John Henson Is Awesome

SI.com did a round table at the Jordan Classic which included future Tar Heel John Henson, Duke signee Ryan Kelly, presently undecided Xavier Henry and UConn signee Alex Oriakhi.  Henson has quite a few gems including multiple jabs at Kelly playing up the Duke-UNC rivalry.

Here are some excerpts:

Who was the best recruiter on an in-home visit?

Kelly: I had Duke, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Wake Forest. Maybe even more. All pretty similar. Ate dinner then showed me film of players they feel I’d be similar to. I play the double bass in the school orchestra, and one coach got from my teacher a copy of the music that we were playing in a concert so they played it as the background music.

Henson: I’m gonna tell all the Carolina kids that you play bass. I bet it was Coach K who did the music.

Kelly: That’s OK. Everyone knows it back home. I’m not saying the coach.

Henson: Chapel Hill’s really gonna know now. Was it Wake Forest who played the music?

Kelly: I’m not saying.

Henson: Actually, the music sounds like a Georgetown joint.

What was your reaction to Brandon Jennings going to Europe last year? Did you consider it?

Henry: I was surprised he was really going overseas. I heard stuff about his test and why he had to go overseas.

Henson: I wasn’t surprised because I heard he was talking about it for a while. I thought it was kinda crazy. He didn’t pass the SAT, so he couldn’t play college, right? Well, I guess that’s the only option unless you go JUCO. He did what he had to do.

Kelly: Good for him. He’s pretty confident he would be an NBA player. He felt going overseas would be best way to go there. I don’t know if it would be an option I’d look at. Personally I’d want to get somewhat of an education.

Henson: True that. That’s a very Duke-like answer.

Henson also loved Steve Robinson and said one school sent him 250 letters….in one day.  Henson sounds like he might be another Danny Green with the way he talks to the media.

    True that.

What a refreshing and precocious young man. He has “leader” written all over him. I sure hope he stays longer than one year.

Can’t wait to see this kid in action.

lol–don’t know whether that reminds me more of Sam Cassell or John Salley. kid has brass–one (important) role already filled!

How’s this for an NCAA championship lineup:

    Thompson
    Davis
    Henson
    Ellington
    Wall

Is it likely? No way. Is it possible? Yep.

I know there will be concern that this lineup does not have Ginyard startng, but he could still play 20-25 minutes a game, and probably would. It also does not have Zeller starting, but he could get 15-18 minutes per game. And with all due respect to Kansas, the proposed lineup would be as talented, or more talented, than any in the country. Indeed, it has four probable-to-certain NBA players in it.

Hey, look, it’s the off-season. I’m allowed to dream.

not certain but i thought both wayne AND ty needed to leave early to extend a scholly to wall.

what about the kentucky all stars wall-meeks-henry-patterson-cousins with orton coming off the bench? i think even a drew-ginyard-henson-davis-thompson line up is better with zeller, dex, mcdonald and wear bros off the bench!

also on henson, he also said ryan kelly was destined to go to dook when he heard that his parents went to yale and upenn. haha. love that guy already!

  • Both have to leave to open a spot for Wall. If only one leaves then there is not a slot unless someone else goes.

THF — The operative phrase is “unless someone else goes.”

Or pays his own way, a la’ Wes Miller.

coach K was on the Colbert Report tonight to hawk his new book “The Gold Standard”.
i guess if winning the Olympic gold is about the whole program getting the NBAers to take the event seriously for the first time in years, and practicing more than once, then, yeah, i guess coach K had something to do with that. Or not.

Colbert was clearly wearing a tie in the shade of Carolina blue, by the way.

The Rat was also on Mike and Mike this morning, but I turned it off before having to hear his nasal drone.

Man, either retire or coach in the NBA. PLEASE. This guy loves the Olympic Gold stuff, never mind the fact that coaches like Dean and Bob Knight won it all with college players. The 2008 U.S. team coached themselves. Enough. Look at the impact the Olympic involvment has had on Dook recruiting. Then again, that is probably the talking point most Dook fans would like to focus on, so it would (like the “back injury” in 1994/95) excuse less-than-stellar results.
