Dayton at UNC

Where: Dean Smith Center, Chapel Hill, NC
When: December 31st, 3:00 PM
TV: Fox Sports Net
Records: UNC 11-1, Dayton 10-2

Oh yeah…another game against a school who is probably totall disinterested in running with UNC.  On the other hand Dayton is 10-2 but one of those losses was a 30 point drubbing from Pittsburgh.  Dayton also lost to Matt Doherty and SMU earlier in the season.  Just a quick perusal of the Flyers schedule tells me they are not a powerful offense because (1) they have broken 70 exactly three times against schools who may be some of the worst in the nation and (2) the margin of victory against said schools is not impressive.  So I think we can expect Dayton to attempt to play at a slower pace since they lack the depth to challenge UNC nor do they have the offensive weapons.  Dayton also lacks any kind of interior presence which would give Hansbrough and Wright too much trouble.  So for the Heels this is a game about maintianing focus, imposing their will on Dayton for a full forty minutes, and continuing the improvements on defense as well as the offensive balance we saw versus Rutgers.

Five Questions About the ACC

As the year ends, we are now almost two months into the basketball season and on the cusp of the conference season being the bulk of the schedule going forward.  Having seen the 12 ACC schools play we can obviously start asking serious questions about each team and consider whether or not the things we all thought were true before the ball was tipped are true now.

ACC Basketball Update(12/29)

In case you didn’t know it there were other games being played besides the one Texas Tech was in.

  • Boston College continues to be a total enigma losing to Duquesne of all people 98-93.  Duquesne presently has a losing record which included a seven game losing streak.  So the only thing we know about BC is that we really do not know anything about BC nor can we reasonably ascertain which version will show up any given night.
  • Clemson continued to make their case for Top 25 legitimacy by beating Georgia 75-60.  The Tigers are looking more and more like the real deal.  The Tigers should clear Georgia State without too much trouble before playing three of their first four ACC games on the road.
  • NC State had enjoyed some early season success but now the warts seem to be showing, even in a 64-57 win over an East Carolina team that should have not been in the game.  Right now the biggest problem for NC State is the lack of depth though the 13 turnovers tonight was 1/3 of what the Pack committed on Saturday.
  • North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Virginia, and Maryland all won big over significantly lesser opponents.

UNC 87 Rutgers 48

Now that’s what I am talking about.

Several things I saw tonight which seems to show that this team may have arrived at the level we all expected them to be when the season started. Ty Lawson racked up nine assists with zero turnovers which included an incredible bounce pass over his head while laying on his back. Having Lawson fully in charge of the offense at point can only mean the offense is close to being fully gelled.  Brandan Wright is sick, sick, sick. Wright is smooth as glass and grabbed some incredible rebounds with that wingspan he has. Tyler Hansbrough was his usual bullish self in the lane and hit that sweet hook show a couple of times. Wayne Ellington was on fire from behind the arc hitting five of six threes. This was an utterly balanced offensive attack and if UNC can come out running the physical/slashing tandem of Hansbrough and Wright in the paint with Lawson breaking down defense and distributing the ball along with Ellington opening up the lane by shredding the zone from the perimeter. Add to these efforts the supporting cast for UNC hitting shots when needed and it will make slowing down the UNC offense very tough.

Another aspect of the defense which stuck out to me was the how intense the pressure defense was tonight. There was an expectation UNC would bring serious pressure defense as a part of their extended depth. So far this season that did not appear to be the case until tonight when it seems like Roy Williams flipped a switch and had the Heels play that vaunted jump pressure more often in this game as in the first 11 of the season. The defense had been a bit of a bugaboo early on but now it seems like the players are getting a handle on the defensive schemes as well as the idea of playing with high intensity. Also, for the second straight game, UNC worked it’s way through first half but came out in the second half to impose it’s will and style on it’s opponent to completely dominate the rest of the game.

Aside from all of that, this is a fun team to watch on so many levels. Then again winning is always fun but I would venture to say this is far more entertaning than the winning going on in Durham right now.

Considering the All Time Wins Record

Obviously many Tar Heel fans have a vested in interest in Dean Smith’s record being broken by Bobby Knight. My own personal opinion is that it was inevitable the record would be passed and as time passed Dean would be relegated further down the list. So getting to terribly upset over the record being broken is simply not a constructive exercise. Am I a little agitated that Knight is the one to break it first? Yes, simply because for all of Knight’s accomplishment on the court which included one more national championship than Dean, Knight is also a bully. This is obviously an individual who lacks the self control to refrain from kicking his own son, throwing a chair on the court, assaulting a police officer in Puerto Rico, treating journalists paid to ask questions as though they are beneath contempt, and being a general jerk for the sake of being a jerk. Whereas Dean was one to step aside and eschew the attention of the moment, Knight has been one to bring negative attention to himself. It also should be noted Dean was far more consistent over the course of his final 27 seasons with 20 wins seasons in each of them and 23 straight NCAA Tournament appearance. UNC also went to 13 straight Sweet Sixteens during that span. By and large UNC teams were consistently better from season to season under Dean than Indiana teams were under Knight. So as far as I am concerned Knight can have the record, I’ll take Dean Smith with all of his class and upstanding behavior as well as the consistent winning which aside from the number of NCAA titles exceeds what Knight did over the same span. Besides it took Knight five more seasons to get to the mark than it did Dean. Sounds like Dean was far more successful on average than “the General.”

I also would like to mention that ESPN’s hypocrisy in covering the record being broken is beyond the pale. First of all they use the label “winningest men’s Division I coach” in reference to the record when two years ago they practically foamed at the mouth when Tennessee women’s coach Pat Summit passed Dean Smith’s total to become the “all time winningest coach in college basketball” Here is my confusion. If Knight is set to become only the all time “men’s” leader then isn’t Pat Summit the all time “women’s” leader? Wouldn’t that mean she did not actually break a record when she hit 880? The point is ESPN is willing to use the gender specific designation when referring to this record but when it suited their own marketing campaign for women’s basketball they abandoned it to create an absolutely false milestone.

Secondly, ESPN was so busy telling us two months ago that Knight was the epitome of all evil for tapping the chin of a player to force him to pay attention and now they are so busy being over backwards to spin his career as being one of the greatest in history. Of course based on win total it is but in reference to the various controversies they fall silent opting to promote any and every accomplishment, including a 1979 NIT title which Rick Majerus talked about during two different segments as though it was another NCAA title. I was under the impression that the NIT was where those who could not make the NCAA Tournament went to play. And if that was not bad enought during the UNC-Rutgers game Terry Gannon and Len Elmore spent 80% of the game talking about Knight. It think it is apparent these talking points came from Bristol since Gannon and Elmore are primarily ACC based announcers and would not normally be so caught up referring to another coach so often during an ACC broadcast unless told to do so. It was downright disgusting the degree to which ESPN is plugging the record even to the point they spend so much time during a different game talking about it.

Obviously the hype machine at ESPN cannot be quelled which can only mean that when Mike Krzyzewski gets ready to pass Knight some of use may actually take our own lives before it actually happens.

Rutgers at UNC

Where: Dean Smith Center, Chapel Hill, NC
When: December 28th, 7:00 PM
TV: ESPN2
Records: UNC 10-1, Rutgers 6-5

According to the News and Observer, Bobby Frasor’s foot is the biggest storyline here as UNC should easily handle the Scarlet Knights.  My question is how long will Frasor stay out and at what point is there a concern his absence and subsequent return will disrupt the progress we have seen in how this team is coming together.  The other issue is that of rust after being off nearly a week and being home for the holidays.  That alone usually lends itself to a slow start for both teams.  This is another one of those building block games and one of three at home out of conference before UNC welcomes Florida State on Jan. 7 for the ACC opener.

THF Top Five Stories of 2006

Yes, I really like those end of year lists. It also nice to sit back and take stock of the year that was and how I covered it as a Tar Heel fan living in North Carolina. So without further ado here are Tar Heel Fan’s top five stories.

#5. J.J. Redick and Duke favored early; choke late

Duke received an exceptional degree of season long hype which was unusual in the sense they did not have the personnel needed to live up to the expectations. Of course J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams were All Americans but with a freshman point guard and unreliable production from other positions it was only matter of time before things fell apart in Durham. It did after Redick became the all time leading scorer in ACC history the fatigue of playing almost 40 minutes a night began to catch up with him and on March 4th UNC went to Cameron Indoor Stadium and shocked the Devils. Duke recovered briefly to win the ACC Tournament and reach the Sweet Sixteen for the nith straight year which ESPN’s Andy Katz said was the same as UCLA winning 10 titles which was perhaps the stupidest thing I have ever read.  However, Redick never seemed to find his jumper in the Big Dance and fourth seeded LSU knocked off the Devils in what has been referred to by some in the UNC online community as the “biggest choke ever.”

#4. NC State Changed Coaches in Basketball and Football

It is not often a school makes changes to both major sports in the same calendar year but that was the case in Raleigh. First in April a disgruntled Wolfpack nation made much of displeasure known to the extent that Herb Sendek took a hint and left town for Arizona State. What followed was a somewhat protracted and often times publically orchestrated coaching search which embarassed many in the NC State fan community. Wolfpack AD Lee Fowler did very little to endear himself with each public rejection but finally settled on Sidney Lowe, a former player and NBA assistant coach. The jury is still out on his success but the first report cards on his recruiting and coaching style have been very good. On the football side, Wolfpack nation got tired of Chuck Amato’s bravado and so did the powers that be so he was shown the door after a 3-8 season which included a 3rd straight loss to UNC. Fowler handled this search much better than the last one and hired Tom O’Brien away from Boston College within about 10 days. The hopes are high in Wolfpack nation that O’Brien can bring the on the field accomplishments so sorely lacking under Amato.

#3. Carolina Hurricanes win Stanley Cup

Yes, this is a blog devoted to UNC football and basketball but living in Raleigh I was swept onto the Carolina Hurricans bandwagon as I watched them become the first professional team in North Carolina history to win a title. I know very little about hockey so watching the Canes play was a learning experience as much as anything else. However, the title run had all the elements of drama and intensity that could draw in the most novel sports fan. The other aspect of it was living in the same city with a Game 7 happening twice in the hometown arena had a special feeling all it’s own and was the one uniting factor among UNC, NC State, and Duke fans.

#2. UNC Basketball has surprise season in 05-06; begins 06-07 with high expectations

After losing the top seven players from the 2005 National Championship game UNC came into 05-06 with low expectations riding on sparingly used David Noel and a handful of freshmen. By the time UNC reached late January things were better than expected but a loss to Miami and Boston College in Chapel Hill showed UNC to be a borderline NCAA Tournament team. Then the world caught fire and despite a loss to Duke at home, the Heels, led by ACC Rookie of the Year Tyler Hansbrough, started on a winning streak culminating with the win in Durham. The momentum wore off and the Heels fell victim to the George Mason juggernaut but a Tar Heel star was born in Hansbrough and that set the stage for a 9-1 start in 06-07 plus a #2 ranking. UNC returned Hansbrough and group of sophomores to go along with the best recruiting class in the nation. As UNC starts to gel there are high hopes we could talking about title defense this time next season.

#1. UNC fires John Bunting; hire Butch Davis

The football season started with the hope UNC could win seven games and the John Bunting tenure would show some signs of improvement. By the time UNC lost to Clemson at the end of September, Tar Heel nation began beating the drum….very loudly. The calls for his ouster on crescendoed from there and following an embarassing shutout loss on national TV to Virginia the table was set and Dick Baddour fired John Bunting after he refused to resign. What followed was a coaching search centered on former Miami coach Butch Davis who was considered the best candidate available. In the midst of this pursuit, which took place in almost total silence, this blog advocated heavily for Paul Johnson of Navy but in the end UNC offered Davis, he accepted and I had misgivings. The most intriguing part of the search was the way UNC announced the decision which included a vehement denial of the hire when Inside Carolina and the WSJ had broken the story because the administration wanted to give John Bunting a nice homecoming game. UNC announced the following Monday and at the end of the season a full press conference was accompanied by huge marketing effort. The football season next year will be high anticipated.

ACC Bowl Preview

Emerald Bowl: Florida State vs. UCLA
December 27th, 8:00 PM, ESPN

This may constitute the earliest FSU has played a bowl game since I have been paying attention to such things.  FSU limps in following a 30-0 trouncing at home to the eventual ACC champion Wake Forest and a tough loss to Florida.  UCLA played BCS spoiler and sent USC to the Rose Bowl instead of Glendale.  I think the edge goes to a UCLA team who beat the Trojans and came very close to knocking off Notre Dame in South Bend.

UCLA 24 FSU 10

Music City Bowl: Clemson vs Kentucky
December 29th, 1:00 PM, ESPN

When Clemson knocked off Georgia Tech 30-7 everyone assumed they were the real deal then they lost three of their final four games including one to rival South Carolina.  Kentucky is a suprise team out of the SEC who usually flounders at 4-7 but turned it around for a bowl season.  Clemson should still have too much offensive firepower for the Wildcats.

Clemson 35 UK 21

Champs Sports Bowl: Maryland vs. Purdue
December 29th, 8:00 PM, ESPN

Maryland went from an allegedly weak team with unimpressive wins over some cupcakes to playing Wake Forest for a spot in the ACC title game.  The Terps finished 8-4 but benefited from having a host of veteran players.  Purdue went 5-3 it was has been called a weak Big Ten which is all I know about the Boilermakers.  I think the Terps can gut a tough one out here.

Maryland 20 Purdue 19

Car Care Bowl: Boston College vs. Navy
December 30th, 1:00 PM, ESPN

Boston College will go into this game without head coach Tom O’Brien who is now at NC State.  As far as we know Paul Johnson is still at Navy unless he loses all semblance of sanity and takes the Alabama job between now and Saturday.  The interesting thing about these two teams is both are very disicplined as well as having a tendency to grind the ball.  It should be a low scoring affair and BC’s defense should handle the Midshipmen running attack.

BC 28 Navy 20

Chick-Fil-A Bowl: Virginia Tech vs. Georgia
December 30th, 8:00 PM, ESPN

I think if we look at the ACC teams honestly, VT by season’s end was the best in the conference, particularly the way they handled Wake Forest.  Had they been playing like that against GT and BC they would have been in Jacksonville.  VT is playing excellent defense and I think Georgia is having a bit of a down year.  The VT offense is also much improved since early season.  Look for a Frank Beamer special teams TD somewhere in this game to turn the tide.

VT 31 Georgia 14

MPC Computers Bowl: Miami vs Nevada
December 31st, 7:30 PM, ESPN

Probably an appropriate end to the Miami season to be exiled to Boise for their bowl game.  In many ways it is will be a merciful end to a year which has included very little good and lots of bad and ugly.  Larry Coker gets one more shot at the sideline and lean very heavily on a defense coached by his already name successor.  Nevada never really registered a win over anyone significant and when they played anyone of notoriety it ended rather badly.  Coker goes out a winner.

Miami 30 Nevada 10

Gator Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. West Virginia
January 1st, 1:00 PM, CBS

Georgia Tech lost Reggie Ball for the bowl game because the fifth year senior was declared academically ineligible.  How do you get declared academically ineligible in your fifth year?  Shouldn’t you be taking like one class in the PE department at that point?  Of course Steve Logan on 620 called him a “USDA certified dumb***”  Can’t say I disagree with that.  Of course given Ball’s tendency to throw the ball away it might work out for the Jackets.  This game comes down to whether or not the GT defense can stop the WV offense. I just do not see that happening.

West Virginia 41 GT 21

Orange Bowl: Wake Forest vs. Louisville
January 2nd, 8:00 PM, Fox

Yeah, I am gringing at watching this game on Fox.  What Wake Forest has done this season is incredible and I think watching the tricks Jim Grobe will pull out of the bag for the Cardinals.  Considering what Rutgers did to close down L’ville I would not count Wake Forest out of this one.  I am also bound to pick Wake because I promised never to pick against them again.

Wake Forest 34 Lousiville 33

ACC Basketball Update(12/26)

Yeah I was too busy eating Christmas cookies and turkey to get this out earlier…

Saturday

  • Clemson is 12-0 after smacking Western Carolina 103-60.  I am not sure what to make of the Tigers.  The diet so far has been fairly sweet but the 43 point win over a lower-middle tier school does cause you to take notice.  The early ACC schedule with Florida State and Georgia Tech will be a good measure of whether this team is legitimate.
  • NC State had done well to avoid any bad losses…until now.  Well, losing to Cincinnati 80-71 does not look that bad however the 32 turnovers they committed illustrates some serious weaknesses for the Pack, the foremost being taking care of the basketball.  Needless to say the sooner Engin Atsur gets back at point, the better for the Wolfpack.
  • Boston College never really showed up against Kansas and lost 84-66.  It was not a good showing for a BC team which has been hot and cold depending the point in the season.
  • In other action: Virginia Tech, Maryland, and Florida State all won easily while Miami fell way short against Louisville.

ACC Basketball Update(12/23)

Thursday

  • The game of the night was Duke playing Gonzaga in New York.  The Devils “gutted” out another win 61-54 and I cannot tell you how tired I am of hearing that.  The Bulldogs who lit UNC up were not as good against Duke and I really cannot decide whether that has to do with Duke’s defense or the fact that UNC seems to bring that out in teams.  Greg Paulus had 20 points which I am really hoping will end the constant assertion that he still needs to get over his injury.
  • Virginia beat PR Mayaguez who I never heard of before and only did so by a 59-52 score.  Not a good trip to San Juan for the Cavs.  On the other hand Appalachian State went down there and won the whole thing.  Maybe parity is here to stay.
  • Virginia Tech knocked off Seton Hall 80-61 on the undercard for Duke-Gonzaga.
  • Florida State handled Coastal Carolina to move to 10-2 overall.

Friday

  • UNC won the Tyler Hansbrough Homecoming Game over St. Louis 69-48 and unlike when Tyler was in high school his dad did not take the whole team out for pizza.
  • Georgia Tech won a very even keel game with Georgia 78-69.  The Yellow Jackets got a huge game from Thaddeus Young who had 24 and 11.  Whenever UNC and GT meet it will be fun watching all those young guys play against each other.
  • Wake Forest took care of Richmond 72-59 despite being down by 13 at half to the Spiders.
