The ACC/Big Ten Challenge: Night #3

Boston College 65 Michigan State 58

BC gets a nice on a huge double-double from Jared Dudley with 30 points and 10 rebounds.

Virginia Tech 69 Iowa 65

VT showed up and knocked off Iowa proving themselves to be one of the confusing teams in the ACC to get a handle on so far.

Purdue 61 Virginia 59

Virginia loses for the first time this season. J.R.Reynolds had a woeful shooting night despite collecting nine rebounds and dishing out five assists. Sean Singletary and Mamadi Diane had 17 and 21 respectively

North Carolina 98 Ohio State 89

Big win for UNC. OSU is a very talented team and the Tar Heels look like they are figuring some of it out.

Clemson 90 Minnesota 68

I did not see this one coming. Minnesota must be really horrible because I still think Clemson is bottom tier in the ACC but heck if they did not rip Minnesota a new one in that game.

ACC Wins Challenge 8-3

Air Force 94 Wake Forest 58

The Falcons shredded the Demon Deacons and won by 36. Good thing for Wake everyone will be talking about UNC-OSU.

UNC 98 Ohio State 89

First off, let’s deal with the ugly. UNC continues to struggle on defense giving up too many three pointers and allowing dribble penetration all the way to the hoop for easy layups. The Tar Heels continue to play timid and were largely out hustled in the first half as well as allowing OSU to be the aggressors. OSU shot the ball extremely well from beyond the arc in the first half and while some of that was flat out bad defense, the Buckeye shooters also hit some fairly long shots which were difficult to defend. By and large the first half was another example of UNC not bringing the intensity when they are equipped with the depth to bring it for forty minutes.

Ohio State at UNC: LIVE BLOG

I have one warning about a live blog. I am usually intensely into a game of this nature which involves outward acts of destruction on unsuspecting inanimate objects so just know that this live blog could be halted if the game gets to a point where I am unable to form coherent thoughts using the keyboard. This game should be a good one, so away we go after the jump.

Ohio State at UNC

What: ACC/Big Ten Challenge
Where: Dean Smith Center, Chapel Hill, NC

When: November 29th, 9:00 PM
TV: ESPN
Records: UNC 4-1, Ohio State, 6-0

This game is obviously a huge game and a giant test for two teams filled with a lot of very talented and young players. The atmosphere inside the Dean Dome will be electric and the only downside is that super frosh Greg Oden for Ohio State is out until January with a wrist injury. This still going to be a great game and I think UNC, which has been tested more so far than the Buckeyes, has a chance to pull off a huge win and take a step towards the expectations laid on them in the preseason. The combination of Tyler Hansbrough and Brandan Wright will be key as well as if UNC can play some decent man-to-man and perimeter defense on an OSU team that can shoot lights out from beyond the arc.

At any rate I am looking forward to it and given the hype surrounding it I will be live blogging beginning at 9 PM.

UNC 92 OSU 88

ACC/Big Ten Challenge: Night #2

Maryland 72 Illinois 66

This is a huge win for Maryland playing a good team in a truly hostile environment. Maryland is now 8-0 and looking like they should have been picked fourth in the ACC.

Wisconsin 81 Florida State 66

The Big 10 snags their first win of the challenge. It is readily apparent that no one knows that to make of Florida State at this point.

Georgia Tech 77 Penn State 73

Penn State is not a good team. They lost to Stony Brook by eight. It is a little unclear by the Yellow Jackets struggled with the Nittany Lions. It may be a simple holdover from the thorough beating UCLA put on them in Maui.

Duke 54 Indiana 51

Let me just say that Kelvin Sampson is a horrible coach. Indiana had numerous opportunities to tie or take the lead and his players seem either lost out there or unaware of the game situation. I have no idea what to make of Duke at this point other than they are inexperienced and not exceptionally deep. The need for serious development cannot be underscored.

Northwestern 61 Miami 59

The Canes had a chance to tie or win this game at the end but could not get a good shot off. I think the chances that Miami will be last in the ACC is pretty good at this point.

ACC Leads 4-2

Where Have All The Wolfpack Fans Gone?

Last night when I was perusing the box score from the NC State-Michigan I noticed one very interesting stat. It was the attendance which was listed as 13,135 at the RBC Center which seats somewhere in the neighborhood of 18,000. Now far be it for me to call NC State fans out but I am wondering why the attendance at Wolfpack basketball games is not close to capacity? Especially when you consider this was a nationally televised game in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.

What is intriguing about the attendance numbers is that some portions of Wolfpack nation have made a lot of hay over UNC’s poor attendance of football games. We have heard how great NC State fans are at football games while UNC fans are apathetic and do not care. Well, it would seem the same is true of NC State fans in basketball. Also, last April during the coaching search, many Wolfpack fans argued vehemently that NC State was a destination school for basketball coaches and could be a perenniel basketball power. On top of that during the last seven months Pack fans have expressed so much excitement about Sidney Lowe and the fact NC State would be running a better brand of basketball on the court. So excuse me if I am a little confused as to why NC State fans are not showing up for the games? If you are out there saying your basketball program should be top notch and excited that Sidney Lowe has replaced Herb Sendek, then I would think you would do the same thing you do in football and show up for the games. And the opponent is not an excuse. UNC had 19,000+ for a Sunday afternoon game versus Gardner Webb which is near Smith Center capacity. However, NC State has an ESPN2 game against Michigan as part of a major early season event and the RBC Center has 5000 empty seats.

In my opinion, if NC State wants to be a major player as a basketball power then the fan base needs to show up, bring in money to the program through ticket sales and create a serious basketball atmosphere. Otherwise all of the weeping and gnashing of teeth we heard over Herb Sendek and the grand talk of having a top program is just that. Talk.

And yes, come next fall if Kenan Stadium has several thousand empty seats despite the presence of Butch Davis, then feel free to blast away at me.

It’s Pronounced “hands-BRO”

I was watching a preview of the UNC-Ohio State game on ESPN last night and Digger Phelps referred to Tyler Hansbrough as Tyler Hansborough, as in, rhymes with Hillsborough. This is the second ESPN analyst to mispronounce his name inside of a week. Steve Lavin did it repeatedly during the Gonzaga game. I am probably making much ado about nothing but I have three issues here.

1. UNC releases a pronunciation guide with the roster and the game notes so there is no excuse not to know how to pronounce his name. In fact even the strength and conditioning coach has his name on the pronunciation guide just in case someone might want to say it during the broadcast.

2. Digger Phelps, Steve Lavin and anyone else at ESPN are getting paid entirely too much money not to get the freaking names of the players right, especially one that is preseason ACC and national player of the year according to various people. This might be excusable if you were talking about the starting forward at Weber State but not someone as recognizable as Hansbrough. Actually, no it is not excusable even for the Weber State guy because outside of a random slip they should pronounce the names correctly on the air, for no other reason than it is their job.

3. Forgive me for pointing out the obvious here, but is there something difficult about his name that makes it hard to pronounce? It is pronounced the way it looks. There is no “o” between the “b” and the “r” in the middle. The problem is they just look at the name and assume it is spelled “Hansborough” and not “Hansbrough”

Of course the funny thing is that after Digger got done calling him “Hansborough” Stacey Dales chimed in and pronounced it correctly. So, in an effort to be somewhat petty about this, until I hear these two individuals pronounce Hansbrough’s name correctly, I will spell their names wrong when I refer to them on this blog.

Digger Felps and Steve Laving? You are on notice.

ACC/Big Ten Challenge: Night #1

NC State 74 Michigan 67

It was really never that close. NC State led by 7 at the half and at one point led by 21 in the second half. This all in spite of the fact senior point guard Engin Atsur was lost for the game six minutes into with a hamstring injury. Ben McCauley, who looked very good at center for the Pack had 19 points. Brandon Costner had 17 points and 11 rebounds. It was a good win for NC State, although Michigan only beat Davidson by 10 points so it remains to be seen if beating the Wolverines is much better than beating Wofford.

ACC Leads 1-0

Tuesday’s Games

#19 Maryland at Illinois, 7:00 PM, ESPN
Florida State at #13 Wisconsin, 7:30 PM, ESPN2
Penn State at #24 Georgia Tech, 8:00 PM, ESPNU
Indiana at #10 Duke, 9:00 PM, ESPN
Miami at Northwestern, 9:30 PM ESPN2

The Butch Davis Press Conference

The Butch Davis era has officially begun.

With great fanfare and a big media push UNC introduced Butch Davis as the head football coach of the Tar Heels on Monday. For the most part it was your standard dog and pony show press conference though I do think Davis is particularly effective in handling the media. Then again he has been on TV for the last year and a half so I would hope he could handle that part of the job. Here are some quotes from the Inside Carolina transcript:

The answer to the last question first… to me the definition of a Tar Heel is a winner.

It’s a process. A lot of it is laying a foundation, and a lot of that foundation is – as I told the players earlier today – how quickly do we get to know each other? I want to know actually everything about them. I want to know their moms and dads, their aspirations, their goals, what their majoring in, their girlfriends, because the quicker we can close that gap, the quicker we’ll put ourselves in a position. I promised them every single day that I come to work here that we’re going to do everything humanly possible to make our football team better every single day. We’re not going to put any kind of timeline on it, but I promised them we will be working every single day to be the best that we can be.

I think that all of this is a process. There is pressure to perform and to win, but on the same token, it will take time. There is no magic formula. There’s going to be a lot of hard work by the student-athletes that are here right now. There’s going to be a lot of action with the players we’re recruiting right now, to bring those players in that have the goals and visions that we have, and help us create an environment that breeds success – where winning is something that we cherish. It won’t happen instantaneously, but it’s something we’re going to strive for every single day.

I want to score more than the other team every single Saturday. Here’s what I would love when people come to Kenan Stadium: I want them to see a fast, athletic football team, but more importantly, I want them to see a smart football team and a well-disciplined football team. I want us to be an aggressive team – always on the attack in all three phases. No one dictates to us, we dictate to them. Our style of offense is going to be wide open. Just look at the track record, I was extraordinarily fortunate at Miami with Edgerrin James, Clinton Portis and Willis McGahee and a whole rack of great running backs and great wide receivers. We were explosive scoring 35 and 40 points. Defensively, we want a fast, aggressive and attacking defense. People at North Carolina are going to find out real soon that maybe the greatest passion I’ve got is special teams. I think it’s the deciding factor in winning national championships. With exception of the quarterbacks, there are no prima donnas. Everybody will contribute to try and win the game on special teams.

First of all, the “a Tar Heel is a winner” line was an obvious attempt to sell himself to the crowd if not a little cheesy. Secondly, the tone he set with expectations was on the mark. It will be a process and I very much like the fact that he said there would be no timeline. I also thought his remarks concerning his coaching style gave the fanbase plenty to be excited about. Davis wants a “smart” and “well-disciplined football team” as well as one that attacks. The early favorite for best quote of the press conference has to be: “No one dictates to us, we dictate to them.” If he is able to instill that mentality into the players, UNC will play with a newfound fire. Apparently Davis also has a passion for special teams which he believes is crucial to turning the tide in games and championship seasons. Davis said the defense would be fast and aggressive which is music to the ears of fans who have dealt with quite the opposite for nine years.

Here are a few other notes on the big day at UNC:

  • Along with the press conference, Davis was making the rounds on the radio shows. He interviewed with Adam Gold on 850 the Buzz and Mark Packer on Primetime with the Packman. Davis also sat with Adam Lucas to discuss his new job.
  • Davis said in his interview with Gold that he had finished up his work with the NFL Network and would start work immediately
  • Apparently Davis has passed the NCAA compliance exam since he said he had made one recruiting call Sunday night. The presumption is that call was to Mike Paulus who also will be receiving a visit from the new coach later this week.
  • The details of Davis’ contract was made known. He will be paid in the neighborhood of $1.7 million annually with most of that being supplemented by various sources. The length of the contract is seven years which is an interesting duration and may be indicative of a desire on the part of Davis to stay at least five years. There are also retention bonuses built-in which can be collected after the fifth season and a$2 million buyout should he leave before the end of the deal.
  • Part of the media blitz included a video Davis made to encourage season ticket sales that was available for viewing online.
  • Davis still has yet to hire a staff which is contrary to an earlier report we had that he was hiring his staff. He indicated to Gold he wanted to be sure he got the right people.

So that’s it. I think Davis brings the excitement back to UNC football and it will be interesting to see the Heels play next season under the new coach. Obviously the nature of such press conferences is to be a PR event first and foremost even if it comes off as mostly fluff and a lot of saying the right things to make the fans/administration happy. When September 1, 2007 rolls around the proof will be in pudding. Davis has the reputation as a big time winner and that is what people will expect. Hopefully UNC is looking at a coach who is successful in every part of the job, including winning on the field.
