Mike Fox Named National COY

A first for a UNC and ACC baseball coach.

North Carolina head coach Mike Fox, who guided the Tar Heels to a third straight trip to the College World Series in 2008, was named national coach of the year Monday by Baseball America. A two-time ABCA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, Fox is the first UNC baseball coach to claim national coaching honors and the first Atlantic Coast Conference skipper to be honored by Baseball America.

UNC was won 165 games in the past three seasons which leads the nation, finished 2nd in the CWS twice and 3rd this season, won the first ACC title since 1990 in 2007 and has established UNC as a powerhouse in the growing sport of college baseball.

Congrats Coach Fox and the rest of the Diamond Heels on another outstanding season.

ACC Now: Weak Draft For ACC Points to Title

Well at least it has in two past instances.

In 2000 and 2004 the ACC had only one first rounder in the NBA Draft. The very next season yielded a national title in the form of Duke in 2001 and UNC in 2005. We will see if it happens a third time. Looking at the ACC on paper, the league did retain a good portion of talent, the problems for the 11 teams outside of Chapel Hill four of those players were Carolina blue.

It is interesting to note that this is not only about underclassmen being drafted high but seniors as well. Obviously the ACC will lose a whole slew of graduating players but out of the senior class only three were good enough to be drafted and that was in the middle to very late 2nd round. What that basically says, it the talent pool, while losing some good college players, did not take much of a hit in the high caliber NBA talent department. Also, the decision of various underclassmen to stay bodes well for the league as they try to get more than four teams into the NCAA Tournament.

UNC Current vs Former Players Video

This showed up on the IC Free Board. A fan was at the UNC basketball camp and took camcorder video of the pick up game between the former and current players which will go on all summer.

Click on this link to check it out. It does take a minute or two to get started but worth the wait, especially seeing a healthy Ty Lawson running the point.
