Now you understand why UNC dropped the Ginyard/Graves news last night. No one will be talking about it today.
UNC is set to bring in a very highly rated recruiting class. Some are calling it the best UNC has ever had. Scout.com has the class listed 3rd overall based on the commitments. Rivals.com puts the class 8th overall. On the basis of the rankings, which can be taken as only a small part of the equation in building a program, this is a good day for UNC football. Getting highly rated players is important because you cannot develop or teach talent. At the same time there is a lot of work to be done on the part of the coaches and the players to ensure this translates onto the field.
Here is a quick roundup of articles and links worth perusing today.
Interviews with Butch Davis: ACC Now, 850 the Buzz
ACC Now has a rundown of UNC’s class.
Should be a good day for the Heels on the football front that we certainly hope brings some glory down the road.

Yeah, right.
William, LOL!
Are we guilty of dishing out too many scholarships? I know there was supposed to be some degree of difficulty if a certain number of players didn’t leave. How is that shaping up?
There were a bunch of 4th year guys like Cam Sexton who decided to graduate. I know there were some early enrollments, 2-3 medical harships, 2 players thrown off the team during the season and at least one other transfer. Plus all of the guys who sign will not be there come August.
How is the soccer team looking for next year? We had a great season this year.
Wow William, you always seem to deal in the facts and good analysis, I can tell you I have friends at VT that can sense the UNC recruiting in VA and NC. They don’t like it. I have really enjoyed watching the football program progress and move forward, 07 to 08 was impressive. I know the last few games were tough but losing Tate was equivalent to Tyler and then the switch in QBs was difficult as well. Paschal was a key guy as well. Anyway, different than the past Davis is a good judge of skill and talent.
you know, it’s kinda neat that the basketball team is using the attention gathered by the football team to sneak in some significant news, hoping that there’s not much discussion of said news. When’s the last time THAT happened?
Gets me fired up about our football program – even in February. A consensus top 10 recruiting class certainly keeps those positive vibes going!
I admit that I am a beginner at statistical analysis of football. I did see an interesting article on Willie Parker this weekend. Apparently, he has disowned us.
Willie Parker did at least say that part of the blame was on him for a lackluster college showing, since I guess he didn’t produce in practice the way he has in the NFL. I know Bunting wasn’t a good coach, but I imagine if Willie had played even half as good in practice as he’s shown that he can, he would have been an integral part of our offense. I’d love to have him now…
I don’t get too caught up in all the recruiting hype, but I must say it is nice to have a highly rated group coming in. We are much improved, and hopefully these recruits can lay the foundation for some serious contention for BCS bowl bids in the future.
I agree with badbadleroybrown that the injuries we sustained this past season were extremely significant. To lose your #1 playmaker (and likely ACC POY) on offense and special teams, as well as your #1 QB, then your #1 defensive player just before the bowl game, well that’s a tough pill to swallow. And we still had a good season. Now if I could just get the taste of that State game out of my mouth… I hope we beat them by 50 in Chapel Hill on Feb. 18.
Early on, the key is getting the best players in North Carolina and then stealing a few from neighboring states. We laughed at Mack Brown about winning the “State Championship,” but it is a good place to build from, not only on the field but in recruiting. It really looks like Butch has done an excellent job keeping the good ones from NC and has stolen some real gems from nearby (the QB from up my way and the LB from SC spring to mind). Five more years of success and then you can start slugging away with the big boys of college recruiting.
At least a boy can dream, can’t he?
william, this is “tarheelfanblog.com” not “tarheelbasketballfanblog.com,” so let’s play nice. also, from what i’ve read, willie parker obviously doesn’t like to give UNC credit (by stating his high school instead of UNC in his introductions) and dislikes bunting, but he apparently likes what he sees in our current program under coach davis and also works out at chapel hill from time to time. so, i don’t think he’s really disowned us.
looks like the coaching staff didn’t really make any national signing day splashes this year (e.g., marvin austin and greg little) but did an amazing job keeping all the commits (jheranie boyd, josh hunter, johnnie farms, etc.), which was much in doubt. unc looks to end up with a top 5 recruiting class, which is phenomenal for the future of our program. as a fan of the tar heels and a fan of football, i’m personally delighted about the progress the coaching staff if making. it’ll be exciting to be able to enjoy both tar heel football and basketball for the foreseeable future!
I should totally snatch up tarheelbasketballfanblog.com and point it here.
I honestly don’t even remember him. I think I posted the link on here somewhere and it was a pretty interesting article. He is a decent NFL back, but he has also ended up in a pretty good situation. There seem to be a lot of other backs who are superior to him in a variety of ways. I actually don’t have a problem with guys speaking out when they feel that they have been mistreated. Lavernues Coles was not treated fairly by Bobby Bowden when he was at FSU and he does a similar thing by mentioning his high school.
Here it is again:
