WP Cumulus Flash tag cloud by Roy Tanck and Luke Morton requires Flash Player 9 or better.

At least someone is winning something…

That someone would be Harrison Barnes, and the something is the 2010 Morgan Wooten Player of the Year. In an entry to his ESPN blog, Christopher Lawlor notes that the award is not only a reward for Barnes’ skill on the court, but also his character off of it:

The future Tar Heel bagged the prestigious honor for his presence on and off the court. When he’s not electrifying crowds in Iowa gyms, Barnes is involved in DECA (marketing, management, entrepreneurship club) and Students Helping Eliminate Poverty and Hunger (SHEPH). He also participated in the 2009 Mid-Iowa Community Action Agency Food Drive, serves as an algebra tutor and leads a weekly Bible study.

There is still no word yet on how Barnes’ is progressing developing a cure for the swine flu or balancing the US budget…  But seriously, it does sound like Barnes  is a terrific kid, on top of being an elite talent, and it will be a lot of fun watching his tenure as a Tar Heel.  More importantly, one does not become involved with entrepreneurial activities if they are uncomfortable being a leader and unwilling to put in the work, both of which are qualities that the Tar Heel nation will welcome with open arms next season.

Congratulations, Mr. Barnes!!

Congratulations to Mr. Barnes! Can’t wait for him to get here. Lets hope turning around Carolina basketball isn’t as difficult as finding a cure for swine flu or balancing the budget… but right now it seems like it might be.

  • makeitWayne22

Mr. Barnes, I can not wait to see ya in the Carolina Blue, he will be a stud on the court, and a huge leader and role model off.

These are the types of kids that make UNC a great program, yes this year has sucked, but we will not be done for long.

  • wildhorses

    Congratulations to Harrison Barnes.

Really disappointed with cracks like, “At least someone is winning something.”

  • ^It was in reference to a previous post noting that for the first time, no one on UNC was named to an All-ACC team. I’m generally pretty careful to be as non-insulting as possible when I post, but I apologize if I failed. I really didn’t think it was out of line.

“Really disappointed with cracks like, “At least someone is winning something.””

Lighten up, so even if a small attempt at humor isn’t beating the drum for school pride it somehow gets taken as negative and is labeled as “disappointing”? The irony is that when people post that the play displayed on the court is “disappointing” then these same people complain about those types of comments being too negative.

I guess if we all accepted disappointment and never discussed items that disappointed us we could have the perfect positive blog environment. Huh? What?

  • Nothing wrong with the headline or the sentiment.

Barnes is a good kid and based on what I have seen so is Marshall. Both of them strike me as natural leaders and will bring some missing elements to the locker room next season.

  • william

Ditto. That comment taking C. Michael to task did not even make sense. C. Michael was indeed making a positive comment.

  • makeitWayne22

question: how come sometimes THF ur posts are in blue, and other times they are not blue. Totally off topic,

and yeah nice zinger, and yet is it not true?

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

Yeah – and how come some of the posts appear in that Jordan Brand 25th anniversary silver (which actually looks more like gray then silver)? Et tu THF? Et tu!?

  • ^^The comments in blue depend on who the author of the post was.

  • nativeheel

I think it is time for all of us to lighten up. This season just is what it is. Time to put it on the back burner for we have every right to look forwrd to next year with the quality recruits that will be arriving. Congradulations to Harrison Barnes, Tarheel on the horizon! Go Heels!!

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

For the record, I was only joking… although I do hope we never ever wear any color besides Carolina Blue again.

  • ncbluesky244

Since I work at Duke (Lord please forgive me), but am a vocal Tar Heel fan, I am getting lots of grief from the local dookies.

I am looking for one of the pictures of the cameron crazies from a couple of years back that showed all their blue painted faces tear streaked after yet another Tar Heel victory on their home court. It was modeled after one of the credit card ads… “priceless’.. Any help out there ?

  • faustus1500

    ncblue,

forget the tears. this one always gets Greg Paulus choked up.

What’s great about this picture is that in the lower left you can see Peyton Manning.

  • Ron

Congrats to Harrison, that’s just one of many awards in store for this young man.

ncbluesky, I don’t have the picture you’re asking about but I have something just as good.

    Enjoy!

  • Harrison Barnes is a unique talent, and I dare say we’ll be singing his praises for some time to come.

Off topic, but something cool in regards to sports blogs: I am following a guy who says he is the first media credentialed micro blogger, and he was tweeting about the Big East tournament courtside today.

It would be great to see Brian get into a press conference or season tix, wouldn’t you think? For what it’s worth, here’s his article: http://www.twitip.com/tweet-your-way-to-press-row/

  • LarryS

Harrison Barnes, averaging 26.9 PPG, is 31 points away from breaking the Iowa state HS career scoring record of Fred Hoiberg, who played at Iowa State and in the NBA. Harrison has up to 3 games to do it, depending on how far his team goes in the state tournament.

From the archives of Most Dubious Achievements in NBA History:

Fred Hoiberg has got to be the Rodney Dangerfield of the NBA. In 2005, he became the first person in NBA history to lead the league in 3 pt. shooting and not be invited to the All-Star Weekend 3 pt. shooting contest.

  • faustus1500

    LarryS,

Fred Hoiberg played at Iowa State. He was nicknamed the “Mayor of Ames.” He also accidently injured Jeff Hornacek when while the later played for Iowa State.

  • LarryS

^Thanks for catching that, Faustus. I have corrected it.

If Harrison breaks Fred’s record, I wonder what nickname the folks in Ames will give Harrison?

  • partsman5521

Only thing that concerns me about Barnes is how long can we keep him here.

  • william

He will stay two years at least.

It will be hard for him to go pro next year if he only gets 9 minutes a game through the end of January….

  • unc steph

I am very excited about Harrison Barnes next year. Hopefully ya’ll won’t rip him to shreds next year when he is on our roster.

  • partsman5521

^^^ 9 minutes a game from the #1 recruit in the land isn’t going to help this team much, if thats all he plays……

  • He will play more than nine mins per game. You act like the way Roy used Henson is the way he has historically used talented freshmen. Ed Davis and Marvin Williams in sixth man roles played more than nine mins per game. Wayne Ellington and Brandan Wright both started as did Ty Lawson later in the season. If you are talented, work hard and pick up the system then you will see the court. Henson was an exception to what is generally the rule with Roy Williams.

  • william

That was a joke. I did say “if”….

Like you said, Roy deserves a mulligan, but if Mr. Barnes did somehow only end up playing nine minutes a game next year, well, that would not be something that bodes well for Coach Williams.

I fully expect Barnes to start, and would not be surprised if Marshall and Bullock do as well. If you have Zeller, Henson, B&B and Marshall out there, you don’t have a lot of experience, but at least it should be a lot of fun to watch with a lot more offensive firepower than what we have seen this year.

  • badbadleroybrown

So, I’m trying to determine what the best way to get to Reynolds Coliseum would be and I thought to myself, the booster club would have that information, sadly they don’t know where it’s located either. I know it’s in central campus and will find parking off Hboro road but this is just sad – follow the link:

    …impressive, most impressive State…

  • carolinablue74

From whatever I read about Bullock, Barnes and Marshall, they are special kids, leaders of their teams and they play to win. The worst thing that can happen next year is to preordain someone like Larry as the leader based solely on his seniority. Sometimes it’s better to let the leader emerge.

  • 52bgJ

bblb–for real? which way are you coming from?

  • rathskellar68

Just find the pasture and park there.

  • rathskellar68

“At Least Someone Is Winning Something…”

To be fair, we should acknowledge that it’s not just Harrison Barnes who is pulling down honors.

For the third straight year, Kyle Singler wins the award for dirtiest ACC player who looks like a choir boy.

Next year, he’ll be out to tie the all-time record held by Christian Laettner.

I know this post is negative, but I hope the Cheerfulness Police will give me a pass, on the theory that it’s still OK to be negative about friggin’ Dook.

  • badbadleroybrown

^^52 & Rath, I have walked near it but I haven’t been to a game there so I’m excited to go. State folks have a right to be angry about a lot of things and one is their athletic department. Copy that link into your browser or click i if you can, the official state website has you driving to North Raleigh almost to Wake Forest, it’s comical.

I’ll be there on Saturday for the Kinston game with my kids to see a small piece of our future in action. Having the game at Reynolds is a big bonus as I hope to get decent seats for the event. We will see. I’ll take a radio just in case there’s some magic to be heard from the ACC tournament.

On the good news side my Wake friend is done with Dino. The FSU game was a killer for him and he was really bitter about the entire season, he thinks thy will hold him for another season at least maybe two. I told him if he’s lucky they can compete with State and GT for a head coach.

Looking forward to working and listening to the tournament on the radio today at least. Shameful as I love tournament time, strange place to be this year.

  • 52bgJ

^^yeah, it should be fun–I thought earlier I might try to go too. that is funny if they’re taking you that route. Reynolds is kinda neat, but the seats are awful-I wouldn’t try a drink and popcorn at the same time ;-) It used to be really cool to walk towards Reynolds and hear the crowd as you approached. They should have tried to renovate it rather than move off campus (Devereux Meadows ballpark too), but hey, it wouldn’t be Raleigh if it wasn’t about sprawl & trashing architectural heritage. I will be very interested to hear your report on Bullock. We used to park at Pullen Park or the Armory & walk to Reynolds but that’ll probably earn you a ticket now. hope you & the kids have a great time.

  • Big Chief

    ^For the Heel –
That was a good article, and it makes me believe that this year is unlikely to be repeated. It’s pretty obvious that even if he did nothing else wrong, he recruited wrong. And I believe that he will go about it differently in the future.

As for Henson, it’s clear he and his family want him to be another Kevin Durant, but he doesn’t have the outside shot yet. I think it would be better for him and the team to have Roy make him play his way into it. He plays at the 4 until he shows he can hit the outside shot. If he can’t beat out Graves at the 3, he doesn’t deserve to play it.

  • Heel To The End

so the article basically has an admission that it was a “miscalculation” to have so many players cahnge position.
and that Henson did indeed WANT to play the 3, and it was part of the recruiting. so that is completely cleared up.

it doesnt answer why the intensity was lacking, or why, as the article states with the blocking out example, that the players either didnt grasp what to do or thought they DID grasp it when they didnt.

  • makeitWayne22

“I’m coming in to compete with my teammates. I want to take it to the next level. It will start this summer because that’s where it all begins. I just want to try and be a leader and help build team unity so that we will all be on the same page.”

    K. Marshall understand that leaders are earned not given

  • Heel To The End

    what, no ACCT thread?

the Big East tourney started on time…uh, ACC? this is why your games are always late. start already!
