Mike DeCourcy grapples with the possible stumbling blocks to a UNC title.
UPDATE: The Heels closed the deal winning the game 14-4. UNC will now take a 3rd consecutive run at winning a national title in baseball and this time Oregon State won’t be a problem…they failed to even make the tournament. Is the third time the charm? We will find out soon.

Barring a miraculous comeback by Coastal Carolina, the earth opening up and swallowing the team or a nuclear strike on Cary.
The Heels jumped all over Coastal Carolina in the 2nd inning going ahead 6-0. They have since doubled that total and lead 12-0 with the Chanticleers batting in the bottom of the 7th. Aside from the offensive explosion UNC has gotten a two hit shutout thus far from Adam Warren and now Colin Bates.
UPDATE: UNC knocks off UNC-Wilmington for the second time in as many days securing a spot in their 3rd straight Super Regional. The Heels will host either Coastal Carolina or East Carolina ensuring that a Carolina of some sort is going to be in the College World Series.
Alex White pitched a complete game three hitter giving up only one run while striking out eight as UNC defeated UNC-Wilmington 5-1. UNCW now plays Elon again and the winner of that game will play UNC Sunday evening at 5 PM. Should UNC win that game the Heels advance to the Super Regional. Since the regional is double elmination, UNC gets two cracks at going to the Super Regional.
Incidentally the only time this season UNC lost two straight games, it was a loss against Georgia Tech followed by a loss to Elon who could potentially be the opponent Sunday night.
UNC opened up the NCAA Baseball Cary Regional with a 16-8 win over Mt. St. Mary’s in a repeat drubbing of The Mount by a UNC team in the NCAA Tournament. The Heels will take on UNC-Wilmington at 5 PM on Saturday. The Seahawks handled Elon 5-2 in the first game on Friday.
The Heels offense had little trouble getting things going with RH Tim Fedroff collecting six RBIs. Dustin Ackley and Seth Williams had 3 RBIs apiece with Williams also going deep. The pitching is a bit of a concern with Mike Fox opting to use seven different pitchers. Rob Wooten got the win in 1.2 innings worked.
UNC will attempt to make it three straight trips to the College World Series, this time as the #2 seed overall in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. UNC will be a regional host at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, NC. Here is the weekend schedule from Tar Heel Blue.
I am not sure if I have ever mentioned it but Tar Heel Wife does not watch basketball nor does she know much about what happens during the season unless I am rambling about it when she is in the same room. Despite this disinterest in basketball, every year I print a bracket out and sit down with her so she can make picks. The impeccable logic she uses is based on how much she likes a certain team’s name or location. She also refuses to pick Gonzage because she was burned in the past by them. Anyway, she made her picks, I made mine and away we went.
To make a long story short, she crushed me.
Not only did she have 27 first round games picked correctly but she got the final seven games right picking the entire Final Four, the championship game and Kansas to win it all. So, as an humble act on my part allow me to recognize Tar Heel Wife as the Bracket Queen of the THF home.
I think I am more interested in watching a title game after UNC is in the Final Four versus last year when they never made it to the final weekend. Then again it sucks big time the Heels are not playing tonight and I really hope Kansas plays at the same level tonight win or lose just so I do not feel like we got bounced by a fluke performance.
In terms of who to pull for here, there are certain points of view on picking which team you want to win. Staying neutral is an option but that is not much fun. Kansas offers an interesting choice for UNC fans since you have to ask yourself whether you want to back the team that ousted you or consider the Dean Smith-Larry Brown-Roy Williams connections to Kansas and adopt them as our midwestern basketball cousin? The latter seems fine but the other factor for me is I simply cannot give any love to Memphis and John Calipari. I just do not care for Calipari and when he interviewed for the NC State job he was more concerned about whether the academic standards could be lowered than anything else. This is not to say his players are not good kids but Calipari has always struck me as a bit shady so Kansas it is, if for no other reason than to rest in the knowledge that at least the Heels got dropped by the national champion and it was destiny.
