The reasons are…well…interesting.

Just a quick note. The proprietor who runs the excellent college football blog The Wizard of Odds has launched a new college basketball blog as well called The March To Madness. Be sure to check it out.
Roy Williams was on 850 with Adam Gold and Joe Ovies this morning. He talks about various topics we have heard and will hear from now until the season begins such as expectations. I hit some highlights below the jump.
If anything I am thrilled to even be having the conversation.
ACC Now has a weekly contest where a guest picker goes against J.P. Giglio and Caulton Tudor in predicting the outcomes of six games. This week I was tapped to offer my picks. You can find the post here.
Thanks to Giglio for including me.
RALEIGH(THF)-In a surprise move on Wednesday, Governor Mike Easley tapped 850 the Buzz radio personality and blogger Joe Ovies for the newly created position, Director of Fan Base Animosity. Governor Easley created the new cabinet level post by executive order on Wednesday, citing the state’s need to ensure the rivalries between local college fan bases remain strong.
“Our local college teams are a source of great entertainment for North Carolina citizens and the fires of hatred which exist between the fans of these teams must remain strong,” said Easley, “With the weakened state of the athletic department at NC State, we need to be sure that feelings of sympathy do not creep into the hearts of ECU, UNC and Duke fans. I firmly believe Mr Ovies can effectively prevent this from happening.”
Along with his duties as chief enforcer of the local rivalries, Ovies will also be using his acerbic wit to take critical shots at the prominent coaches and players to stir the passions of the respective fan bases further. Easley said that having fans in North Carolina frothing at the mouth over their respective schools will lead to increases sales for local business specializing in team paraphernalia as well as an uptick in business for sports bars and ticket sales for home games.
“We firmly believe if we can get people angry and passionate about their teams they will spend money like there is no tomorrow. Mr Ovies has clearly shown a talent in arousing these kind of passions and should meet the Governor’s goals fairly handily.” said a spokesman for Governor Easley’s office.
Critics of the new post call it a waste of state resources and say such things are best left in the private sector. Some lawmakers in the General Assembly also express misgivings that the new appointed director will be unduly critical of one school over another. When asked about any possible bias Mr Ovies my have, the Governor’s spokesman simply laughed and said,
“There is no danger of that, Joe Ovies hates everyone’s posse.”
UNC plays Virginia Tech this week which means someone in the local media is going to trot out a reference to Frank Beamer screwing Dick Baddour over in 2000 when he verbally agreed to take the UNC job then reneged upon his return to Blacksburg after the Hokies showed him the money. You would have thought Baddour learned a valuable lesson here and that is: Get them to sign the darn contract before letting them go back to their current employer and get all weepy eyed at the sight of money a campus they think of as home. Baddour was a slow learner in this respect since Roy basically did the same thing, though not for money, but because he is sentimental, at times to a fault. Anyway. Per Local Media Rules someone out there is required to waste my time and yours by bringing up the 2000 UNC coaching search which ultimately yielded The Coach Who Shall Not Be Named.

Maybe it was the fact I was neck deep in work both at home and the office but this training camp for college football has been rather boring. From the Tar Heel fan perspective there were no brewing personnel decisions to be made. That tends to be the case when the QB slot has been decided ahead of time. UNC returned 17 starters which left only a handful positions to be decided. So deep and abiding is this boredom that we are now getting stories about how UNC offensive coordinator John Shoop will coach from the both instead of the sideline as he did last season. Compelling stuff those coaching whereabouts during the game.
And it is not just the coverage of UNC that has been fairly slow. ACC Now had eight different posts on their blog pertaining to NCSU starting QB Russell Wilson. This is not a complaint about bias or even a gripe in general but eight different posts about one player? That is a sure sign of how desperate media and bloggers alike are for stories. At any rate it all comes to an end tonight when real football action will permeate out lives and give us a welcome distraction. That is until October when I will be sifting through hundreds of preseason basketball articles about the odds on favorite Tar Heels.
This is your pot stirring angle du jour for the local media this morning concerning the basketball schedule.
