Former Kansas players Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur were tossed out of the NBA rookie transition program. Why? For having pot and women in their hotel room which confused me because I thought that sort of thing was part of the transisting to the NBA. Both will get to make a $20,000 check out to the NBA and could be suspended to start the season.
Well at least it has in two past instances.
In 2000 and 2004 the ACC had only one first rounder in the NBA Draft. The very next season yielded a national title in the form of Duke in 2001 and UNC in 2005. We will see if it happens a third time. Looking at the ACC on paper, the league did retain a good portion of talent, the problems for the 11 teams outside of Chapel Hill four of those players were Carolina blue.
It is interesting to note that this is not only about underclassmen being drafted high but seniors as well. Obviously the ACC will lose a whole slew of graduating players but out of the senior class only three were good enough to be drafted and that was in the middle to very late 2nd round. What that basically says, it the talent pool, while losing some good college players, did not take much of a hit in the high caliber NBA talent department. Also, the decision of various underclassmen to stay bodes well for the league as they try to get more than four teams into the NCAA Tournament.

UPDATE[4:52 PM]: Official statement from UNC:
University of North Carolina men’s basketball players Wayne Ellington, Danny Green and Ty Lawson have decided to withdraw from the 2008 NBA Draft and return to Chapel Hill for the 2008-09 season, head coach Roy Williams announced on Monday.
The trio had entered their names into the NBA Draft pool in April but did not hire agents, leaving open the possibility of returning to school. The deadline to withdraw from the draft was 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday.
“After a long and exhaustive process of gathering information and sharing it with these youngsters, I stepped back and asked them to make their own decisions,” Williams said on Monday afternoon. “I’m very pleased with their decisions because I get to coach them for another year. I’m also pleased that they went through the process and gained valuable information. It was reassuring that the feedback they got from the NBA teams is the same type of feedback our coaching staff has been giving them.
“It was a lengthy process, but one that is fair for these youngsters. Everyone should have the right to be evaluated in terms of possibly reaching his dreams. I feel strongly that all of these young men will eventually be NBA players. The timing was just not exactly right at this point. They had my 100 percent support throughout the process, regardless of which decision they might have made.”
National. Title. Favorite. And it is not even close.

UPDATE: The N&O’s Caulton Tudor is reporting Green will make his decision on Monday since that is when he will meet with Roy. Apparently Lawson and Ellington will also announce on Monday as well.
North Carolina basketball player Danny Green said Sunday afternoon that he will wait until Monday before making a decision about his status in the June 26 NBA Draft.
Green, a rising senior and one of the Tar Heels’ most productive performers in ‘07-’08, originally intended to reach a decision today. But a meeting between the player and Carolina coach Roy Williams, which had been tentatively schedule for Sunday, is now off until Monday. “After that, I’ll decide,” Green said Sunday. “I still can’t say which way I’ll go.”
Williams was scheduled to take a flight from the Triangle to Omaha, Neb., Sunday. Carolina’s baseball team will face Louisiana State Sunday night at 7 o’clock (Eastern) in the College World Series.
Two other Carolina underclassmen, guards Wayne Ellington and Ty Lawson, are also expected to decide about their draft status on Monday. Players have until 5 p.m. Monday to withdraw and maintain their college eligibility.
So, Monday this long freakish fiasco will be over.

UPDATE: I really wish these people would make up their minds or at least present a unified front. Danny Green is now saying his father is basically wrong with his statement and that no decision has been made yet. Maybe he simply wants to meet with Roy to receive all the relevant information. Or maybe his father has opened his mouth in an ill advised fashion….again.
This according to the Fayetteville Observer quoting the ever loquacious Danny Green, Sr.
Ty Lawson worked out for the Portland Trailblazers and look pretty good in doing so as this video shows. Lawson also indicated he felt like he was “60-40″ in favor of staying in the draft.
So for those keeping score at home we have:
Danny Green: 50-50
Ty Lawson: 60-40
Wayne Ellington: ax2 + bx + c = 0,
Thankfully the 16th of June is almost here.
