Allow me to introduce UNC’s #1 ranked 2009 recruiting class.
This recruiting class is now the ultimate power in the universe.
In the N&O writeup Dave Telep of Scout.com had this to say about recently signed Justin Watts.
Apparently Alex Stepheson’s scholarship was burning a hole in Roy’s pocket so he offered it to Durham Jordan senior guard Justin Watts and he signed his LOI the today. Watts is not ranked in Scout.com’s top 100, is considered a three star recruit and had two offers from Rice and Stanford. In both those cases, a new coaching staff was making the offer. Feel free to interpret that however you wish.
Now the more panicky among us(read: message board folks) will point to Roy signing a three star guard with questionable ball handling and a perimeter shot as a sign the UNC staff knows for certain they are losing Lawson or Ellington or both. I am not seeing that…yet anyway. UNC had a scholarship to use with Stepheson transferring and they also need some more wing guards since the interior is stacked for years to come. It is also possible Roy sees something there and decided it was a good use of the scholarship.
Time will tell.
Three future Heels show their wares.
More hardware for Hansbrough, class of 2008 goodness and the Heels head for Charlotte to play on non-slippery floors.
Let me first say I tend to pay less attention to football recruiting than I do basketball because in many ways the rankings seem less exact. There are so many positions and the development of players tends to take longer to the point it could be a year or two before the returns are seen on a class. So my excitement over football recruiting news tends to be tempered by more of a wait and see attitude.
That being said, I did want to point out that Butch Davis signed his 2nd class since becoming head coach at UNC. It turned out to be a decent group according to Scout.com with 18 commits, 10 of them four star recruits which has UNC ranked 30th overall right behind NC State. UNC is ranked seventh among ACC schools behind Miami, FSU, Clemson, VT, BC and NCSU. On one level this is not as good as the haul from last season but still brings in some quality players to build the program with going forward. It also should be noted that UNC started the day ranked somewhere in the 50s and rose all the way up to 30th by the time all the commits were known.
Good work to Coach Davis and the staff for maintaining the influx of solid players.
So, what is the best way to cap off a weekend where you arguably played your best half of the season in routing one of your rivals by 31 points? How about by snagging the #1 PG in the class of 2009.
UNC got a commitment from junior Dexter Strickland, 6-3 PG from Elizabeth, NJ. Strickland is ranked #10 in Scout.com’s Hot 100 which gives UNC four players in the top 30 for the class of 2009. Add these four to the three coming in next season UNC will be loaded….again.
