ACC Weekly Awards: Sexton and Goddard Honored

From the ACC:

OFFENSIVE BACK—Cameron Sexton, North Carolina, QB, 6-1, 190, Jr., Laurinburg, N.C.
Junior quarterback Cameron Sexton came off the bench to lead the Tar Heels to a 28-24 victory at Miami. The Laurinburg, N.C., native was 11 of 19 for 242 yards and two touchdowns, including the game winner with 46 seconds. Sexton came in on Carolina’s third possession of the game and led the Tar Heels on a 58-yard scoring drive. In the second half, with Carolina trailing by 10, he hit Hakeem Nicks in stride for a 74-yard touchdown play. It was the longest pass completion of Sexton’s career. Finally, with time winding down and Carolina trailing by three, he led the Tar Heels on a 56-yard scoring drive, going 3 for 4, including a perfectly thrown pass in the corner of the end zone to Brooks Foster for the game-winning touchdown.

DEFENSIVE BACK—Trimane Goddard, UNC, S, 5-11, 195, Sr., Robersonville, N.C.
Senior safety Trimane Goddard posted a team-high eight tackles, intercepted two passes and broke up another in Carolina’s come-from-behind 28-24 victory at Miami. On the final play of the game, Goddard picked off a pass in the back of the end zone, knocking it out of the hands of the intended receiver and holding on for his second interception of the day as the game ended. Earlier, he returned an interception 35 yards. It was the second time in his career Goddard had two interceptions in a game at Miami (2005).

A week ago, Cam Sexton was 3rd on the depth chart.  This week he is honored with a weekly ACC award.  Not a bad turnaround.  It also should be noted that it is nice seeing Tar Heels honored almost on a weekly basis in the conference football awards.

Final Thoughts on UNC-UM

  • Kudos to the coaching staff for keeping the team in the game mentally and also to John Shoop for some excellent play calling. Granted Cam Sexton has to still make the throws under pressure but that final drive had plenty of plays where all Sexton had to do was make a short pass to one of the big three receivers and allow them to churn yardage with their speed.  Mike White at Tar Heel Mania said short passes were the bread and butter last season.  Shoop used them again and also managed to get the big pass play as well.
  • Penalties are still an issue.  Once again UNC successfully raised an opponent’s drive from the dead with a stupid penalty.  In this case it was running into the kicker which gave Miami the ball back and the Hurricanes got a field goal out of it to go up 17-7.  Had UNC ended up settling for a FG at the end and then lost in OT, that one play would have been the difference between a win and a loss.
  • I talked about the defense at length in the first game analysis but I think you might see another word associated with them: underrated.  Is it me or does the defense not get discussed enough?
  • In winning this game part of me is even more upset at the loss to Virginia Tech.  Had UNC won last week they would be 4-0 and in full command of the Coastal Division at 2-0.
  • How much do you think the hatred for Butch Davis found among Miami fans increased on Saturtday? Ten fold? One hundred fold?

HEELS RALLY TO BEAT MIAMI

UPDATE: Heather Dinich at ESPN ACC Blog wrote this early on in the game:

No surprise in Miami

September 27, 2008 12:54 PM

Posted by ESPN.com’s Heather Dinich

As expected, the Hurricanes are taking care of business against North Carolina and lead 14-0 after one quarter. Last I looked, UNC only had 61 yards of total offense. Butch Davis was right: It didn’t matter who started today — neither one of his backups look like T.J. Yates. Of course, you’ve got to give credit to a much improved Miami defense.

How that work out for you Heather?  Please note when she wrote this, I think Cam Sexton had just entered the game.  It is almost like she does not even watch the game and as it stands right now, more than an hour after the end of the game, Dinich has not mentioned the UNC win.  More stellar coverage from the “ACC” blog.

HOW ABOUT THEM HEELS!!!!!!!

Wow…what a huge clutch performance from Cam Sexton.  And the defense really buckled down to hold Miami to 10 points after going down 14-0 in the 1st quarter.

I will have more later tonight…until then enjoy the huge win!
