Actually there is not much difference between what UNC did last season through the end of December and what they are doing now. There are minor improvements in certain areas such as opposing teams shooting about 1% lower against the Heels. Since both FGA and 3PA are lower along with the percentages it basically means opposing teams are not only shooting less often but shooting worse at the same time. That is likely explained by the increase in opposing teams turnovers by one per game. Opposing teams are rebounding slightly better versus the Heels.
On the offensive side, UNC is shooting the ball slightly better, averaging about a point more per game and illustrating greater unselfishness with three more assists per game than last season. The two main concerns are the fact UNC is rebounding worse than a year ago. The Heels are averaging 2.5 fewer rebounds than a year ago. The Heels are also fouling more often which is something Roy expressed concern about after the Nevada game.
Stats do not tell the whole story, but as Roy said they give you information. I will keep tracking them to see how they progress as the season goes.
Not so much noteworthy for what is a no-brainer but for the fact it is being asked of the players at this point.
Here is what Hansbrough said today on the topic:
“We’ll see what happens; I want to take it game by game, but I think if you ask every team I’ve every played on, it would be great to go undefeated’’
I am fairly sure the undefeated talk will pick up steam should the Heels win in Winston-Salem. After that the biggest challenge left is Duke twice and a handful of other road games which really should not be an issue. For now this is still just talk.
The other major item out of the Friday press conference was a lengthy discussion of the Heels defense which was seen as much improved to start the season but took a slight slide backwards in the games following the exam break. So all of the focus has been on the defense since there is really nothing much else to complain about. Sure Wayne Ellingotn could be shooting better and the rebounding is a little off, other than that everything else seems to be working. That leaves the defense and the general consensus is the issues are related more to focus and effort than anything else. Getting BC and Tyrese Rice in town this Sunday will be a good test on both ends of the court.

For those of us who have kids and will be home I can think of nothing better than ringing in the New Year with the Tar Heels on TV.
Another action packed game which saw UNC run up another double digit lead and cruise home.

Basketball takes center stage.
Here is video of the RCA Dome in Indianapolis being demolished. Why is this important? Because this building served as the site of two of UNC’s more painful Final Four losses in 1991 and 1997. The 1991 Final Four game versus Kansas included the ejection of Dean Smith. In 1997 you had Shammond Williams completely forgetting how to shoot the basketball against Arizona.
And Tar Heel Blue has the right idea about who is next on the list:
We’re not threatening anything, but let’s put it this way: Alamo Dome, you’re on notice.
