Heels Take 18 Hours To Beat Wake; Play UVa in Meaningless Game

UNC’s game versus Virginia is being played as I write this on Fox Sports South.

Thunderstorms played havoc with the ACC Tournament on Friday dropping several inches of rain in the Triangle area and forcing the Miami-UVa game to finish up at nearly 11 PM. After further delays UNC finally got on the field with Wake Forest running out to a 5-0 lead with Patrick Johnson protecting a perfect game into the sixth inning. That’s when the rain started again and at 1:55 AM on Saturday morning the game was suspended.

Under normal circumstances UNC would have been declared the winner since the game was past five innings but the ACC decided no tournament games would be shortened forcing the Heels and Wake Forest to pick up the game this afternoon.  The Heels finished off the Demon Deacons 9-0 to move to 1-1 in pool play. The Heels then had to wait for Wake Forest to play Miami and hope for the Canes to lose which would mean the winner of the UNC-UVa game advances to the ACC title game. Wake came up short losing 4-2 moving Miami to 2-1 in pool play. Regardless of who wins or loses the game between UNC and Virginia, the Cavaliers will face FSU for the ACC Championship on Sunday.

Granted the game is not totally meaningless for UNC since the Heels are still playing for national seed consideration in the NCAA Tournament. Since this game doesn’t matter for Virginia, the Cavs decided to save ace Daniel Hultzen in the championship game and sent Cody Winiarski out to face UNC instead. The Heels faced Winiarski in the opener of the regular season series with Virginia beating him 6-0. So while a win versus Virginia would look good in the RPI, the human element of the selection committee is going to understand what this game really means which probably isn’t much.

And yes, blowing that five run lead against Miami really hurts right now.

ACC tourney = waste of time

Obviously, baseball gets less interest. I am a big fan of Carolina and ACC baseball. Keep up the blogging. Great job.

  • Heel To The End

it seems like Fox is about 90% of a perfect baseball manager.
from his curious pitching choices to something i realized in this tourney…
i’ve watched about 15 games, in person or on tv, this season.
i dont recall a single time when a Heel TOOK a 3-1 pitch.
get on base, keep big innings alive. put the pressure on the pitcher once in awhile.
early in the year, i thought this team had a chance to be really really good.
but after 55+ games, they still go through too many episodes of poor hitting and fielding to sustain a long run, it would seem.

I love baseball, but the ACC has killed the tournament.
