as well. One, piggy backs on to what LarryP asked you. Is it any surprise that last night’s BCS Championship was one of the worst officiated games of the season given Ron Cherry was the referee? Is the BCS title game officiating crew not merit based. Not giving any excuses to Oklahoma, but OU runs a tempo based offense and there were several inexplicable delays that slowed down OU’s momentum and then there was no call or no flag.
Second, and I asked you this following the Carolina-CofC game. Did you already know that Ademola Okulaja had cancer? I read it on Tar Heel Times, they had a link to it from an article that ran in Slam Magazine Online on Dec. 28.
I just find it odd that no Carolina connected site has done a story on this. The article said he is battling for his life and gives the reader an opportunity to purchase an Okulaja T-Shirt with the No. 13, his image and in Carolina Blue above the word Warrior. You can also get one in his German National team colors and his German Pro Team. The proceeds go to a children’s cancer charity. It also says he was diagnosed with cancer in July.
I yahoo and google searched Okulaja and no other media outlet has picked up on this story. I find it odd, considering how much he meant to Carolina Basketball.

  • I am looking for more info now on it. I will post something, maybe this evening and maybe it will get noticed since this site is read by some media folks.

  • And I have no idea how Ron Cherry ended up calling that game. The BCS officials are on a rotation among the six conferences and I presume the exclude the two conferences that are participating. The Big 12 called the game last year. The ACC was up this season. I know there have to be better officials in the ACC than Cherry. The rumor ahead of the game was that Jack Childress would be officiating and Florida fans were pissed because he screwed FL at some point, possibly in the FSU game. Cherry has a penchant for lots of plays being reviewed and tossing the hankie for personal fouls and what not. Last night was more of the same.

I have an idea that Cherry became the darling of those in charge of such things last season when he announced that a player was guilty of “givin’ the business.” I know it made the announcers laugh.

Any info you find THF about Ademola Okulaja would be great. Thank you for looking into it for us.

I am thankful that we don’t have to play teams like Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, or USC. After watching these guys play, the Heels (and every other ACC team) look slow and small. Why can’t we get a QB that is even half the player Tebow is (or for that matter Russell Wilson)?

  • I am thankful that I am a Carolina fan and not a dook fan. I am thankful that Billy Packer won’t be calling the Final Four. I am thankful for Roy Williams. I am thankful that I have had the opportunity to watch Tyler Hansbrough as a Heel. I am thankful for the character of the guys on our team.
