Butch Davis on the QB situation.

On T.J. Yates:
“Our trainers felt like, based on where he was physically, that it would be okay for him to come back on a limited basis to work himself into some drills that were not team-[oriented] and there was no way that he was going to be put in a situation to have to scramble and run around.

“So basically what it was is he had a chance to come and do some individual drills yesterday, throw some individual routes one-on-one with the receivers and the defensive backs and then he was able to participate a little bit in some 7-on-7… He’ll do that this week and we’ll judge how he handles it this week to determine whether or not he takes the step next week that would allow him maybe to participate, but he’s still a ways away.”

Once Yates is healthy, how does the quarterback situation play out?
“Well, certainly, you have no idea when and if that healthy day is going to be. Is it two weeks from now? Is it four weeks from now? Certainly Cam [Sexton], right now, is playing extremely well.

“I think what it does is it certainly gives us two quarterbacks that our team has confidence to play, and certainly the way that Cam is playing, barring any unforeseen injury, Cam would continue to be the guy. As I’ve told the players all along, since I took the job, the guy that gives us the best chance to win on Saturday, regardless of the position, is the guy that we’re going to play.”

I tend to agree with Ken Tysiac on this, though I am confused as to why Tysiac posted this because I thought he was assigned to cover NC State football. I guess there is only so long you can stare at a train wreck before it makes you eyes bleed. Either that or it was Robbi Pickeral’s day off.

Anyway.

The crux of this matter really rest on when TJ Yates is actually healthy enough to play and then you figure out if you are going to pull Cam Sexton or not.  If I were to try and parse this, which is a painful experience because Butch Davis has a PhD in coachpeak with a minor in bluffing the media, I would state it like this:

• We have no idea when Yates will be healthy enough to play

• Sexton is doing a good job for us and will continue to play as long as that is the case.

• However if Sexton gets sacked and gets up thinking it is 2006 again we can fall back on Yates

• I really don’t give a crap about who does what as long as they can win a football game

• I despise you people with every fiber of my being.

Okay, I made that last one up.

I think Sexton is the guy unless he screws up in which case Yates, if healthy, will be the guy.  Or he is going to use the hot hand whoever that might be.  This is also a great position to be in since most teams have a drop off from one QB to the next.  If Yates returns to form, that will not be the case at UNC.
