UNC Alumni Game

As a part of the 100 years of Tar Heel basketball, UNC is hosting an alumni game on September 4th at the Dean Dome. The event will include a incredible list of great Tar Heel players over the past couple of decades:

Nine members of the 2005 team (Raymond Felton, Sean May, Rashad McCants, Byron Sanders, Reyshawn Terry, Jackie Manuel, Quentin Thomas, Marvin Williams and Jawad Williams) plus six from the 2009 squad (Tyler Hansbrough, Wayne Ellington, Ty Lawson, Danny Green, Bobby Frasor and Michael Copeland) are among the two dozen former Tar Heels players who have agreed to participate in the Pro Alumni Game.

The 8 p.m. event will tip off the yearlong 100th-year celebration of basketball at UNC, and the $20-per-ticket (still available at tarheelblue.com ) proceeds will go to the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and UNC Children’s Hospitals

Especially because there will be so many other All-American mixes, considering the rest of the pro alumni who have agreed to participate: Vince Carter, Joseph Forte, Brendan Haywood, Jamison, Jeff McInnis, Jerry Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace, Shammond Williams and Brandan Wright.

This will get billed as 2005 vs 2009,  though 2009 will be missing Deon Thompson and Ed Davis. For my money I would love this played out over 2-3 days with a “What Could Have Been” Team which would be made up of the 1997 team members Antawn Jamison, Vince Carter and Shammond Williams along with Jerry Stackhouse, Jeff McInnis and Rasheed Wallace.  It would be interesting to see that team go against both 2009 and 2005.  In fact they can go ahead and toss Joe Forte and Brendan Haywood on the WCHB team and let 2009 have Brandan Wright to offset not having Davis and Thompson.  Which leads to an interesting question which team do you think would be the best?

Which alumini team would be the best?

  • WCHB: Jamison, Carter, S. Williams, Wallace, Stackhouse, McInnis, Haywood, Forte (83%, 15 Votes)
  • 2005: Felton, May, M. Williams, J. Williams, Manuel, McCants, Q. Thomas, Sanders, Terry (11%, 2 Votes)
  • 2009: Hansbrough, Lawson, Ellington, Green, Frasor, Copeland, Wright (6%, 1 Votes)

Total Voters: 18

Since we are looking at one game, any guesses on how they will divide the teams and who would start? All I can say is, Lawson vs Felton will be something to watch.

I vote WCHB, but I think 2009 would make it close mainly because Haywood would miss at least three dunks that Tyler and Ty would convert on the fast break.

Whatever happened to Byron Sanders, anyway?

If this new rule about the other coach picking a free throw shooter to replace someone was in effect back then, he would have seen a lot of game action!

I ordered my tickets for this and the Citadel game last week.

    WCHB wins hands down IMO.

I’m with you Wilf. WCHB, no contest…

If I voted, it’d be the 2009 team, but, well, that’s the only team I’ve seen play.

Anyone know if this will be broadcasted anywhere? Like on ACC Select or something?

can’t wait to see this one, but even more so to see the one planned for February when any UNC basketball alum can play. frankly, i think if MJ shows up Sept 4, he should get to play.

If MJ is playing the second game I’m definitely there. I’ll scrap the wifey’s Valentines plans in a minute ;>)

  • But the WCHB players have never won a NC! J/K

The WCHB team, no doubt. Old age and treachery ALWAYS overcome youth and skill…

I voted for 2005 because I maintain that that should also be a WCHB team (additions in CAPS):

    Starters-

Felton, McCants, Manuel, May, DWIGHT HOWARD

    Bench-

Jawad, Marvin, JR SMITH, Scott, Noel, Sanders, Terry, Q

FTR, I left LeBron off for two reasons…

    1. I am basing this on the presence of the “1-and-done rule.”

    2. Despite what he has said recently, I still think he would have gone to OSU.

Once again, the 1957 team goes without recognition. Why wasn’t Rosenbluth invited?

According to HBO, it was the 1957 UNC Tar Heels who created ACC basketball. Before that, football was the dominant sport in the ACC.

The 1957 Heels still have the record for most victories in a season without a loss, and I believe the best record in the history of the ACC in league games, going 17-0 in the league and conference tournament, although I would have to check. I think the 1999 Duke team went 17-0 also, but they lost twice out of conference and did not win the national title. They also won the title against a quality opponent who had an excellent pivotman, every bit as good as any in the history of the game.

Frank’s miracle is still unduplicated by any other ACC squad. NC State came closest, going 30-1 and 16-0 (counting the Big Four and ACC tourney) against ACC teams in 1974, but they got thrashed by UCLA in December and did not go undefeated. Although State would win 57 of 58 games in 1973 and 1974, they also did not equal McGuire’s record for most consecutive wins, compiled during 1957 and 1958.

I don’t know why more Carolina fans aren’t aware of these achievements, but hopefully we can talk them up.

  • william,

This game includes active players. There will be a game in February that is open to all former players.

I was kind of tongue-in-cheek about Lennie playing but he may still be decent from five feet in!

As nice as it is to have one game (Alumni or otherwise) planned, it’s always a challenge this time of year to piece together the schedule for the upcoming year. I know this isn’t the best thread for this, but what’s a guy to do?

According to a variety of web sources, usually the other teams’ official announcements, the following non-conference games are slated. Does anyone know of other games?

    11/6 Belmont Abbey (exhibition)
11/9 Alcorn St. (Coaches vs. Cancer)
    ? ? (Coaches vs. Cancer)
11/19 Coaches vs. Cancer @ NYC
11/20 Coaches vs. Cancer @ NYC
    11/23 Gardner-Webb
    12/1 Michigan State
    12/19 @Texas
    12/22 Marshall
    1/4 @Charleston
    ? @Kentucky

    Dec. 19 – Texas (@ Texas Stadium)
    Dec. 22 – Marshall
    Jan. 4 – @ Charleston
    TBA – @ Kentucky
    TBA – Nevada
    TBA – Rutgers

    TBA – Duke
    TBA – @ Duke

That game at Charleston is going to be played in their actual home arena(cap: 5100). Like playing at UCSB last season, the Heels are apparently not afraid to play a mid-major in their gym.
