ACC Tournament 1st Round Open Thread

The first upset as Clemson falls flat(shocking I know) and Georgia Tech sets up a battle of the crappy coaches versus FSU on Friday.

Georgia Tech going for the upset.  According to C.Michael, Lewis Clinch is playing like he is All-ACC.

Yeah, playing in potentially your last game in college does that to you.

Previous updates after the jump.

GT giving Clemson a run at the half, tied at 39.

Clemson-GT tipoff.  More people showing up for this one considering that GT is in Atlanta and Clemson is probably the next closest school.

C.Michael: The 3 point shooting has been abysmal. From my seats, the rims are hard to pick out from the stands. Not sure if the same is true on the court.  Could be a benefit to a team like UNC that works from inside out.

Virginia Tech earns a date with UNC beating Miami 65-47.  According to C.Michael, Miami basically laid down for the Hokies and UNC would have run either one of them off the court whether Lawson played or not.

Clemson-Georgia Tech up next where I am sure the ugliness will continue.

UPDATE: C.Michael reports: “Ugly…This is Big East basketball at it’s worst!”

VT 28 Miami 24 at the half.

Update: Here is the VT-Miami game at tipoff via C.Michael.  As you can see they are really packing them in for this one.

Photo courtesy THF Correspondent C.Michael who said he was sitting in the NCSU section and indicated there was “lots of flannel.”

ACC Tournament-1st Round

Noon: #8 Virginia Tech vs #9 Miami
2:00 PM: #5 Clemson vs #12 Georgia Tech
7:00 PM: #7 Maryland vs #10 NC State
9:00 PM: #6 Boston College vs #11 Virginia

I like buffets.  Put me at any pizza buffet or even Golden Corral and I am a happy man.  This is a basketball buffet so eat up but pace yourself.

Comments if you have them…

Lots of flannel but little silk? Enjoy!

  • keith harrell keithunc

    “Lots of Flannel”, love it.

    here ya go CM:

General Petraeus was walking through his camp one day, consulting with his staff, when he came upon a lamp on the ground. He picked it up, rubbed, and out came a genie.

The genie said to the General, “I will grant you one wish.”

The General replied, “easy, I wish that we will win this war. Here is a map of the Iraq and all of the warring factions. Please make us win the war.”

The genie responded, “No way General–even I’m not that powerful of a genie. I cannot grant you that wish.”

“Well,” the General responds, “then can you have NC State win just one ACC Tournament basketball game this year?”

The genie thinks for a moment, then says, “Let me see that map again.”

  • REPORT FROM C.MICHAEL

Sloppy play to start. Both teams forgot to set the alarm clocks this morning.

Miami can’t throw it in the ocean. It is also VERY cold in here which has to be effecting the play.

  • furrer4heisman

There’s a reason it’s really cold in there. The A/C was probably set anticipating A LOT more body heat.

One look at these pictures and the stadium photos from the football championship and I make my case for these games/tourneys to be held in North Carolina.

I’d rather play VT tomorrow without Ty……….

  • willie styron Wilf

That’s one fugly looking place to have the nations best basketball tourney…..

  • Let’s hope a tornado doesn’t blow through there this year.

  • Very vacant for an acct game. Thanks for the pics CM!

  • furrer4heisman

see you guys tomorrow. any chance at another live blog?

  • I think that once the football championship game is played in Charlotte they will be hard-pressed to move it due to its central location. Fans unaffiliated with either school participating will be more likely to go in Charlotte than Jacksonville or Tampa, I believe, since Charlotte doesn’t have a history of major college football and doesn’t have a “major” bowl game.

  • No liveblog since I will be at work, in fact the next liveblog will probably be the Sweet Sixteen should the Heels advance that far.

  • willie styron Wilf

Looks like VT will win a chance at the ‘Heels.

  • PRGuy

Flannel in the NC State section? I would have guessed denim.

  • Denim. Strings hanging down off of the tight blue jean shorts, and a raggedy t-shirt saying “Get’r'done” Is that what you’re trying to say? :)

  • willie styron Wilf

Lots of John Deere ball caps too….

  • Hank Williams Jr. shirt pin?

  • Heel To The End

looks like Kansas is playing for the NCAAT, despite a lack of big toe issues.

I went to the Georgia Dome for the regionals in 2006. Until I saw these pictures I forgot how bad that place was to watch a game. In the future, NCAA games there will probably be the mid-field, raised-court format.

  • Heel To The End

Vasallo and Delaney went 6 of 22. you just KNOW that will magically turn around tomorrow.

  • Down goes Kansas… to Baylor?!?

  • You can bank on it HeeltotheEnd!

  • LarryS

Congrats to Baylor! Too bad KU.

  • “Until I saw these pictures I forgot how bad that place was to watch a game. ”

CM said it is hard to make out the rim from the seats in there…might be a factor in the bad three point shooting seen so far.

  • Heel To The End

in the pics above, the seats to upper right, you arent even facing the court, youre looking to the left for 40 minutes. forget that.

i dont see why they can’t make an exception to the rule, and play the ACCT in the RBC. its State’s home court, but maybe not exactly in the same way a Cameron is for Dook, or Littlejohn, etc. How many college arenas share with a pro team, an/or are not really the main practice facility? IS the RBC State’s primary practice facility?

  • Brooks James BrooksJ

If they can’t see the rims, Dook is doomed. They live by the three.

  • The more bodies you get in there, the more obscure the orange seats will be, that should help.

  • Heel To The End

had a feeling GT would at least put up a good show today. playing with nothing to lose will do that.

apologies, THF, if you already posted this somewhere.
Tyler a 1st team All-American for The Sporting News. Ty on the 2nd team, as is Jeff Teague(?).

  • ^I will post it later…including some other info.

  • Will Ballard wb3

Just snagged courtside seats to the Coaches v. Cancer tournament at MSG next year. If you have an AmEx and are going to be there, go to ticketmaster

  • C.Michael: Tech is doing a great job manning up on Oglesby. “Deliverance” barely has room to breathe when he is off the ball.

  • willie styron Wilf

Looks like Clemson is done for the weekend.

  • Heel To The End

i’d say they just lost a 4 seed. maybe not. depends on rest of country.

  • 4 seed? Clemson is looking at a 6 possibly 7 seed now.

  • Heel To The End

i think they were expected to get a 4 by being EXPECTED to win at least a game, if not 2 this weekend.

now will an FSU, or ASU, Illinois, LSU, Syracuse, etc, move up?

  • uncgirl50

I was dying today. NONE of my teachers were/are showing the ACCT. I wish I could be here instead. I’m working on staying home tommorow.

Very interesting games so far. My brackets are so messed up.

  • Will Ballard wb3

“I’m working on staying home tommorow.”

If you got into UNC next year, you earned the right to take a few hours off and watch the game. But if you need to give an excuse, it’s that stomach bug going around.

  • uncgirl50

My sister had that. I just hope faking it doesn’t require actually throwing up. I would rather go to school and miss the game than throw up.

  • Will Ballard wb3

I have noticed that if you say you threw up in the bathroom, people have a tendency to believe you.

  • keith harrell keithunc

With Kansas out now maybe Roy can concentrate on our ACCT, ;)

  • uncgirl50

Excellent suggestion wb3. I’ll see what I can do.

  • Bill Otis rathskellar68

So Florida State, whom we beat and surpassed in the standings, gets to play a losing team that has no chance of post-season play, while we, who finished first, get to play a capable VTech team that will be fighting for its life to make it to the NCAA’s.

Is there something wrong with this picture?

  • uncgirl50

And we get to do it without a point guard. Yes something is very wrong.

  • Bill Otis rathskellar68

With Bobbykins at the point we’ll still have a good chance.

  • uncgirl50

I love me some Bobby Frasor and we have a good chance but the rest of the team needs to step up to make up for the lack of Ty.

  • C. Michael

Quick check in before I had back for the night games. I cannot reiterate how unimpressed my dad and I were with VT and Miami. 8 year olds move better without the ball.

As for UNC, we plan on heading to the team hotel before they leave for the game tomorrow, so I will try to get you an update on Lawson’s availability. The prevailing sentiment around the Dome is that we won’t see him this weekend.

  • Bill Otis rathskellar68

uncgirl — You better watch out. Tyler’s going to be plenty jealous when he sees you’ve been saying you love Bobby.

  • uncgirl50

Well I’ve found guys always want what they can’t have. Maybe this will work to my advantage.
