UNC-NC State Game Thread

Here is some classic Danny Green talking about the NCSU fans to start things off:

“From our perspective, their fans are kind of crazy, a lot of country guys over there, they’re pretty harsh; they speak their mind, they say whatever comes to mind, they try to hurt your feelings, and it’s probably one of the toughest places to play.

You’ve got the wolf howling in the background, which is kind annoying. And then when they run out, one time I got hit by one of the batons when they were swinging the flags — I got hit with one of those in the head; that was kind of annoying, too. It’s a tough place to play with all of the fans in the crowd; they get into it.”

lol Danny–well said–would like to hear the private version!

  • heeledsoul

noooooooo! i was hoping for the liveblogging after having missed the last one. well, i can’t complain. i really appreciate all that you do for the fans, THF! btw, hope your finger’s doing better.

  • uncgirl50

Ok Heels. Lets do this. Get out there and play! GO HEELS! BEAT STATE!

  • uncgirl50

Listening to Woody. That wolf howl is annoying.

  • Liveblogging gets dictated by familial obligations. I am home with two of my kids who are napping but they will be up in an hour which means I cannot pay full attention to the blog. I will be liveblogging any night game left on the schedule with the possible exception of the VT game in March.

Finger has to be splinted for 6-8 weeks and if I bend it I have to start the clock over. Hopefully I will be healed up for the NCAA Tournament.

  • uncgirl50

Yes! Danny should have great game today.

  • uncgirl50

I hate when opposing crowds boo at obvious fouls. Its so annoying.

  • heeledsoul

degand is scared of lawson. nice to see.

  • uncgirl50

Offensive boards: Too many for them, not enough for us.

  • uncgirl50

My timeouts are so lonely without the liveblog. :( No big deal though. I have my dog to talk to.

  • 1st time in awhile the 2nd unit did not make a mess of things. Of course Roy left Lawson in for the first seven minutes or so which helped.

  • uncgirl50

What the heck is that announcer wearing? A ref shirt? Why?

  • I am not sure what should be done with Deon Thompson. He got caught out of position and allowed Horner to hit a three then comes down and commits a hand check foul 19 feet from the basket.

  • uncgirl50

We need to stop taking hasty shots.

What is Bobby wearing on his leg?

Refs aren’t calling as many “fouls” on us but I see the state gaurds using the forearm many times.

    Ty Lawson has been amazing.

How many points has Tyler racked up? 6?

Davis has been doing quite well.

    Offensive boards are a problem.

    That howl is extremly annoying.

That red headed state player looks like Ron Weasley from Harry Potter. :p

  • Joe Kendrick dj_joek

is this game online by chance?

  • uncgirl50

    LAWSON IS MY HERO!!!

Not sure if its online check the site that it’s usually on.

  • uncgirl50

Woot woot! Great first half for the Heels other than letting State get too many offensive boards and turning it over.

  • heeledsoul

yeah THF, the only thing state has going for them is when their bigs hit the long jumper before deon or ed can get back to defend after stepping up to disrupt the guard. but if that’s all, i’ll take it. let them shoot those. that doesn’t scare me.

also, the announcers keep talking about state missing from so close to the basket. but i think that’s because our defenders have done a great job playing tight defense without fouling, and state is shooting tough shots albeit from close distance.

  • heeledsoul

yeah uncgirl50, that was a nice way to finish off the 1st half. let’s not pull another FSU and lose the lead to start off the 2nd half.

  • heeledsoul

so… it looks like ND lost AGAIN. and louisville is set to host uconn on monday. i’m rooting for louisville so that uconn gets to be the next #1 to last just a week.

  • Yes, the only reason NCSU is as close as they are is because of open looks given to Horner and Ferguson. The interior defense has a lot to do with NCSU missing shots much the same way Wake’s defense had a lot to do with UNC missing similar shots in that game.

  • heeledsoul

always nice to see wayne’s 3s drain.

  • heeledsoul

state fans booing again. i hope they’re booing their team cuz that was a clear foul to stop lawson’s fast break.

  • uncgirl50

We better get our butts back on defense.

  • heeledsoul

“what does hansbrough have that costner doesn’t?” a PG like lawson, says dykes.

IS HE KIDDING? I HOPE SO!
costner also doesn’t have the toughness, the determination, or the maturity. WOW.

  • uncgirl50

Why does the second half always seem to last longer than the first half in games like these?

  • heeledsoul

WOW!!! that was tyler’s best block i’ve ever seen!

  • uncgirl50

This is FSU all over again.

  • uncgirl50

Are you joking? The threes! Stop with the threes!

  • heeledsoul

not for tyler. no FSU. just gotta lock down on fells. maybe try danny there instead of bobby?

  • scott watkins badbadleroybrown

I agree, Danny on the D. I would really like a video of all the Davis blocks in this game, so nice to see that stat increasing.

Lawson making a statement with this game. This hot hand thing is just bad, spicy like a wing.

    Go Heels!

  • heeledsoul

i guess danny is guarding horner. gosh. we need ginyard.

  • heeledsoul

YES! ty is the man. i hope the buzzer beater at FSU was the switch that made ty this much more assertive.

  • uncgirl50

Glad they keep fouling. Its helping us out alot. As soon as they get in foul troble we should be ok.

  • heeledsoul

    oh shooot. danny has 4.

  • heeledsoul

that was a foul on deon, not tyler!!!

  • uncgirl50

    What is with the fouls????

  • uncgirl50

Foul trouble and layups are our friends.

  • uncgirl50

    OMG! TYLER FOR THREEEEE!

  • heeledsoul

“tyler hasn’t had a three until this year”
hmmm. what about the one against dook as a freshman?
gosh. if you don’t know, you just make stuff up, don’t you. that’s just great, nessler.

  • uncgirl50

“Now the crowd is leaving like they’re giving something away in the parking lot.” -Woody Durham

    HA! NOW WHOS LEAVING?

  • heeledsoul

    COPELAND!

  • heeledsoul

    haha. nice one woody.

  • uncgirl50

I can’t wait rub this is the faces of my state friends. This is totally sweet!

  • 52bgJ

it is positively sinful the joy I get from knowing how much ths burns the Pack fans getting blistered in their own house.

  • heeledsoul

wow. i know what cope did was unnecessary but that doesnt excuse the hard foul by mccauley when a man is in the air!

  • uncgirl50

OH NO HE DIDN’T CHEAP CHEAP SHOT BY CLASSES LOSER!

  • heeledsoul

good game heels! hold your head up cope. i know you just wanted to be on the scoreboard against a rival.

  • C. Michael

If I were Roy, Copeland wouldn’t dress again.

  • keith harrell keithunc

C.Micheal would you feel the same if it was Hansbrough or Lawson??

  • uncgirl50

Poor Cope. He wont be playing much for a while but he was right in going after the guy. Im glad a fight didnt break out but I wish McCauley ill health.

  • william

Deon could be a little more careful about the fouls he commits, yes.

And TarHeelWoman, that guy for NC State with the red hair looks like Danny Bonaduce, if you know who that is.

  • C. Michael

In short, yes. McCauley’s foul didn’t warrant that.

  • C. Michael

“NC State with the red hair looks like Danny Bonaduce.”

Very much so. Let’s hope he doesn’t have the same coke problem!

BTW, did Will Graves play today???

  • uncgirl50

I don’t think Will did play. Any idea why anyone?

  • Bill Otis rathskellar68

C.Michael — I agree that it was hardly a way for Copeland to reward Roy for letting him get some game time (indeed it was an embarrassment), but Copeland has had a lot of frustration, and he’s still just 20 years old or thereabouts. I wouldn’t banish him, that’s too harsh.

Besides, with a bench this thin, you want to have at least the possibility of playing him.

P.S. Are you signing up to be my stockbroker yet?

  • Per Roy’s postgame:

Copeland was wrong, it was a hard foul but did not warrant that reaction. Roy apologized to Sidney Lowe and Ben McCauley apologized to Roy. Roy told him not to worry about it, he was playing hard.

I will say I am glad to hear McCauley apologized since I was ready to call him a punk for yapping his lips on the way back to the bench.

Re: Graves. Apparently Roy did not want to play him. And that is all he said.

Also, Roy pulled Hansbrough out at the 17 min mark in the first half because he did not box out. Roy was pissed.

  • william

Copeland might have overreacted but that redneck had it coming.

  • C. Michael

    rathskellar68,

I’m going to stick to picking off-the wall upsets for now… much more predictable than the market! ;)

  • uncgirl50

    These are Facebook status messages:

    “being a state fan suks”

“why am i a state fan”

    I love games like these.

McCauley is now my least favorite state player. EVER

  • william

NC State has this big redneck ethic about how you protect the court and you don’t let the other team have gimmes even in garbage time. I don’t think any of our guys, Hansbrough included, should be constantly doing this thing where they go after the guy who commits the hard foul. Let the ref’s do it, or just wait and get the guy back in the next game.

That being said, NC State has had a nothing basketball program ever since they fired Herb Sendek and they are getting exactly what their caliber of fan deserves for the why they treated Sendek. Enjoy the basement, Wolfpack, because you richly deserve it.

There was obviously no point to the foul and only a punk would try a stunt like that. It also was an intentional foul, for all you guys who have decided to come down so hard Copeland .

  • Bill Otis rathskellar68

I was glad to see TH crack 30 after being held to 8 by FSU.

As to Graves, Roy gave him what his play has earned, namely, a seat on the bench.

  • C. Michael

I personally didn’t find the foul egregious. It was hard, but McCauley did do it from behind and he didn’t go low. If you are gonna dry to dunk in the last seconds of a 15+ game, you have to be willing to accept a clean foul.

  • keith harrell keithunc

William, we have to call them Appalachian Americans now. :)

  • william

I am surprised by that point of view, because this foul was actually less defensible than the Gerald Henderson foul on Hansbrough, in some respects.

It was an intention foul from behind on the guy’s head with 3 seconds to play when the defender’s team was behind by 15 points.

It was egregious and punk and perfectly in keeping with the institution for whom he was playing, because it was pointless, just like NC State’s basketball program.

I guess NC State should be glad that they are the “class” of North Carolina in football, because they are a humiliating fourth in basketball.

  • william

It wasn’t clean. It was an intentional foul with three seconds to play. The definition of that type of foul is “unclean.”

  • PRGuy

That little Wuffie hand puppet thing the State fans do is lame. Seriously. It doesn’t look like a wolf, it looks like a shadow puppet for a deer. And you know what happens to deer when you shine a spotlight on them. And I don’t have any love for Clemson fans, except I understand they were chanting “Ronald Weasley” at Trevor Ferguson. Now that’s funny.

  • william

I also wasn’t sure what those “Kay, this is for you” t-shirts were supposed to mean.

  • uncgirl50

I changed the wolf puppet thing to a ram. :) I simply folded the ears. Now whenever one of my friends does that, I do the ram and they get mad at me because its “their thing”.

Here is a posting from Moose, an honors student at State from Statefansnation:

That was a total classless play by unc to try to score and dunk at the end. Copeland deserved everybit of what he got from the foul and from getting throwed out. Carolina is a classless program. Duke has more class then Carolina and ol Roy.

  • Bill Otis rathskellar68

C.Michael — Fair enough, but remind me to gfet a hold of you when it’s time to do the NCAA office pool.

My guess is that the top 7 in next week’s poll will look like this:

    UConn
    Oklahoma
    Dook
    Carolina
    Louisville
    Pitt
    Wake

Personally, I see no reason that Dook should be ranked ahead of us (their loss to Michigan was worse than ours to BC), but these poll voters are loathe to knock a team down too far.

  • C. Michael

    Will do.

  • william

Marquette only beat State by 3 in Raleigh.

  • uncgirl50

So now were the classless ones? Fouling a guy hard from behind is classy now? where have I been?

  • Bill Otis rathskellar68

william — If Moose is an “honors student,” that tells you everything you need to know about the academic quality at NCS.

  • accsecblog

    Regarding the last second foul…

It was a hard foul. Was it cheap? No. McCauley was going to make sure Copeland didn’t score and was going for the ball.

Was it out of frustration? Probably. I think McCauley felt Copeland, lets face it is a bench warmer who was trying to score when he got in, was trying to tack on one more that was unnecessary at NC State’s court.

Got to defend McCauley on this one. It was a hard foul, but it wasn’t a cheap shot. If you are going to try and score in the last second when you are leading by 15 on the road in the ACC you better expect someone to try and stop you.

Just an honest opinion from an outsider on the situation. I would have done the same thing back in my HS days.

  • uncgirl50

I honestly don’t think McCauley was going for the ball. He was trying to foul Cope. Was he trying to foul him hard? No. Was it a dirty foul? No. Was it clean? No. It was simply a frustration foul. Should he have fouled him? No.

  • william

And what if Copeland had lost his footing and gone down and been permanently injured? There is no excuse and if people play like that in high school then maybe we need to take a look at how high school ball is officiated.

  • 52bgJ

Agreed william–”parts is parts”. There’s no way to justify it, but at least Ben did apologize, which is more than the prick over in Dur-Ham did. In both cases there was a hard swipe down–that is much different than a grab.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone remember the last time we’ve seen a UNC player take a shot like this? Maybe going back to the Rice/Reid/Bucknall group (or the Frank McGuire group), one could cite an example, but thankfully, it’s just not done at UNC.

  • Steve the State Fan

Random observations from an opposing fan, so just ignore me if you like:

    1) Result was as expected, so not a tough loss at all for me. At no time did I think, “hey, we could win this.”
    2) Ty Lawson was really good today. It looked like he decided to play some defense.
    3) State is slow of foot and does not have much leadership on the court
    4) State really needs an ACC caliber point guard. I’d take a C-USA caliber point guard at this point.
    5) State has a lot of “spare parts” – guys who could contribute on a stronger team, but no one who can take charge and lead.
    6) The McCauley-Copeland incident was handled pretty well by officials and coaches. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal – a hard foul correctly called intentional and some overreaction in the heat of battle.

Enjoy watching your team the rest of the way – should be fun for you.

  • Big Apple Heel

52bgJ – speaking of “when was the last time/it’s just not done”, when was the last time someone in the Dean Dome threw garbage on the court?

  • 52bgJ

good point BAH! ftr–cheese–we throw cheese, lol.

props to Steve–always classy, but remember Steve–Kenny Smith, Tyler, Ty–it’s not like similar stuff hasn’t happened before, but I’m like william-don’t get mad, get even.

  • heeledsoul

wow. steve, i didn’t think i would agree with anything a state fan said about this game but surprising to me, i agree with all your points. you learn new things everyday, i guess.

i do think it is an intentionally hard foul when a guy smacks the player across the head with his arm from behind and then walks off the court saying “not in my house.” however, i don’t blame mccauley for not appreciating a unc player wanting to score in that sitaution. and i also don’t blame cope for going after the guy in the heat of the moment. seriously, most of us would have done that.

rathskellar, i agree with your standings for the most part. although in that case, wake seems to not be getting any credit for beating a #1 team. i might swap pitt for wake.

  • Steve the State Fan

52bgJ, don’t worry, I have a pretty good memory. Memories are all I have to help me cope :*). In fact, sometimes I remember things that didn’t happen, but I wish that they had. Who needs reality?

BTW, I think it was Harrison Beck who was throwing stuff onto the court, but to his credit, he was aiming for the trash can on his way out of the RBC. Dude has a hell of an arm.
