Marcus Ginyard Gets It

If anything is abundantly clear, it is that Tar Heel Fan is a big fan of Marcus Ginyard.  I love the type of player he is, one that has defensive prowess and generally puts forth a great effort every time out.  I have also made no bones about the fact I think he should be the starting shooting guard in place of Wayne Ellington.  And if any of that were not enough, based on what he had to say to the N&O he could very well be the vocal leader this team needs:

But I do believe that last year’s team would beat this year’s team at this point in the season,” sophomore Marcus Ginyard said Tuesday. “I think that the attitude, the drive, the competitiveness was on another level last year. And that’s the thing that disappoints me, personally, the most

“It should have been a wake-up call against Gonzaga, it should have been a wake-up call at Virginia Tech, then it should have been a wake-up call against Virginia Tech, again,” said Ginyard, whose 24-5 team plays at Georgia Tech on Thursday.

“… Me, personally, I feel like it’s a now or never thing. I feel like that if this team doesn’t realize that’s what needs to happen, that’s what needs to be done right now, we’re going to end up with a lot of long sad faces the next couple of weeks.”

One of the more exciting aspects of his attitude here is that he will be with this team two more years and could be a huge part of UNC winning a national championship more so for what he brings in the intangibles department.  He is also absolutely correct about how this team should have responded to the previous losses and how they should approach the remaining games.  And I absolutely agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment: Now or never.

Now starts tomorrow night in Atlanta.

Five Pressing Issues for UNC

Let’s be honest. There are concerns with the 2006-07 version on the Tar Heels. The expectations based on the talent and the perception that no one in the ACC was even close may have been a tad high. Or maybe not. Maybe everyone else was much closer to UNC than we all thought. At any rate UNC sits in a very precarious situation. The #1 seed for the NCAA Tournament is hanging by a thread, the Heels have now twice squandered the outright lead in the ACC, and some of the fan base is restless to the point of openly question whether or not Roy is a good coach. And while I am not going to jump into that pit of snakes, I think there are five issues in respect to this team that should be addressed.

Carnival of Links to Stuff You Probably Already Read

I had a long weekend at work and also have been doing my taxes so the blogging has been light.  I should pick up the pace here this evening and through the rest of the season.  In the meantime let me defer to some of the fine articles out there on the interwebs

Maryland 89 UNC 87

I knew it was coming.

When Bobby Frasor missed the layup at the six minute mark a feeling caught me in the pit of my stomach and when it was all said and one UNC blew a 12 point lead over the final six minutes and surrendered that precious one game lead in the ACC standings. And I do not know what to make of this team. They have a penchant for inconsistency and even with the foul situation alongside the rebounding problems UNC was in control of the game before the Terps took over. It is painfully clear they should have finished the job but did not. The four fouls on Lawson were huge and as I pointed out before this team can have real issues with the offense if Lawson is on the bench.  It is not always the case but in matchups with teams like Maryland, his presence is crucial.  When he was out, the Terps made their run and by the time he got back in it was too late.

Now UNC needs help from UVa to hand VT a fifth loss in order to maintain the line on the #1 seed in the ACC. In my opinion the NCAA Tournament seeding is extremely muddled because Wisconsin last twice this week, Florida lost to an LSU team far worse than Maryland, and UNC’s loss is actually not that bad all things considered except it is their 5th loss and right now they probably need to win the next two and the ACC title game to be #1 in the East.

On a side note, let me take a moment to call out those in Tar Heel nation who seem hell bent on selling Roy out for the loss today. The last I checked he was winning 80% of his games and last season took a group of young players who no one thought would make the tournament and put them second in the ACC. Now, this season just because a more talented team has five losses against what everyone has called a more competitive conference some of these folks are ready to throw him under the bus or so it seems. So in respect to these people let me make the following suggestions.

Let’s fire Roy and rehire Matt Doherty. Obviously Roy is not getting it done and his winning percentage plus the national title he won in 2005 are not enough to stave off a rabid ban of morons on keyboard from selling their coach out over a tough loss. So let’s return to the great and wonderful days of 8-20 basketball and forget this guy since he apparently has no idea what he is doing on the bench.

I do not know why UNC is having these lapses but I do know it has less to do with the coaching and more to do with the youth of the team, the parity of ACC basketball, and the simple fact that sometimes you lose these kinds of games. So back off the coach and enjoy the fact that this team is still 24-5 and not worse.

UNC at Maryland

Where: Comcast Center, College Park, MD
When: February 25th, 5:30 PM
TV: FSN
Records: UNC 24-4, 10-3 ACC; Maryland 21-7, 7-6 ACC

I have been knee deep in patching servers in preparation for the new Daylight Savings Time date.  So this will be short.

I think UNC can show some serious intentions about winning the national championship by winning the next three games in decisive fashion.  Maryland is a hot team right now and UNC has shown it can rise to the challenge on the road.  UNC follows this game with a trip to Atlanta before hosting Duke.  Much like the 2005 team which also faced a huge battle at College Park, UNC can definitely make a statement here with a win.  Maryland likes to press and has great guard play, something that has given UNC fits this season.

Also, today is my birthday and since I have been alive UNC is 5-2 on my birthday including a win over NC State the day I was born.  The only two losses came under Matt Doherty…let’s never speak of them again.

ACC Basketball Update(2/22)

Results

UNC 83 NC State 64
Georgia Tech 75 Wake Forest 61
Virginia Tech 79 Boston  College 62
Miami 68 Virginia 60
Maryland 73 Florida State 55

Duke 71 Clemson 66

Analysis

  •  Virginia will not win the ACC Tournament. How do I know this?  Because Florida is way to close to Puerto Rico. Whatever happened at Miami was the same thing that happened in PR where UVa lost to App State and Utah.
  • A week ago UNC found themselves mixed up with a pack of teams and a lot of questions about whether or not they could still win the regular season.  Now UNC is in sole possession of first place and needs to win out to ensure the regular season title.
  • BC is in a full blow tailspin having now lost three straight.  Given the frustrating nature of these losses their attitudes and general thuggery have been on full display.
  • VT  bounced back from the loss to NC State  to thrash BC in ways I am not permitted to describe on this family friendly blog.  They hold a tiebreaker on UNC and need a Tar Heel loss and to win the remainder of their games which includes a trip to Charlottesville.
  • Maryland and Georgia Tech are making their push for the NCAA Tournament.  Actually Maryland should already be there, though they need one more win for 8-8 in the ACC.  GT is close but not quite there yet.
  • Clemson is done unless they make it to Sunday of the ACC Tournament.  Winning it would be automatic and just being there might be enough of a bump to slide in.  That’s not happening so maybe the Tigers can bring the NIT back to South Carolina for the third straight season.
  • Duke is now 8-6 and if BC continues to sputter the Devils might get out of playing on Thursday.
  • NCAA Tournament prospects at this point:
  • Locks: UNC, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Boston College, Duke
  • Should Be In: Maryland
  • Possibly In: Georgia Tech
  • Toast: Florida State
  • Burnt Toast: Clemson

UNC 83 NC State 64

Revenge exacted.

This was about fresher legs in the second half.  NC State had foul trouble and could not keep pace with the Heels once the defense started cooking.  There is no way of knowing what impact Lowe’s absence had on the Wolfpack players in the second half.  I think the depth and defense get it done regardless of who is sitting on the other bench.  The rotation again was another interesting thing to watch.  Unlike most of the media who seem to think they know better than a coach who has won 80% of his games, Roy shows no signs of moving to an eight man rotation.  In fact the split in the minutes at point was really interesting but Quentin Thomas’ play had something to do with that since he made some huge contributions in the first half.

Wright, Ginyard, and Green all had solid games.  Wright was a beast pure and simple.  Hansbrough was his usual workhorse self and overall the defensive intensity was what it needed to be for most of the game.  The hope is this is a UNC team starting to roll and the road game at Maryland against a red hot Terp team will be a huge matchup.

NC State at UNC: Live Blog

It is a simple enough plot. NC State upset UNC in Raleigh in what many Wolfpack fans harkened as a return to the glory days of Jim Valvano. Sidney Lowe, point guard on the 1983 NCAA title team, donned a red sports jacket and slayed the beast from Chapel Hill. Why? Because Lowe understands what the UNC game means unlike that other guy who is coaching somewhere out west now. Now, UNC would like to set the record straight and we can only hope the suit is in attendance so we can drop it to 1-1 on the season.

Live blogging after the jump.

NC State at UNC

Where: Dean Smith Center, Chapel Hill, NC
When: February 21st, 9:00 PM
TV: Raycom/LF Regional

Records: UNC 23-4, 9-3 ACC; NC State 14-11, 4-8 ACC

This would be a bigger upset than February 3rd in Raleigh because (1) NC State would be winning at Chapel Hill to collect an improbably sweep and (2) UNC knew what was coming and did nothing to deal with it. On top of that there is an expectation that NC State has a reasonable chance to win this game because they handled UNC so well in Raleigh, UNC lost to VT in a revenge game which somehow proves that UNC is not necessarily capable of handling the return game and NC State showed on Sunday that they can shoot lights out versus a very good team.

And for all of these reasons I think UNC will win and it will not even be close.

The last I checked NC State was 14-11 overall which means that 11 times this year they lost to teams not as good as UNC is right now. I also happen to think that what happened in Raleigh three weeks ago and what happened last Tuesday versus Virginia Tech has a great deal of impact on how UNC comes out and plays this game. Aside from all of that, does anyone really expect NC State to come out and shoot the ball they way they did that Saturday given they did practically the same thing three days ago? I think this Tar Heel team has learned some valuable lessons during the past eight days about what it means to play with focus and intensity. Marcus Ginyard has suddenly become that vocal leader I think UNC needs and Reyshawn Terry despite the propensity for the bonehead foul also show an equal if not greater propensity for hitting the big shot against Boston College.

So while everyone is willing to pour the accolades on a team that is still fighting for NIT life let me say that while the Pack have been impressive on occassion this season, there is nothing that makes me think tonight will be one of the nights. The time has come for a statement win from these Heels and clear signal to the rest of the ACC that this team is ready to meet expectations.

Live Blogging Tonight? Yes. Yes I am.

It should be noted on this, the first anniversary of the Tar Heel Fan blog, that my first ever live blog was a year ago tomorrow and it was UNC at NC State in what was deemed by many Wolfpack fans to be a watershed game for the Pack and Herb Sendek.  Turns out they were correct since it instigated a four game losing streak for NC State and was a mitigating factor in Sendek’s eventual resignation in favor of the Arizona State job.

At any rate the plotlines are different and it should be fun given the history this season alone.
