Third Time’s the Charm: Hatchell Gets 600th at UNC

The Carolina men’s basketball team wasn’t the only team to get back on track in Blacksburg on Thursday night.

UNC’s women’s team shook off the worst loss in program history (a 51-point beatdown at the hands of UConn) and an upset loss last week to Clemson to claim a 56-37 win over the Hokies and give Tar Heel coach Sylvia Hatchell her 600th win at  Carolina.

Hatchell is now 872-308 in her career, and 600-228 at UNC. Only two other coaches - Debbie Ryan at Virginia and Kay Yow at NC State - have won 600 or more games at an ACC school.

I’m sure many Carolina fans would be surprised to know Hatchell is the 4th all-time winningest basketball coach in women’s Division I history, trailing only Rutgers’ C. Vivian Stringer, legendary Texas coach Jody Conradt, and the standard-bearer of women’s hoops, Pat Summitt of Tennessee. Both Stringer and Hatchell should reach the 900-win plateau next season and pass Conradt to vault into the top three.

The legacy of basketball coaches at UNC is simply beyond compare - from Frank McGuire to Dean Smith to Sylvia Hatchell to Roy Williams. Those four coaches have combined for nearly 3,000 career wins.  Congratulations to Coach Hatchell and the Carolina women.

    Congrats to Coach Hatchell!

She’s had a tough year, with so many injuries at times that she had only six players. She’s a true Hall of Famer.
