UNC opened up the NCAA Baseball Cary Regional with a 16-8 win over Mt. St. Mary’s in a repeat drubbing of The Mount by a UNC team in the NCAA Tournament. The Heels will take on UNC-Wilmington at 5 PM on Saturday. The Seahawks handled Elon 5-2 in the first game on Friday.
The Heels offense had little trouble getting things going with RH Tim Fedroff collecting six RBIs. Dustin Ackley and Seth Williams had 3 RBIs apiece with Williams also going deep. The pitching is a bit of a concern with Mike Fox opting to use seven different pitchers. Rob Wooten got the win in 1.2 innings worked.
UNC opens the NCAA Baseball Tournament tonight in Cary against Mt. St. Mary’s(and who says the NCAA Tournament Committee does not have a sense of humor)
The Tar Heel Three ended the draft camp. Danny Green and Ty Lawson did not play today and Wayne Ellington had a marginal performance. I will have more later as the reports come out.
Ellington plays better, Lawson gets hurt, Green injures more body parts.
The NBA next season will begin imposing fines on players who are clearly “flopping” to draw a foul. I would say JJ Redick is bothered by this new rule but he never plays so it really has no impact on him. Rasheed Wallace, always good for a quote, made his feelings concerning flopping known in between the use of various unprintable words.
“All that bull(bleep)-ass calls they had out there. With Mike [Callahan] and Kenny [Mauer] — you’ve all seen that (bleep),” Wallace said. “You saw them calls. The cats are flopping all over the floor and they’re calling that (bleep). That (bleep) ain’t basketball out there. It’s all (bleeping) entertainment. You all should know that (bleep). It’s all (bleeping) entertainment.”
Good ol’ Sheed. I never know if we should think he is awesome or be embarrassed by him. Probably a little of both.
Mostly the same as what I noted earlier except Ginvony is convinced Ellington should head back to college after the camp. Lawson was superb and Green’s ankle is setting him back.
Lawson looked good, Ellington not so much, Green is hurt.
Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Cope With the NBA Draft Process.
UPDATE: IC talked to Danny Green following the game. He basically said the ankle was injured three weeks ago playing a pickup game and it tweaks now and again. And in all honesty, what do you expect? This is the year of the injury at UNC, it just took a while longer to get around to Green. Seriously, he still plans to push forward and by all accounts he played pretty well before he tweaked the ankle and was hobbled. Of course no Danny Green interview he gives now is complete without delving into breakdown between him and Roy Williams. Dude, let it go already. Do you really have to discuss it every time you talk to the media now?
According to WRAL’s Jay Jennings on site at the draft camp, Danny Green is “limping badly” while playing in the day’s first game. This echos what is being said on the Inside Carolina premium message board. Depending on the severity of the injury, Green might be done at Orlando and I imagine looking very hard at returning to Chapel Hill since there is no way he can showcase his skills if he is hurt. The left ankle injury was previous mentioned by Jonathan Givoy of Draft Express who observed Green working out near his home in New York.
The NBA Pre-Draft Camp opened in Orlando last night with the three Tar Heels, Ty Lawson, Danny Green and Wayne Ellington participating in scrimmages and today beginning at 9 AM is, according to Draft Express, “when the camp really starts.” Meanwhile, Greg Barnes of Inside Carolina interviewed all three players. Nothing earth shattering in what Lawson and Ellington have to say. It is your standard set of quotes you get from guys going through the draft process. Danny Green on the other hand continues to be loquacious at every opportunity.
