Duke Is Bleeding

Talk about two ships passing each other, UNC is heading to the Final Four with a 36-2 mark and the prohibitive favorite for NPOY in Tyler Hansbrough leading the way while Duke is heading who knows where.

Hansbrough Consensus All-American

Tyler Hansbrough was a unanimous selection to the AP All-American team adding to an already impressive list of postseason accolades.  According to ACC Now, this selection makes Hansbrough a “consensus” All-American pick putting him is very rare air at UNC:

To earn “consensus” status, a player must win first-team honors from a majority of the following teams: the Associated Press, the USBWA, The Sporting News and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The
NABC will introduce its team on Saturday in San Antonio.

Hansbrough is the first consensus All America from UNC since Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins accomplished it in 1983 and 1984. Phil Ford (1977 and 1978) and George Glamack (1940 and 1941) also were two-time consensus All-Americas.

Well, since his number is being retired then Hansbrough was already in select company among UNC greats.  This particular honor serves as additional confirmation….like we needed it.

NCAA Tournament: Elite Eight Sunday

GO DAVIDSON!

I will likely miss all the games today due to other obligations(thank you to the NCAA for putting the Heels on the Thursday/Saturday rotation for the regional!)  We will see if Davidson can pull of the gigantic upset which seems less likely to me than George Mason knocking off UConn in 2006.  That being said, Davidson has shown they can play and anything can happen.  #1 Memphis will try to get over the proverbial hump against #2 Texas for the other spot.

Comments if you have them.

Hey Mike Freeman, Did You Hear What Rick Pitino Said?

Earlier this month we have several in the media spouting off that Tyler Hansbrough was overhyped by the media and hyperbole was the name of the game when describing him citing the likes of Dick Vitale and Bill Rafferty.  And while the media can be that way, it is very difficult to get around what Rick Pitino said last night.  To paraphrase him he basically said he had coached against Michael Jordan as well as other NBA greats and he can honestly say he has never seen a player who works as hard on every possession as Tyler Hansbrough.  Pitino said he did not have the same talent and what not but the effort could never be quesitoned and according to him not even comparable.

So Mike Freeman and others can whine about the things people in the media say about Hansbrough but when a coach with the level of success as Pitino says these kinds of things about Hansbrough you know it is not media hot air but fairly close to the truth.

#1 UNC vs #3 Louisville: Game Thread

For the record UNC has already knocked Louisville out of the NCAA Tournament today.  The Tar Heel women rallied to knock of the Cardinals in women’s Sweet Sixteen.  We can only hope that is a sign of things to come with the Tar Heels doing the same to the men’s team in the regional final.

Comments when I have them, feel free to do the same.

GO HEELS!

NCAA Tournament: Sweet Sixteen Friday

One of the major upsides to UNC playing and winning yesterday is I get to enjoy the games tonight without worrying about UNC playing later in the evening or brooding over the loss.

On the schedule this evening we have the other half of the North Carolina delegation to the NCAAs, #10 Davidson playing #3 Wisconsin in what is sure to be more defensive fortitude and possibly ugly basketball along the lines of what WSU tried to pull last night.  We will see if Stephen Curry has any magic left.

The game of the night might be #2 Texas vs #3 Stanford since there are clear matchup advantages for each team.  During the late session you the two #1 seeds playing:  Kansas should handle #12 Villanova with ease but a win by #5 Michigan State over Memphis would not shock me.

Open thread for your comments, have at it.
