Yes, College Was Fun

“It’s called having fun. If you knew half the stuff these guys do, a lot of you wouldn’t be able to sleep….”

-william

Yeah, I know…via the commenter Olivia:  Tyler takes his turn.

Also, according commenter Bill not only did Bobby and Tyler make the leap but so did Marcus Ginyard.  The guys worked hard and had a heck of a season.  Have fun while you can.

The Obama Scrimmage Not An NCAA Violation

It is a wonder more schools don’t commit violations.

They Should Not Have Let Marc Davis Retire

Click Picture to Enlarge

The guy jumping off the balcony of the frat house into the pool is Bobby Frasor.  Yes, that Bobby Frasor. The same Bobby Frasor, who on December 27, 2007 fell awkwardly during the game against Nevada and did unholy things to his left knee.  The same Bobby Frasor who now bears a four inch scar on that left knee as a result of the surgery required to repair his shredded ACL.  The same Bobby Frasor who, if Ty Lawson goes pro, will be the starting point guard and will also be only one of two point guards on the roster(the other being a freshman.)

I am glad to see the rehab is going so well but WHAT IN THE NAME OF DEAN SMITH ARE YOU DOING LEAPING OFF A BALCONY INTO A SWIMMING POOL!!!!!!!

*Ahem*

If you look at the right side of the balcony you will see Tyler Hansbrough standing there wearing a grey shirt.  Tyler is not watching his teammate make such a risky jump, he seems to be pretty enthralled with the attractive young lady standing in front of him.  These festivities took place on Friday afternoon, the same day Tyler announced he was returning to UNC for his senior season.  Friday was apparently a very good day for Tyler.

Obama Scrimmage Video

WRAL has about four minutes of video from the scrimmage with Barack Obama. I offer this for no other reason than to permit you to get your Tar Heel basketball fix since it has been almost a month since they played the final game of the season. Some noteworthy observations from the video: It appears Wayne Ellington and Deon Thompson are absent.  I also did not see Danny Green in the video but I saw him in the photo gallery on Tar Heel Blue.  Some guys may have had class or other obligations since this all went down this morning. The best part is when Tyler Hansbrough shoots an outside shot on Alex Stepheson and banks it in.  Stepheson smirks and shakes his head as they go back down the court.

Is it November yet?  And I am not talking about the election.

Odds and Ends

  • UNC played pickup ball with Presidential candidate Barack Obama on Tuesday morning.  Regardless of what you might think of his politics, it was undoubtedly a thrill for the players and a lot of fun.  Obama was in town for a campaign rally and apparently is quite the basketball afficianado though having former Duke player Reggie Love as his personal assistant shows an obvious lapse in judgement in this area.  Check out the photo gallery hereUpdate: More coverage from the N&O here.  Apparently he slipped past Hansbrough but missed the layup.
  • ACC Now is reporting that UNC women’s coach Sylvia Hatchell has been approached by South Carolina about their vacant head coaching position.  My response to that is, “Why in the name of Dean Smith would you leave UNC to coach at South Carolina?”  And yes I know Frank McGuire did it but he had a pro coaching stint in between.
  • Durrell Mapp and Connor Barth both signed free agent contracts with NFL teams following the draft.  Mapp was picked up by Green Bay and Barth went to Kansas City.
  • The UNC baseball team took two of three from FSU over the weekend in a battle of nationally ranked top three teams.  The Heels are looking to get back to the College World Series for a 3rd straight season and current sit 2nd in the Coastal Division behind #1 ranked Miami.

Kentwan Balmer Drafted in 1st Round

Some draft news of the good kind.  UNC DT Kentwan Balmer was selected 29th by the San Fransico 49ers.  Balmer really came on during his senior season and ended up being 2nd team All-ACC finishing with 59 tackles and three sacks.  This also helps in terms of recruting, especially when you consider Balmer went from off the radar to a first round pick in one year under Butch Davis.

DANNY GREEN DECLARES; NO AGENT

As I speculated when his name was floated earlier this week, Green and his father have staked out into the draft process independent of UNC.

“Danny and his father contacted me in the last 24 hours and indicated they wished to test the waters and enter Danny in the draft,” says head coach Roy Williams. “We have done the necessary paperwork to do that.”

Now you are looking at real problems since he was the safety net to losing Wayne Ellington and Ty Lawson.

Okay, I think this might be a huge issue because I think it points to broken relationship between Green and his family and the UNC staff. Remember Roy said late in the week that Green was not looking at going and dismissed the DraftExpress report out of hand. Obviously he was not informed of Green’s intentions and you have to wonder if (1) he asked Green prior to making the statement and was told it was not true or (2) he never talked to Green and dismissed the report when he asked on an assumption.

Another question is whether this pisses Roy off that he denied the report and then was basically undercut by Green and his father forcing him to make a statement today about. Anyway it goes, I am not sure it bodes well for Green to return. The pressures Green probably feels from his family given his father’s situation are tough but at the same time it has been documented that Green’s father has been discontent with the playing time his son has gotten.
