This was during the LSU-SCAR game Saturday night where an SEC official inexplicably lays a shoulder into SCAR QB Stephen Garcia. And for anyone who thinks it was an accident watch as he shuffles his feet to size Garcia up then delivers the blow. It will be interesting to see how the SEC responds to this. I would think termination would be in order but given that college football officiating coordinators love spin general referee bufoonery on the field he probably gets off with just a one game suspension.

A couple of you have asked how close is UNC to being ranked in the football Top 25 for the first time since, be darned if I know when. Anyway. Here is the breakdown of UNC’s position in the two major polls.
In anticipation of the UNC-Rutgers game on September 11th the Rutgers blog Bleed Scarlet emailed me suggesting a Q&A which turns out to have been an outstanding idea. My answers to his questions appears here. Bleed Scarlet’s answers to my questions are after the jump.
Apparently Washington was robbed versus BYU.

- Andy Roddick’s girlfriend, Brooklyn Decker has great taste when it comes to hats.
- LSU has moved the kickoff with their game against Appalachain State to 10 AM CDT to get ahead of TS/Hurricane Gustav. Apparently the decision was made by former Duke and current LSU AD Joe Alleva. Just to be clear: Handling false rape allegations against lacrosse players? Sucks. Handling incoming natural disasters? Gold star. The upside for App fans is they now have a built in excuse for when reality strikes and they find playing LSU is 2-3 worlds away from playing Michigan.
- UNC has decided to allow Antonio Pettigrew hang around as an assistant track coach despite his admission he used performance enhancing drugs during his racing days. Given the fact former Tar Heel Marion Jones was wrapped up in this business(though not while at UNC) I think the smarter decision would be to let Pettigrew go instead of invite the scrutiny. However, UNC is going the route of the 2nd chance here. I just hope it does not come back to bite them.
- Bob Gibbons has ranked UNC’s 2009 class #1 with Roy still trying to secure a commit from Ryan Kelly ranked #12 in the ESPNU 100. And we thought the 2006 class was something.
What is with QB’s and the complete inability to let go?

UPDATE: So the App State blog linked below responded to my reasons saying it “They all boil down to - “App State might win.” Wow, I wish I had thought of that I could have saved myself the time I spent actually typing the ones I did.
I am not sure how you get that from reason #3, maybe they care to explain.
Reason #2 has a hint of that but in terms of this present season and how scheduling is done, there is no way UNC or any other BCS school would schedule a team like App State, with all of the local pressures, for their fourth non-conference game when there are three tough non-conference games on the schedule already. It just doesn’t happen and that is more about the rest of the schedule than it is App State.
Reason #1 is the only one that hints strongly at the “App State might win” logic but that feeds into the larger fact that UNC gains nothing from playing them. UNC does not get extra points for beating the three time defending I-AA champs and stands to lose a great deal should they lose. App State on the other hand benefits either way so when it came down to it, as it pertains to 2008, scheduling App State was not going to happen. As I said in the original post, App State beating Michigan made them radiocative to a majority of I-A teams the same way Davison is in basketball along with other mid-majors. The difference here is even greater than Davidson because there is an actual division between the level UNC plays at and the one App State has ruled for three years. Losing to a I-AA school is nothing short of humiliating regardless of how good that team is which is odd because in many ways App State gets respected and disrespected all at the same time.
Also, tarryheel at 850 pointed out that UNC’s final slot was for the first week of the season and App State already had LSU on the schedule so count the lack of a mutually open date as another reason why it did not happen.
Original post after the jump.
In case you have not heard, West Virginia promoted assistant coach Bill Stewart to head coach following his team’s drubbing Oklahoma like a rented mule in the Fiesta Bowl. ACC Now put the best spin on the move:
West Virginia scores one for the Big East, and Bill Stewart.
Oh, and West “By Gawd” Virginia, please hold for UNC on Line 1:
UNC: Yeah, about that promoting the popular assistant who wins big in the bowl game?
WVU: Yeah?
UNC: It doesn’t end well.
WVU: What?
UNC: Just call us back in 10 years.
I would point out that it does not have to be a 10 year proposition as long as your AD does not get in his head that he has to hire an alum and trolls the water to find a career NFL assistant who has never run a major college program or in the case of basketball a former player with only one year of head coaching experience under his belt. It is a fairly safe bet that the half life for Bill Stewart is tied directly to the number of years of eligibility left for Rich Rodriguez’s recruits. In fact it might be tied to how much time Pat White has left that is unless Stewart is some kind of recruiting genius and we just don’t know it.
Many thanks to the BCS and the Rose Bowl for sticking us with seven plus hours of blowout football created from having two vastly superior teams play teams that had no business being on the same field with them. And yes, I know Hawaii is 12-0, something that is easier to pull off when only two of your opponents actually have winning records. Hawaii is not Boise State of last season and Illinois is nowhere near the same class as USC but in the name of whatever this is what we got from 5 PM EST until midnight.
So many thanks for the boring football which was exasperated by the fact the announcers on Fox are horrible when it comes to doing college football, most likely because Fox does not cover college football except for the BCS.
