ACC Football Week #1: Preview

Here we go.   The silly season comes to end as we get real games to consider and speculate on.

ECU at #9 Virginia Tech

Let me go on record as saying that I think there is way too much stock put into the power of Hokie football as it relates to the events of last April.  Let me also point out that the power of Hokie football is going to be way too much for ECU to handle.

Virginia Tech 45 ECU 6

Marshall at Miami

Is it too easy to assume Miami will win this game considering they are playing at home even though the QB situation is somewhat in flux?  Sure why not.

Miami 21 Marshall 14

UConn at Duke

Some are calling this Duke’s best chance to beat someone…anyone this season.  Then again some guy called up David Glenn this afternoon and said was predicting Duke would go 6-6.  Let’s just say Glenn did really well not to laugh uncontrollably at this guy suggesting Duke would be Georgia Tech and either FSU or Miami.  Since I predicted Duke would lose every game last season I am content to keep predicting Duke losses until I get proven wrong.

UConn 20 Duke 16

Virginia at Wyoming

Welcome to the Hot Seat Season of Al Groh!  If I recall these two played last season and scored like 12 points total or something of that nature.  UVa goes on the road for this one and since I have no idea about Wyoming I am going to go with the Cavs on this one.

UVa 14 Wyoming 10

Georgia Tech at Notre Dame

The Jackets almost beat the Irish in Atlanta last season in a game which pretty much exposed ND as a fraud being ranked #2.  This season ND is not benefiting from the media fawning over them and the Jackets defense is pretty good.  GT wins this one in South Bend.

Georgia Tech 28 Notre Dame 20

Wake Forest at Boston College

Now we are cooking with kerosene.  The beauty of college football is one game can set your destiny for the season.  Granted whoever loses this game is not done in their quest to win the Atlantic Division but they are sitting in a very bad position.  Aside from that, this should be a good game plain and simple.  BC has Matt Ryan and a new coaching staff who will be letting the senior QB go a bit.  Wake is Wake with all of the delightful wrinkles Jim Grobe installs in an offense.  Should be fun!

Boston College 33 Wake Forest 30

Villanova at Maryland

Cupcake!

Maryland 35 Villanova 18

Central Florida at NC State

The debut of the Tom O’Brien Wolfpack.  The question is how much they will resemble the Tom O’Brien Boston College Eagles.  Probably not that much.  The Pack have great running backs but must get consistent play from Daniel Evans at QB.  In this game there should not be any problems Evans can’t handle and we can only hope UCF George O’Leary is truthful in the press conference afterwards.

NC State 24 UCF 10

James Madison at UNC

The Butch Davis era starts off a winner.  Full preview later.

UNC 31 JMU 14

#19 Florida State at Clemson

Bowden Bowl.  Given the turmoil of the Atlantic this game like the one in Chestnut Hill is going to place someone in a bad spot.  Tommy Bowden is dealing with a possible hot seat situation and I have to think if FSU has a season like they did last season, Seminole Nation is going to start asking questions as well.

FSU 24 Clemson 22

Changing the Culture

The N&O’s Robbi Pickeral examines the efforts Butch Davis is undertaking to change how football is viewed at UNC. Much of it reflects what I have been saying about the program improving even if the wins do not come this season.

New Blog Header

Let me send out a HUGE thank you to Zeke Smith for designing the new THF blog header which replaces the rather unfortunate one I tried to create using GIMP.  Zeke is a UNC grad who works as a freelance sports photographer and graphic artist.  He covers UNC for various publications and put together this excellent looking header which at the very least gives Tar Heel Fan a professional look and feel even if the writing probably isn’t.

Zeke tells me he is in the process of setting up a website to display his work.  In the meantime if you would like to contact him about seeing/purchasing photos or just to tell him you like the header he can be reached at via email here.

Thanks again Zeke and GO HEELS!

2007 UNC Football Preview

Wins are not important this season.

This has really been my perspective since Butch Davis was hired. Coaching transitions are exceptionally tough and when it comes because the previous coach was fired for not getting the job done it becomes even more of a difficult task. It has also been my observation that Davis is handling this team very much like someone targeting the big picture. Obviously Davis is going the make every effort to put the best team on the field to win each game this season but at the same time I also think he will be trying to build experience on top of get a grasp on what each player is capable of bringing to the table in the upcoming seasons. Building a program takes time and UNC has young players learning a new system and where the guys standing behind the offensive line are concerned a great deal of anxiety as to whether the running and passing game is going to be effective. So in terms of this season, I am convinced the progress will be measured in terms of what the younger players gain in experience and what the coaching staff sees as it relates to how to best use the personnel. Outside of building the team on the field there is an element of changing the football culture in Chapel Hill to accommodate a upper tier program. Regaining the support and confidence of the fan base on the most basic level is almost as important as what happens on the field. 2007 is about setting the table for future feasts which does not mean we cannot enjoy some steak this season should things go right.

Davis Suspends Backup Safety Cooter Arnold

Cooter Arnold, who last season moved from running back to safety in response to Trimane Goddard’s injury, has been suspended by Butch Davis for unspecified reasons. The suspension is said to be indefinite and marks the second such open ended suspension of the Davis era. Barrington Edwards was handled the same way and has since been dismissed from the team.

Since there does not appear to be any legal issues it is one of three things: academics, violation of team rules or an attitude problem. ACC Now is reporting Butch Davis will address the media this evening presumably about this issue in particular.

But I Already Closed This Book

ACC Now decided we needed to compare Chuck Amato to The Coach That Shall Not Be Named once more before we can fully move on. I don’t know…I thought we pretty much dealt with this in December but as SFN pointed out it is nice to have these numbers available should you need them. At any rate, both fan bases are very glad their annual autumn nightmare is truly over.

A Subtle Reminder of What a Crapshoot It Really Is

Here’s hoping those 3-9 predictions for the Heels are wrong as well….in the right direction.

ACC Football Preview

This season in the ACC could very well be remembered as the Year of the QB….and I don’t mean that in a positive way. The biggest storyline that does not involve the media telling us how much the Virginia Tech football team is going to somehow bring healing to Blacksburg is the fact there is one bankable quarterback among 12 teams. Boston College boasts senior Matt Ryan who is now playing under the tutelage Steve Logan and beyond that the rest of the teams have questions, QB competitions in training camp and a whole lot of uncertainty about how much production the man behind center is going to provide. This accounts for the degradation of the ACC as a national power much the same way having a stable full of questionable point guards can weaken you in basketball.  At any rate there will be a lot of attention on how well defense play and running games across the league.  Here is how I see it unfolding:

Catching Up on Football

Based on my quick perusal of the practice notes and press conference quotes here is my take on the major issues facing UNC heading into actual game prep for James Madison on Saturday.

  • The offensive line has taken a hit with the loss of Ben Lemming and Wyatt Hicks to injury which really thins out the second unit.  The offense in general is dependent upon how well the line plays in front of the QB in terms of protection and the ability of that same line to open holes up for the running game. A loss of depth in the offensive line could create issues down the road and it also inhibits Butch Davis’ ability to work the second string in more to afford these guys some experience.
  • Richie Rich will start at tailback for UNC.  Rich beat out Johnny White and Anthony Elzy for the slot.  Elzy was hampered by injury early on which could have cost him the position.  For as much attention that is given to the QB, what happens at running back will have huge bearing on how well the offense works.  The running game goes a long way towards setting up the passing game and if both aspects of the offense are working well it stretches the defense out.  The fact UNC is going into the season with an expected ceiling on the production at QB as well as rampant inexperience in the backfield means the offense is going to need take care of the football and hopefully take full advantage of every opportunity.  Davis has said he would like to have an established starter in the backfield and not a running back my committee because it fits better with the flow of the game.  I would imagine Davis will be looking for one of these guys to breakout and perform on gameday in such a way as to establish himself as the feature back.
  • Speaking of the passing game, there seems to be a little dissatisfaction with how well the receivers were playing in the early part of training camp.  The primary concern was that it was a one man show with Hakeem Nicks.  Davis stated on Monday that Brooks Foster, Brandon Tate and Kenton Thornton have progressed enough to provide the Heels with multiple weapons within the passing attack.
  • Special teams is a particular focus in Chapel Hill.  The new rule pushing kickoffs back to the 30 from the 35 yard line put pressure on Connor Barth as well as the coverage team in general.  If Barth can boom kickoffs to limit returns from opposing teams then the rule change will not affect UNC on that side of the ball.  On the receiving end the buzz is all around Brandon Tate who is seen as someone who is capable of making big returns.  Assuming the extra five yards results in more returns Tate then becomes a key player especially if he can create good field position for UNC on kickoff returns.
  • Given the uncertainties on offense it will fall on the defense to do their part to keep the opposing offense off the field.
  • Inside Carolina has the most up to date depth chart here.
