Our Long National Nightmare Is Over[UPDATED]

UPDATE: The Charlotte Observer is reporting that Packer is done broadcasting college basketball.  Packer released a statement in conjunction with CBS’ confirmation of their decision not to bring him back saying “In the history of nationally televised basketball, I’ve done probably 90 percent of the great games, so I don’t want to be going to do games of a different status, so I have no interest in that…”

Hard to argue the point.  If he is slated to do only ACC games how many great games can he expect?  Duke-UNC once a year?  The ACC Tournament?  I would imagine it is difficult to go about the regular season schedule knowing you are done after the conference season concludes.

So farewell Billy.  I would say it has been fun or something like that but it really hasn’t.

According to the Miami Herald, CBS is set to announce that Billy Packer aka [UNNAMED ANALYST] here at THF has called his last college basketball game on CBS. Somewhere I have to think Tyler Hansbrough is laughing.

Dick Vitale Drops All Pretenses

Via Mr Irrelevant is this photo of the extended Vitale family in attendance at the Duke-Maryland game last night.

vitalefamily.jpg

Now, on one hand, Vitale probably did not tell his sons to come to the game with his grandchildren decked out in Duke gear. Perhaps his sons are Duke fans and this is no different than any other family. On the other hand, it makes Vitale look like even more of a Duke homer than he already does(if that is possible.)

Update: According to commenter C.Michael his family dons the home colors if they are with him.  So perhaps he is being less Duke homerish(is that a word?) than we might all think.  And I would argue for journalistic integrity but please, we all know Vitale is no journalist in the same way Kirk Herbstreit is not one either.

Now, Mike Patrick on the other hand….

And ESPN Wonders Why People Call Them DSPN

Since UNC-Duke is less than a week away, you might be looking for something to get yourself fired up for the game.  Maybe you want to rewatch The Foul a dozen times or stare at a picture of Greg Paulus.  And if that does not do the trick then tune in to ESPN NFL Countdown at 11 AM on Super Bowl Sunday and see Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski discussing…well…football I guess.  From RAWFS:

This Sunday, at 11am, none other than Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski will be on the panel of the ESPN Super Bowl pregame show, no doubt in his “Builder of Character and Maker of Men” ™ role.  I doubt he’s been invited to share his views on the zone blitz, or the 3-3-5 Nickel defense that one team or the other might call in a critical third down situation.  In other words, Krzyzewski will be shilling himself, which in turn is really just another sideways recruiting appearance.  It’s not against the rules, but it certainly is distasteful if you think about it.

I agree.   I think it is safe to make two assumptions here: (1) Krzyzewski does not know jack about football and (2) he probably will not be staying in a Holiday Inn the night before. There is nothing he brings to the table that is going to enlighten the casual fan on the intricacies of football.  No, Krzyzewski will be on there yapping about leadership or being a champion or some other such nonsense which means he will be doing an extended commercial for himself.  Granted it is not illegal according to the NCAA but it sure the heck is annoying.

Only four days until College Basketball Armageddon 2008, Part 1…

Stephen A. Smith Wants to Silence the Bloggers

According to a recent Stephen A. Smith interview, bloggers such as myself are grossly irresponsible with what we produce on our blogs and should all be shut down before we drive Western civilization to hell in a hand basket. Or something to that effect. From Farther Off the Wall:

And when you look at the internet business, what’s dangerous about it is that people who are clearly unqualified get to disseminate their piece to the masses. I respect the journalism industry, and the fact of the matter is …someone with no training should not be allowed to have any kind of format whatsoever to disseminate to the masses to the level which they can. They are not trained. Not experts. More important are the level of ethics and integrity that comes along with the quote-unqoute profession hasn’t been firmly established and entrenched in the minds of those who’ve been given that license.

Therefore, there’s a total disregard, a level of wrecklessness that ends up being a domino effect. And the people who suffer are the common viewers out there and, more importantly, those in the industry who haven’t been fortunate to get a radio or television deal and only rely on the written word. And now they’ve been sabotaged. Not because of me. Or like me. But because of the industry or the world has allowed the average joe to resemble a professional without any credentials whatsoever.

Wow. Glad to see Smith was able to find time to attend the employee seminar at ESPN called “Blogs and the Evil They Have Wrought.” It would appear he has gotten the company line down pat.

Gary Parrish All-Americans

Gary Parrish at CBS Sportsline continues his parade of basketball previews with his All-American picks for the upcoming season. Now, I give Parrish a lot of grief, mainly because I think his analysis(if you call it that) is fairly shallow and many of his assertions are Doylesque in nature. In his defense, he is a national correspondent for basketball so there is only so much he can absorb in terms of information.. The frustrating aspect I find in reading Parrish is his opinion held in higher regard because he is on CBS Sportsline yet it is so devoid of actual substance in many cases. So bearing that in mind this is what Parrish had to say about Tyler Hansbrough when he named him a 1st team All-American:

Gary Parrish and His Fabulous Preseason Position Rankings

No, I have not forgotten basketball but in accordance with the desire to give football it’s due I have been a little mum on the basketball, especially since there is not much to talk about anyhow. That all changed last week when CBS Sportsline’s Gary Parrish released his second round of position rankings for college basketball. UNC is well represented as you might expect for a team that is one of the favorites to win a national title.
