make 8-pt a game Gibson and 10-pt a game James TRY and beat you. guarantee that wont happen.

  • Moustache

I believe telling the truth beats rose-colored Polyanna any day, John “deepenwide” Henson.

Not sure why so many think that any criticism of the team’s play — which is so far BELOW potential, mainly due to mental issues — is a Manichean, either/or proposition.

Just because some of us point out glaring problems doesn’t mean that they aren’t true.

THF, NOBODY here is expecting “perfection”…far from it. I think we with critiques are expecting a modicum of discipline and attentiveness from the players to regularly play within a reasonable distance of their potential a reasonable amount of the time. That’s not expecting “perfection”, and it’s a strawman to say that those with whom you disagree are espousing such a view just because we offer criticism, and pretty obvious criticism at that.

Let’s hope the second half is marked by more discipline, stronger defense, and no injuries.

  • fumble on the field!!!!!!!

  • Andy In Omaha

Just might be one of those games when nothing goes right…it would make it easier if the effort was there.

  • scl11

Wow even dickie v says unc is lazy, we should shut down his comments too, how dare he

  • Andy In Omaha

Just freaking try….I don’t know why, after playing together for a few months, there’s a lack if effort and no one is holding each other accountable.

  • tonyboi08

Run a play for Barnes to get him going everybody else besides Zeller is standing still

  • scl11

UNLV again get down and panic, bunch of front-runners

  • faustus1500

Sorry THF but this is embarrassing. We do not know what the result of the season will be, what we do know is how they are playing currently. Currently, they are playing without any energy while Florida State is playing out their minds. If UNC loses this game which is entirely likely, it could be the wake up call UNC needs or it could show what everyone has been screaming about what is wrong with this team.

  • Moustache

at this point, they’d be better off losing by 40 and learning how awful it feels (I would hope) than clawing back in and thinking that this sort of play/attention/discipline/apathy is acceptable.

  • rathskellar68

There’ a good deal wrong with the way Barnes is playing, and the free throw shooting is worse than awful, but the even more fundamental problem is that there are games when the other side hits everything, and you hit nothing. That’s what’s happening now, and I think what that produces is not our players being lazy but somewhat disspirited.

  • scl11

Lottery picks don’t miss as many layups as HB does

  • Heel To The End

a double down on James, who has FOUR pts, and leave a guard at the 3-pt line, open by 10 feet.
    WHY.
in what world does Zeller or Henson need that help?
we’re just lucky he didnt take the wide open shot.

  • Andy In Omaha

Man….if I didn’t have to leave for my kid’s game in a half hour, my friend Jack Daniels would see quite a few visits from me.

  • tonyboi08

Is Barnes still sick he has no touch on his shot

  • faustus1500

I think UNC started the game lazy. That is what is really hurting them now. They need to come out at the beginning of games ready to play. There is no reason….no reason why Luke Loucks and Deividas Dulkys should start out so red hot.

  • daveinnnyc

Zero heart from this team. Perhaps Henson should practice free throws before the game rather than play around with Vitale before the game.

    And Zeller is down.

  • tonyboi08

    Nooooooo

  • Andy In Omaha

Marshall has zero confidence in Barnes……

  • Sloppy inbound straight to the open corner shot… Dang!!!!

  • scl11

if this result isn’t do to a lack of effort then this team has no shot to win it all

  • faustus1500

This team is not playing like an NCAA team right now.

  • Heel To The End

game lost before the first tv timeout. thats what happens when you let a team think it can win.

  • tonyboi08

    Standing still on inbound passes

  • Andy In Omaha

No one excuses what Henson did, but I didn’t see a call against FSU when one of their thugs shoved him to the ground earlier.

  • Heel To The End

    “wide open”
    drink!

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

They weren’t ready to compete today. Take the starters out. Take them out now. Let them sit on the bench and listen to the inevitable (and well deserved) chants of “overrated” for the rest of the game. Maybe it will teach them a lesson.

  • Andy In Omaha

    Lack of heart….just freaking quit.

  • tonyboi08

Marshall is killing me no defense sloppy passes and bad shooting

  • scl11

What a joke, Gatech game from last year, can’t blame SOC this time

  • william

Frontrunners is a nicer characterization than “bully” team, but let’s see how they play after getting a proverbial bloody nose….

  • gso_tarheel

THF - i understand you see fans overreact and grumble too mich all the time, but this is a littke different. I wonder what Roy’s comments are about his team right now? There is no justification for this. These games don’t happen evey year. Also, KY’s tough games on the road this week ended in Wins. Just call it like it is - they did not show up today. It is an embarrassment, regardless what this team does from hear on out.

  • nick

24-6 run to begin the second half of a game we’re already down?

I don’t post much, THF, and rarely join the uh, chorus of negativity.

But this is an utterly damning result.

I’m happy to stipulate that character, toughness, pride, call it what you will, is not the only factor determining the strength of a basketball team; even that it’s not the most important factor-talent is, of course.

    But it’s a factor.

Take the starters out now, Roy, for the rest of the game.

Extreme situations call for extreme measures.

  • william

    I don’t know if we can score 26 points in 12 minutes….

  • Andy In Omaha

So, is this a result of coaching? How can this team look this bad today?

  • faustus1500

WTF?!!! THAT GOLLUM IS GETTING AWAY WITH A MOVING SCREEN!!!!

  • tonyboi08

Hairston shot has gone to scraps

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

Some performances are so bad there is no such thing as an over reaction.

  • Moustache

A close second in the disappointment by the absolute bovine excrement effort out there today is the fact that my laptop batter is dying, which means that I’m now about to be forced to turn on the radio and listen to Jones Angell try and polish this turd…and you all think people on this board are pollyannas…

I do swear, if ANY one of these sandbaggers says anything in the post-game about how FSU just came out with more effort and intensity, as though it were a mystery or a passive thing inexplicably happening to them, I may drive to RDU to meet the plane just so I can yell at him personally. Dammit.

Finally: anybody still think my commentary during the BC game was too harsh or overwrought? You’re welcome.

battery down to 2%…enjoy the stellar effort by our guys for the rest of the way. Should be a joy.

  • faustus1500

    “I don’t know if we can score 26 points in 12 minutes….”

I don’t know they they can score 10 points in 12 minutes.

  • Andy In Omaha

I don’t think Roy had the boys ready today….this seems like a Butch Davis prep job to me.

  • rathskellar68

I honestly did not think something like this could happen to a team with our pride and maturity.

    My bad.

Florida State is better than we are. You just can’t deny what your eyes are seeing. But we shouldn’t be losing like this even to a better team.

We’ll drop ten slots in the polls, and all ten will have been earned.

  • faustus1500

I am sorry guys….I know you guys do not want to hear this, but I really don’t think this team will be fighting for a National Title. Sure UNC lost to BC in 2009, but lets face it no National Title contender has lost by 30 to an unranked team.

If this team doesn’t have enough fight to bring it down to under 20. I don’t know what else to say.

  • scl11

Worse game of Roy Williams era

  • marcus62660

Oh good….our impenetrable full court press has appeared.

  • scl11

Was wake ranked we they beat the 1993 team by 30?

  • Moustache

    is Z hurt too?

the only player showing even an ounce of guts today goes down?

That’s called adding injury to insult.

These lazy prima donnas can walk back to CH.

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

A loss like this one is a pretty good indication that a team doesn’t have what it takes to win it all. I’m guessing either Syracuse or Kentucky will win it this year. They don’t stop trying.

It would be nice if we make it the Final 4, but even that might be expecting too much.

  • scl11

    Barnes can’t guard

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

I wouldn’t be surprised if Wake was ranked. They had Rogers and Childress that year and were pretty good.

  • Andy In Omaha

I’m a firm believer that you have nights where nothing you put up falls, and everything the other team puts up goes in. But we were outhustled, outplayed, AND outcoached. This was a football effort today.

  • Heel To The End

thank GOODNESS that Gibson, James and Kreft, combined 11 pts and 3 turnovers forced, didnt beat us.
that doubling down really paid off. check that box off.
they were probably all gonna torch us for 20 per.

  • scl11

And marshall still can’t shoot with his right, what did he work on over the summer

  • 7YrsBlue

Isn’t it part of the coaches job to motivate the players so that they don’t come out looking like this. Hey, this isn’t a cupcake we’re playing. So I don’t want to hear how they just didn’t come out with any intensity and that they’ver learned a valuable lesson crap.

  • rathskellar68

One enduring problem from this game is that, henceforth, no team will fear us, and every team will think, with justification, that we can be had.

The old bromide is that you put it behind you and move on, but the old bromide won’t work this time.

  • william

That 1993 Wake game was a lot different. They hit like 6 three’s in a row in the second half to turn a close game into a laugher. This was just bad play from the beginning.

  • Heel To The End

    you would think, 7yrs.
that after SIX WEEKS at home, there would be a very very high
effort made to get the intensity level up. maybe at a level higher than you really even want. make some early fouls, whatever.

  • william

    Ya se acabo.

  • tonyboi08

See Fsu gets screen after screen on Barnes t free dulky we set no screens for Barnes to get free

  • Heel To The End

teams havent really feared us for some time, rath.
they know theyre gonna get open looks. thats a given. thats
    the baseline.

  • Andy In Omaha

Killer instinct….it would be nice to have that. I hope we get these thugs at home.

  • scl11

Sorry but this might be the worse performace in UNC history, this team just doesn’t care

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

I have a bad feeling FSU is going to score more points against us then they do in any of their other games this year. What a shame.

  • Heel To The End

we do not play FSU again. unless its in the ACCt.

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

This must be how Clemson fans felt when they watched the Orange Bowl…

  • marcus62660

This is nothing more than a very well deserved, humiliating ass-kicking. Who knows where this team goes from here? When you display this kind of Jekyll and Hyde personality, there is no way to gauge progress or regress. I believe they have more games like this in them.

  • faustus1500

I would be shocked in Wake Forest wasn’t ranked in 1993. That was a very good team. They were a No. 5 seed.

  • 7YrsBlue

Faustus, I agree. This team is not likely to be a contender for the NT if they can show up like this. Not to mention when one of your primary front court players can’t hit a free-throw and there is no 3 pt defense, it makes opposing strategy very easy.

  • scl11

Dulkys career high bc guarded by barnes

  • faustus1500

Dulkys is playing like Brandon Paul from this week.

  • Heel To The End

double digit 3s surrendered. probably will be another 25+ 3pt attempts surrendered.
    copyright, UNC Basketball.

oh, and 7yrs…how did they not CORRECT the intensity at halftime?
it was a manageable, survivable 8 pt lead.

  • faustus1500

I used to be in the Harrison Barnes camp. I am sorry. He shouldn’t be in the National Player of the Year discussion anymore.

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

Va Tech fan’s can’t wait! They’re already practicing their court storming. Well, not really, after this game folks will just yawn if they beat us.

  • marcus62660

faustus…when was Barnes ever in that discussion? Did I miss something?

  • rathskellar68

I will be interested to see what the experts, including (in my view) THF, Doc and C.Michael make of this, and, in particular, whether there is a specific explanation for what happened.

I just doubt a team that went in 15-2, won some tough games, battled Kentucky effectively to a draw, doesn’t have pride or desire. I just don’t believe it.

All my experience in life tells me that events are not random or just mysterious. They have a cause. Thus I believe there is a specific cause, or specific causes, for what we have seen today. I’m just not buying the uncurious bromides that, “It was an off day” or “They have no heart.” Something beyond, and different from, those catch-all’s has to be behind this. Can anyone give me a hint as to what it might be?

  • faustus1500

Dulkys simply has been making shots that has been given to him. BC had a lot of good looks in Chapel Hill. They just couldn’t hit them.

  • gso_tarheel

This is like the KU final four game, except FSU is not close to KU that year. And we actually made a furious comeback in that game. Hasn’t there been a question about this team’s intensity? UNC fans are so negative….

  • marcus62660

Roy Williams continues to play starters….what a disgrace.

  • Thrawnyboy

I know the game isn’t over, I just can’t watch any more.

  • faustus1500

    Marcus,

    Barnes is a Naismith Finalist.

  • Heel To The End

850, i just hope we contain the juggernaut VT frontline, that averages a combined 23 pts. *eyeroll*

  • faustus1500

Last time UNC lost by 30, at Duke in 2010. Sigh. That says it all.

  • marcus62660

faustus…that’s just friggin funny. Barnes probably needs to start with “player of the game” a few times first.

  • faustus1500

    Roy pulls his players early.

  • faustus1500

Leonard Hamilton suggests that UNC go ahead and go to the locker room.

  • What’s with the “database errors”?

  • gso_tarheel

Did that just happen? That was the feeling of the whole year of 2010 all wrapped up in a single game.

  • faustus1500

Dulkys averaged under four points per game in his previous four games.

  • faustus1500

    No GSO,

That was the 2002 season wrapped up into a single game. The only 30 point loss Carolina had in 2010 was in Durham,

  • UNCfansince76

This game was the ugliest game I have seen Carolina play in my entire life. At least the team in 2010 showed some effort at the end v.s. dook. 2008 Against kansas, that squad got slammed and kicked in the mouth… but they crawled back in the 2nd half. This one was ugly from start to finish… I know it was the first road conference game but there is no EXCUSE WHAT SO EVER.

All in all… this one stings…

    Go HEELS!

  • BuonRotto

Duke loss to end 2010 season was worse. They truly gave up in that one. Here, they panicked and couldn’t figure out how to be productive. Still the only positive was that Zeller was productive the whole game.

I do not mean this to single out Marshall or make him a scapegoat, but he is the floor general, and his demeanor resonates with the team. I think that has been the difference this year versus last year. Last year, he was Mr. Cool when they chipped away. This year, he’s forcing stuff and so is everyone else. Barnes has also lacked that spark this year.

    Hopefully they find it again.

  • BuonRotto

One more thing: they were frustrated and down on themselves. They did not quit, they didn’t know how to be focused and productive with their effort. Anyone who thinks they didn’t show effort needs to understand the difference between not playing well and not trying. Huge difference. I saw players trying too hard to score 5 points at a time, not guys who checked out. Oh, and Dick Vitale is clueless.

  • newtonbass

    BuonRotto
Did not check out??? Did you watch the same game. They let one guy stand outside an make 8 undefended 3 pointers and have a career day. No loose balls. Ran very little offense. NO defensive intensity at all.
Only Zeller played hard and he was playing against three guys in the paint all day. All of them looked like walk-ons.
They checked out with effort. No pride in the uniform.
    BTW
Why does Barnes always look so tired? He is always breathing heavy so early in games with hands on knees. Maybe they should check him medically. I’m serious. Always looks out of shape.

  • thewizard50

    Rath -

Roy is recruiting too many “Boy Scouts” and to few “players.” They are not MEAN enough. So what if some of them stay only one year? The “players” who stick around will richly benefit from the experience.

Harrison Barnes could not last twelve weeks at Parris Island. While I hate it, look for two losses to Dook and one to Virginia.

I really thought that this team had genuine chemistry - I was dead wrong!

  • deepenwide

We had a terrible game but one game doesn’t make for a terrible year. You guys stay off the bandwagon when we cut down the nets in New Orleans. Every one of you.

  • BuonRotto

Wizard: Henson acted a bit like what you wanted, but I don’t think it helped them.

  • chapelhillfan

Love it when a team takes a collective dump on the court and then some people criticize fans for getting upset. Makes perfect sense.

  • Cristoball

I know Im late with this comment, but that game was some BS! The Heels were beat up and harrased the entire game and the refs did nothing but play to the favor of the home team…I think UNC needs to recruit a couple bruisers to get on the court and play dirty. Throw an elbow, or an occasional spear thrust to the throat! Maybe that will get the respect that UNC deserves as an elite team…Until then I hope the team recovers quickly from this disaster and play tough for the rest of the season…
