That’s real Tar Heel basketball your smell.
UNC will play its lone exhibition game of the 2011-12 season tonight taking on UNC Pembroke in the Smith Center. While exhibitions are notorious for not revealing anything of value about the team it will be a chance to see the Tar Heels take the court for the first time this season even if it comes against a clearly overmatched opponent.
While everything that happens in this game will require the grain of salt provision attached to it there are some things to look out for. Since the offense was so inconsistent last season, the progress of varies individuals in terms of their respective offensive games will be interesting to watch, even in a game like this. Harrison Barnes, for example, needed to improve his ball handling and ability to score in traffic as well as his perimeter shot. Both John Henson and Dexter Strickland needed to refine their shots to be more effective. Everyone will be anxious to see the freshmen for the first time, especially P.J. Hairston who, along with Reggie Bullock, will be asked to shoot threes and make them on a fairly consistent basis.
Overall some hiccups and rust will be expected but probably fewer than you might see with a less experienced team. Interestingly enough the last time UNC played UNCP was in the exhibition game for the 2008-09 season. The Heels won 102-62 and finished the season as national champions. UNC is starting this season the same way, let hope it ends in similar fashion as well.

Also, I grew up in Charlotte, and I have always heard Pembroke pronounced “Pembrook.” These commentators are driving me crazy.

Barnes was 2 for 8 tonight with his first field goal coming in the second half. Hairston was awesome. So far Carolina looks pretty good. November 11th can’t come here soon enough.
